Chapter 385 Unreasonable Behavior

The Eighth Prince summoned the imperial physician again and asked him a lot about Consort Liang's condition. He then learned that Consort Liang's illness had indeed been going on for more than just a day or two.

This outcome made the Eighth Prince somewhat dissatisfied with his Eighth Princess Consort.

He had told her some time ago that he wanted her to take care of his mother, but when he asked, he found out that his wife had only known about his mother's illness for a day or two before he did.

This outcome made the Eighth Prince realize his wife's attitude towards his mother.

This made the Eighth Prince very uncomfortable. If his wife didn't like his mother, then did she also dislike him from the bottom of her heart?

Logically speaking, someone of the Eighth Prince's status shouldn't have felt inferior, but having been neglected by Emperor Kangxi for a long time and "enslaved" by the First Prince, he was inherently somewhat insecure.

Therefore, he cared more about and was more concerned about the attitude of the Eighth Prince's wife.

The Eighth Prince understood his wife's temperament, so he didn't say anything after returning home, but he did harbor resentment.

Before the Eighth Prince returned, his wife already knew that he had met Consort Liang in the palace, which made her very uneasy. In the end, she knew that her actions would not please the Eighth Prince.

As soon as the Eighth Prince returned, his wife came over. Her initial anxiety vanished the moment she saw Suqin following behind him.

She questioned, "Isn't this the palace maid who serves Mother? How did she come with Master?"

The Eighth Prince's wife had some vague guesses in her mind.

The Eighth Prince's subsequent words confirmed her suspicions.

"Your mother was worried about me, so she sent someone over to take care of me. Don't overthink it."

This made the Eighth Prince's wife think a lot.

The Eighth Prince's wife's face immediately darkened.

The Eighth Prince's face darkened upon seeing this. He hadn't even gotten angry at her for not caring about his mother yet, but she was giving him the cold shoulder just because of a palace maid.

He was also a man with a temper, and he was already angry, so now he was even less willing to coax the Eighth Prince's wife.

The Eighth Prince's wife found his behavior—clearly a prelude to taking him as a concubine—utterly intolerable.

"What do you mean I shouldn't overthink it? Is the manor so poor that it can't afford servants, or are the people in the manor not serving you well enough that Mother has to specially send someone to serve you?"

The Eighth Prince frowned: "How dare you speak like that?"

At this moment, Suqin suddenly said with a wronged tone, "Madam, the mistress only sent this servant to serve the Eighth Prince because she heard that he had no maids around him. She had no other intentions."

The Eighth Prince's wife was furious upon hearing this.

The Eighth Prince's wife looked at him and said, "In the past, when I dismissed the maids around you, you said it was up to me and that I was happy with it. The eunuchs around you served you well, and you didn't need any maids. Why can't it be done now? If you think that not having maids to serve you is not enough, you can tell me. Do you think I would wrong you? Why do you insist that your mother bestow a maid upon you? People who don't know better would think I'm being too harsh on you."

As they talked, the Eighth Prince's wife began to feel aggrieved.

They used to shower each other with sweet words when they first got married, but now they're saying something completely different.

The Eighth Prince was annoyed by her nagging: "Don't be unreasonable."

The Eighth Prince's wife was very disappointed. She was being unreasonable. Wasn't it him who had ignored his previous words? If he couldn't keep them, why did he give her such unrealistic vows in the first place?

The Eighth Prince's wife suddenly laughed sarcastically: "Heh heh, I'm being unreasonable." After saying that, she left with her people.

The Eighth Prince was quite troubled; his wife's reaction was beyond his expectations.

At this moment, Suqin timidly spoke up, "Master, it's all my fault. Otherwise, I'd better go back to Master Liang's side!"

The Eighth Prince shook his head. "They've all come; how can we go back now?"

"No need. Someone will take you to a new place. Since you are someone who serves your mother, just stay here properly."

The Eighth Prince agreed to Consort Liang's request, but he had no intention of sleeping with Suqin right now.

Suqin's appearance was only that of a girl from a modest family, while the Eighth Prince's aesthetic preferred a woman as bright and fiery as the Eighth Prince's wife. Otherwise, no matter how much he needed the power behind the Eighth Prince's wife, he wouldn't have given her so much face, with only her in his harem.

Suqin: "Yes, Master."

Suqin clearly understood her identity and situation; the only person she could rely on now was the Eighth Prince.

The Eighth Prince arranged for Suqin to stay in the front courtyard, in a small room that was well-equipped with various items, making her one of the more respectable maids.

Suqin was quite satisfied; it was much better than her residence in the palace.

After settling Suqin in, the Eighth Prince ignored her and went about his own business, while the Eighth Princess was still sulking.

The Eighth Prince's wife's nanny advised, "Prince, I've inquired and found out that the master arranged for that palace maid to stay in the front courtyard. He didn't let her into the study, nor did he let her serve him closely. It's likely that he accepted her because he couldn't refuse Consort Liang's offer. With Suqin's looks, it's not worth it for you to get angry with the master for her sake. If you continue like this, you'll only give that palace maid an opportunity to take advantage of you."

So stop the cold war. If the two of you are being cold to each other, it won't be good for the people serving you either. Why bother?

The Eighth Prince's wife was simply furious.

"Granny, stop talking. If he wanted to, wouldn't he be able to get rid of a palace maid?"

It's nothing more than having designs on it.

Suqin was also a restless person. She lived in the front yard. Although she couldn't enter the study, she could still do quite a lot.

There was a small kitchen in the front yard. She was quite skilled at cooking, and although the Eighth Prince never saw Suqin, he ate quite a lot of her cooking.

It wasn't that Suqin's cooking skills were better than the chefs in the imperial kitchen; rather, Suqin learned about the Eighth Prince's tastes from Consort Liang and specially learned them.

Suqin knew that the Eighth Prince's wife disliked her, so she silently acted as a fairy godmother, doing her work without saying a word. The Eighth Prince only felt that the food he ate was more to his liking and was unaware of Suqin's role in it.
