Chapter 637 The Passing of Time 2
Ning Yan looked out the window and saw a middle-aged man, around forty years old, walking in carrying a lot of things.
"Your father is back. Mother is going out to see him."
"Oh dear, these are turbulent times. I've been on tenterhooks the whole time your father was out."
Ning Yan was also somewhat helpless. She had been there for half a day, but because she had no memory, she knew very little.
But I guess the time period we're in now is before the founding of the People's Republic of China.
Otherwise, Zhou Xiuhua wouldn't have said that the world is not peaceful.
Just as I was thinking this, I heard the conversation between the two people outside.
"Where's the pork? Didn't you buy any?"
"Don't even mention it. You have no idea how despicable those Japanese are. Last night, they stole a pig that Old Zhang's family had just slaughtered. Old Zhang even got shot in the leg, but luckily it didn't break any bones. This morning, he had his son slaughter the pig again, but it wasn't ready when I went over."
Anyway, we're not in a rush to use it. He said his son would bring it over himself this afternoon once it's ready.
"Sigh, they even stole a pig and now they're going to get shot. When will this awful world ever end?"
Ning Yan thought to herself, "Good heavens, I've transmigrated to the War of Resistance against Japan."
Zhou Xiuhua carried firewood to boil water.
Ning Yan took out a healing pill from her divine palace and swallowed it in one gulp. The discomfort quickly disappeared.
She quietly untied the bandage from her head and took a look. The gruesome, ever-turned wound was now just a shallow scar.
After retying the cloth strips, Ning Yan went to the kitchen to help.
"father."
"Hey, my daughter's awake! Does your head still hurt?"
Ning Yan shook her head, "It doesn't hurt anymore."
Zhou Xiuhua said angrily, "Your daughter doesn't remember anything. The doctor said she has a blood clot in her brain, and she might not be able to remember anything until the blood clot clears up." There's also the possibility that she'll never remember anything again.
Ning Xiasheng's expression visibly soured. He was a cold-hearted person; if others were ruthless to him, he would be ruthless to others as well, even his own parents.
His daughter was someone he and his wife had doted on since she was little. After suffering such a great loss yesterday, he immediately grabbed a kitchen knife and went to the old courtyard to hack away. In the end, he only stopped after squeezing ten silver dollars out of the old lady's hand.
Today, when his wife told him that their daughter had lost her memory, he was furious!
He didn't even kill the chicken. He went inside, found a cloth rope, tied the chicken to a tree in the yard, grabbed a kitchen knife, and ran away.
Ning Yan asked in surprise, "Mother, where did Father go?"
Zhou Xiuhua reassured her daughter as if it were nothing out of the ordinary: "Don't worry, he's just going to the old house to settle accounts with your grandma."
Ning Yan: Wow, this dad seems pretty good.
No wonder her mother tried to swing a kitchen knife as soon as she heard she had amnesia. Goodness, she learned that from her father.
"Will my dad be alright?"
Zhou Xiuhua: "What's wrong? Oh, if we cut the price too much, maybe we can extort some more money. I really don't know if we should continue running this business. We can't even save a penny after a month of hard work."
It's better to extort money from the old house once.
The doctor's visit and medicine for my daughter's injury cost only four and a half silver dollars, and I still had ten silver dollars left over.
Ning Yan: Great! These parents are just what I want. I'm going to make sure they live a good life.
Soon, the water in the pot boiled, and Ning Yan found another knife to prepare to kill the chicken.
"Oh dear, hurry up and give it to Mom, you don't know how to kill a chicken."
Zhou Xiuhua snatched the cleaver and chicken, refusing to let her daughter kill the chicken no matter what.
Ning Yan obediently went to the kitchen to get a bowl, and was responsible for catching the chicken blood when her mother raised the knife.
This stuff is good, especially for someone like her who has lost a lot of blood before; it's perfect for her.
Ning Yan quickly scalded the chicken with water and urged, "Mom, you go and cook. I'm hungry. I'll take care of cleaning the chicken."
The chicken was alive, but Zhou Xiuhua didn't let her daughter touch it because she was afraid her daughter would be scratched by the chicken. It wouldn't matter if the chicken died, but she was mainly worried that her daughter would go hungry.
"Okay, you come here, Mom will go cook."
Ning Yan waited for her mother to enter the kitchen, then took a knife and made a cut in the chicken's belly.
First, she removed the chicken gizzard, then went to collect the eggs, followed by a surprised exclamation, "Mom, look what this is!"
"What's wrong? What's wrong?" Zhou Xiuhua threw down the fire poker and rushed out.
Then he immediately noticed what Ning Yan was holding.
"Yellow eggs?"
Ning Yan: ...It is indeed yellow, but it's not an egg, you know.
"Mom, no, it's not an egg. Feel it, it's really not an egg."
Zhou Xiuhua took the still bloody "yellow egg" and was immediately surprised by its weight: "My goodness, why is this egg so heavy?"
She spends her days setting up a stall outside, and she's not some ignorant rural woman; she knows that gold is heavier than other metals.
I've also heard the saying "a hen that lays golden eggs," so as soon as I got my hands on the "egg," I wondered if it was a golden egg.
He then dismissed the idea, saying that the hen that lays golden eggs doesn't mean that hens actually lay golden eggs.
But what exactly is this thing in my hand?
"Don't shout, let's be quiet. When your dad comes back, have him take this to ask him."
If this thing were really gold, one of these could probably be worth a hundred dollars. Good heavens, isn't this the story about buying and hiding everything?
Because of this "yellow egg," Zhou Xiuhua was distracted for the rest of the time. Ning Yan happily cleaned the chicken, then cooked rice and stewed the chicken. Ning Xiasheng only returned when the chicken in the pot was about to be taken out of the pot.
Yes, she was carrying quite a few things.
"Honey, come and take this, it's a bit heavy."
Zhou Xiuhua quickly went out to greet her, "What's up? Did you go to buy supplies?"
"There's no other way, the old lady can't come up with any money, so I can only offer her things as collateral."
The fact that they wouldn't even call her "mother" anymore shows how strained their relationship with the old house has become.
Zhou Xiuhua took the oil bottle, cabbage, kitchen knife, and a piece of cloth from her husband's hands. Ningxia Sheng was relieved to have only the grain left in his hands.
"I've been carrying this all the way, and I can't get rid of it because there are too many different kinds of things." His mother wouldn't even lend him a sack.
Ning Yan watched as the couple packed away the things they had looted from the old house, and thought to herself: Her father is truly a genius!
"Bringing back so many things has saved our family a lot of money."
Ningxia Sheng: "I was afraid that if I didn't give them enough, they wouldn't learn their lesson. If I could carry it, I could have carried the old woman's big grain vat back for her."
Thinking of his mother, who was crying so hard she was about to faint when he left, Ning Xiasheng felt a surge of relief.
When his wife was pregnant, his mother was biased. His sister-in-law, who was pregnant with his nephew, didn't even sweep the floor, but his wife had to do chores every day.
My wife was so exhausted that she went into premature labor. Fortunately, the baby was fine, but my wife can't have any more children.
If they can't have children, they can't have children. Anyway, they already have one child, so he doesn't blame his wife.
But the old woman was clearly in the wrong, yet she cursed her daughter-in-law every day, calling her a barren hen and dumping all the hard and heavy work on her. Her daughter-in-law suffered all the mistreatment and exhaustion and couldn't even get enough to eat. Why should she get away with it?
