Chapter 17: A Bystander in the World of Espionage during the Republic of China Era
To be honest, Chen Xin herself didn't know why, and could only shake her head and say, "I don't know why either, why I was dragged into this."
After a moment, Chen Xin seemed to remember something and continued, "If I had to give a reason, I would say that after the Japanese launched their war against our country, I sent supplies to the anti-Japanese armed forces, and it's possible that some of them were Communist troops."
“But I sent a lot. Station Chief Shi said that I also sent supplies to the National Army. In fact, I sent a lot of supplies and medicines during that period. I sent anything that was used to fight the Japanese.”
After Chen Xin finished speaking, she looked at the two of them and said, "If you really want to know what my relationship with the Communist Party is, these are the only things I can think of."
After Chen Xin finished speaking, one of them opened a piece of intelligence and looked at it. It said that the Chen Family Trading Company in Shanghai was suspected of being the source of Communist Party funds. After the traitor defected, he took the initiative to confess that he had received material assistance many times during the war with the Japanese. He secretly investigated and found that it was the Chen Family Trading Company that was responsible, which is why the Japanese arrested Chen Xin.
The questions that followed were less pointed. They asked Chen Xin why she was such a good shot, killing more than a dozen Japanese soldiers. Chen Xin explained that she had loved horseback riding and shooting ranges since she was a child, and that she had gradually developed her marksmanship. After the questioning, the two left, and Shi Feng came in and said, "The information still needs to be reviewed. There shouldn't be any problems. Just wait patiently."
Two days later, on the third day, Shi Feng informed Chen Xin that her information had been approved and her file had been created. Chen Xin's face flashed with excitement as she saluted Shi Feng: "This subordinate greets the station chief!"
Shi Feng smiled with narrowed eyes. He gave Chen Xin a simple oath-taking ceremony before leaving. He had already shown Chen Xin a lot of respect by staying for several days. Before leaving, he told Chen Xin that her current task was to make money, and then asked her if she wanted to stay a few more days or go out together.
Chen Xin said she was tired of going out together, so she changed her clothes and went with Shi Feng in a car. When they arrived at the Military Intelligence Bureau station in Shanghai, Chen Xin went to get her documents processed. Shi Feng prepared an office for her, introduced her to other people, and handed over the management of the Military Intelligence Bureau's own business to her before going off to do his own thing.
After exchanging pleasantries with the others for a while, Chen Xin returned to her office. Once there, she quickly picked up a newspaper, which contained invitations from both the organization and Jiang Yue to meet. Chen Xin then called the newspaper and posted a missing person notice, which was sent to the organization, explaining that she was currently unsafe and needed to postpone the meeting.
Chen Xin wasn't afraid of being found out. If anyone asked, she would say she was contacting an old man from the Chen Family Business. The next morning, which was also the sixth day after Jiang Yue sent the message requesting a meeting, Chen Xin called a car and took the Kuomintang agents straight to the former Chen Family Business. After looking around and seeing that it had been renovated with Japanese signs, she left. She then visited many other shops, all of which she had developed using a false identity.
After getting into the car, Chen Xin told the driver the next address, and the driver drove there. Chen Xin knew that the Kuomintang would definitely monitor her and record everything, but Chen Xin was not afraid. These people and shops were clean, and she was not afraid of being investigated. As for the fake identity, so be it. She was not afraid of being exposed now.
Today, Chen Xin visited about a dozen shops. Finally, she chose the place where she would meet Jiang Yue. She parked the car some distance away from the shop and observed for about ten minutes as usual. Then, she got out of the car and walked towards Safe House No. 3, which led to the scene at the beginning.
…………
Chen Xin told Jiang Yue about her experiences over the past few days, and Jiang Yue also shared her own experiences. After a moment of contemplation, Chen Yue said, "Going to Hangzhou was the right decision. Let's not stay in Shanghai anymore. Let's leave tomorrow and then find a way to go to Hong Kong."
Chen Xin didn't stay long; there were Kuomintang agents watching her. Chen Xin gave Jiang Yue a phone number and told her to call it after arriving in Hangzhou. Then she left.
Jiang Yue finally felt relieved. After Chen Xin left, Jiang Yue tidied up the room, cleaned up her traces, and went to the train station to buy a ticket.
Once Chen Xin returned to the Military Intelligence Bureau, the driver went to Shi Feng's office. Shi Feng put away the documents, indicating that it was time to talk. The driver then recounted in detail everything Chen Xin had done that day. After he finished speaking, Shi Feng closed his eyes and pondered. He couldn't see any problems yet, but there was no rush, so he let the driver leave.
Chen Xin in the office knew that someone would definitely report to Shi Feng, but she didn't care. She picked up the information on the Military Intelligence Bureau's Huitong Trading Company, looked at it, summarized the goods from the shops she had visited that day, wrote a document on how the trading company should develop in the future, checked it twice, and then went to Shi Feng's office.
Chen Xin knocked on the door, and Shi Feng's voice came from inside: "Come in."
Chen Xin opened the door and went in. Shi Feng stood up when he saw Chen Xin and said, "It's you. What brings you here? Is there something wrong?"
"No problem, station manager. This is a document I just compiled. It contains my plan for the development of the business. Let me show it to you."
Shi Feng poured Chen Xin a cup of tea and showed it to him. Shi Feng was shocked when he picked it up. It wasn't the content that was shocking, but the document itself that was detailed, well-structured, and clearly organized. Shi Feng had never seen a document like this before. In the past, he would just write things down on a single sheet of paper.
After reading it, Shi Feng asked Chen Xin, "Are all the reports from your Chen Family Business like this?"
Chen Xin nodded and said, "Since I took over Chen Family Business, I have required everyone to write reports like this. I believe that a good report is a reflection of your work performance and your attitude towards daily work."
"Actually, writing a good document is very simple. As long as you do your work carefully and meticulously, there is no difficulty in writing such a document. But if you are perfunctory and do not even understand your own work, you will naturally not be able to write a good document. This way, I can know who has done a good job and who has not done a good job."
While drinking tea, Chen Xin spoke to Shi Feng, who nodded, read the document, and said, "To produce such a document on the first day, your ability is truly remarkable."
"The main thing is that there is no difficulty. I have been in charge of Chen Family Trading Company for many years. It is just a set of things that can be copied directly."
"Can the profit here reach the figure you projected in your document?"
Chen Xin smiled slightly and said slowly to Shi Feng, "Station Master, based on my experience, it will be more or less accurate. However, let's wait until I go to the trading company tomorrow to take a closer look before making any decisions. The current estimates are based on the information you gave me, Station Master. But as long as the situation at the trading company is similar to what's on the documents, the annual profit should be about the same."
