Chapter 22 A Bystander in the World of Espionage during the Republic of China Era
After reading the letter, I put it away and looked at the other things in the small box. There was a thick letter with the title addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Chen, and another letter addressed to Aunt Fang.
The small box had two layers, with a ginseng root and three small yellow croakers at the bottom. Jiang Yue looked at the ginseng and saw that it was over two hundred years old. She wondered where Chen Xin had gotten it.
When the Chen family business was still around, they didn't have many ginseng roots that were over a hundred years old. Jiang Yue took a look and put them into her space. Little Yellow Fish Chen Xin also said in his letter that the person who delivered the message was quite reliable, so she wasn't tempted to keep them.
Jiang Yue put the small box away and placed it in her space. She then pulled the curtain at the back of the car so that no one could see inside. After buying the things and putting them in the car, she could transfer them directly into her space. Once everything was ready, Jiang Yue set off.
The first stop was fruit. She hadn't bought much in the past two months, afraid of attracting attention. Although no one might care how much you buy, Jiang Yue didn't do anything conspicuous for safety reasons.
I bought five boxes of fruit, which should be enough for the next twenty-odd days in the US. I also bought a few boxes of gas, but not too much fuel, mainly for the new motorcycle I bought in the storage space.
I also bought some salt and sugar, as these are useful everywhere. Finally, I bought some seeds, just in case I can grow crops in the future.
Looking at the modes of transportation, there are motorcycles and bicycles, and a boat is under construction, but they are all quite outdated and will be replaced later. There are no means of transportation in the air, and even if you could buy one, you couldn't take it with you.
Looking around, there wasn't much space left. The empty area was for storing the boat. We could build a tall iron frame, about three meters high, to hold more things. But even without the frame, it wouldn't really affect how much we could put things in.
After thinking about it, Jiang Yue decided to buy some canned food. The taste of canned food isn't very good these days. She had been avoiding canned food because she already had grains and takeout meals, but she decided to buy some today.
After replenishing the supplies, Jiang Yue drove home. When she got home, she gave the letter to Aunt Fang, returned the car, and went home.
Time passed slowly, and the ship was scheduled to set sail in a month. Today was another day off, and Jiang Yue planned to go to the shipyard to see if the ship was ready.
She took a taxi to the shipyard. Once there, Jiang Yue found the shipyard owner and asked him how her boat was coming along. The owner showed her that it was finished, but he didn't have time to deliver it to her in the next few days, so he left it there for now.
Jiang Yue went over to take a look. She had been told that it didn't need to be processed very meticulously, but now it was all processed and felt very smooth to the touch.
"Although you said 'good enough' is fine, we still made it to the standard factory quality for you, so that others won't see it and say that our factory's level is just so-so."
"Haha, not at all, I'm just in a hurry, so I won't ask for too much. Boss, can you find me a car? I can take it myself."
Jiang Yue gave an address, a riverside area with few people, where hardly anyone goes. The owner called a car for Jiang Yue, dropped the boat off, and left. Jiang Yue had been learning to drive a boat for the past few months, and after trying it out herself, she felt there weren't any major problems. Anyway, it was only for emergencies and not for frequent use.
When they were almost at the shore, Jiang Yue jumped off the boat. After looking around to make sure no one was there, she put the boat back into her spatial storage. She waited by the roadside for a long time, but no cars passed by. Since she had chosen a secluded spot anyway, she took out her motorcycle and set off.
Modern motorcycles are similar to bicycles, with an extra fuel tank on the crossbeam and an engine underneath. They are quite compact, and Jiang Yue rode off on one.
When she got close to a crowded section of the road, Jiang Yue found a corner and put the car into her spatial storage. After walking a short distance, she hailed a taxi and went home.
With only one month left, Aunt Fang had already prepared her luggage. She packed clothes for the whole family for all four seasons and made many pairs of shoes and insoles. A few days ago, Jiang Yue went out to buy a lot of cooking seasonings. In modern times, she sometimes saw news reports saying that they were hard to buy, but she didn't know if it was true. Anyway, Jiang Yue had prepared enough for the family to eat for more than ten years.
In the last month, I said goodbye to all the friends I had made here. In the last few days, I visited the old lady and aunt at the Chen family's original address. The shipping company also called to tell me to prepare my tickets and get ready to board the ship.
Jiang Yue went to the bank and withdrew some more US dollars to put in her spatial storage, just in case she needed them. Jiang Yue hadn't touched much of the money her father had in the bank over the years; she used some for a while but then replenished it.
The day before leaving Hong Kong, Jiang Yue wrote another letter to Chen Xin and sent it through three different channels, hoping that all three would be in trouble. The next morning, Jiang Yue's neighbor, who was also her boss, took them to the pier and told them to remember to visit them when they came back. They had developed feelings for each other over the past six months.
Following the flow of people, they boarded the ship. After showing their tickets to the staff for inspection, a staff member came over and led Jiang Yue and the other two to their room. This was Jiang Yue's first time on a ship in both her two lives.
As Jiang Yue walked around and looked around, she realized that this place was quite modern, except that the facilities and styles were relatively outdated. Otherwise, it was not much different from what she had seen in modern times, and it had everything she should have.
They went to the room and saw that it was big enough for three people to stay. There was a dressing table for makeup and a wardrobe for clothes. Jiang Yue and Aunt Fang opened their suitcases, tidied up their things, and then planned to go to the deck to take a look.
There were already many people on the deck. Jiang Yue and her two companions found a spot to look out over Hong Kong, stayed there for a while and enjoyed the breeze. It was a breeze with an unknown smell, and after a while they couldn't stand it anymore, so they went back to their room to catch up on sleep.
In the afternoon, I spent some time reading with my young apprentice before the ship set sail, and the group officially embarked on their journey to America to find Chen's father.
Chen Xin, who was in Shanghai, was in trouble. It wasn't a big problem, but it was quite annoying. Someone had taken a liking to her, or rather, her person and money were being targeted. Since Chen Xin joined the Military Intelligence Bureau, she had been in charge of the operation of the Bureau's own business. In just a few months, the profits had multiplied several times. In addition, she was good-looking, unmarried, and able to make money, so she was entangled by a rich second-generation military officer.
Chen Xin has been incredibly annoyed these past few days. This guy follows her everywhere, indulging in all sorts of vices like eating, drinking, gambling, and smoking. Several times, Chen Xin has considered shooting him. Today, Chen Xin went straight to Shi Feng's place, barging in without even knocking.
Just as Shi Feng was about to curse, he saw Chen Xin walk in impatiently. He swallowed back the words he was about to say. Before he could speak again, Chen Xin said, "Stationmaster, if you don't do anything about him and let him barge in, I'm going to apply for a transfer to another place. I'm not joking. If I see him when I come to work tomorrow, I'm leaving."
