Chapter 8: A Bystander in the World of Espionage during the Republic of China Era

After returning home, Aunt Fang asked Jiang Yue about the situation and then started cooking. The rest of the shop's affairs were basically settled. Jiang Yue adopted Boss Zhang's suggestion. Now, all that was needed was a doctor, preferably one with excellent medical skills.

When Aunt Fang served Jiang Yue the dishes, she heard Jiang Yue mutter to herself, "Where can I find a doctor?" Aunt Fang thought Jiang Yue was sick and asked anxiously, "Miss! Are you feeling unwell?"

Jiang Yue snapped out of her daze and, seeing Aunt Fang's anxious face, quickly explained, "Aunt Fang, don't worry, it's not that I'm sick. I run a pharmacy, and we're just short of a doctor. I've been wondering where to find one."

Aunt Fang was startled, patted her chest and let out a long breath: "I thought Miss was sick, but I do know someone about this. My neighbor's daughter-in-law's father came to Shanghai from Beiping. Her brother had an accident, and her father came from Beiping to Shanghai to find her. In the end, he stayed in Shanghai and has been teaching her son medicine these days. I heard from the neighbors that his medical skills are superb."

"Miss, you can have someone assess his medical skills, and if so, see if you can recruit him."

After hearing what Aunt Fang said, Jiang Yue felt like she had found a pillow when she was sleepy. After dinner, Jiang Yue took two gifts, one for Aunt Fang's family and one for her neighbor's child. The two of them hailed a rickshaw and set off.

When they arrived at Aunt Fang's house, Jiang Yue gave the gift to her daughter. The child seemed very reserved and didn't dare to speak much. Jiang Yue didn't press her for details. After staying at the house for a while, Aunt Fang took Jiang Yue to a neighbor's house.

When they arrived at the neighbor's house, they saw an old man with white hair and a youthful face lying leisurely in a recliner, with a child playing nearby. Aunt Fang led Jiang Yue over and introduced them to each other. The neighbor's daughter-in-law said, "I can't make that decision. You'll have to ask my father if he's willing."

Jiang Yue stood awkwardly to the side, wondering how to broach the subject. Should she just say, "I need a doctor, would you like to come?" or should she start by praising the other person's medical skills and chatting before making a move?

Aunt Fang, watching from the side, couldn't help but laugh. She really was a young girl. So Aunt Fang went straight for the lead: "Old lady, our young lady has opened a pharmacy. The shop has been bought, and the medicinal herb business has been finalized. All that's missing is a doctor to dine in. Would you be willing to come?"

Jiang Yue looked at Aunt Fang with bright eyes. She was truly a second parent, a relative! Then she looked at the old man, wondering if he would agree. The old man sat up and said, "I am Sun Yifan. I started learning medicine at the age of seven. At the age of 21, I traveled to various places to study under different masters. At the age of 24, I was admitted to the National Beijing Medical College for further studies. I have been practicing medicine for more than 30 years. You may ask me a question, but I have a few questions for you."

Jiang Yue nodded: "Go ahead and ask, I will answer truthfully."

When Jiang Yue heard the name of the National Beijing Medical College, she knew she had met a big shot. This school was the predecessor of Peking University School of Medicine. Just look at that resume, what else is there to think about?

"The first question is, why did you decide to open a clinic?"

"Because I want to learn traditional Chinese medicine, I've recently been reading some introductory books on TCM and enrolled in a TCM school. I'll be starting in two months. I'm thinking that after I graduate, I'll have a place where I can learn and practice, because theoretical knowledge alone is not enough."

"My second question is, do you plan to make money from this clinic?"

The moment this question was posed, anyone else would have turned away. Luckily, Jiang Yue wasn't expecting to make money anyway; she just wanted to break even, so she told the truth.

"No, my plan is to try to break even and not lose money. Originally, I planned to sell medicinal herbs directly, but the shop owner who sells them to me said it would be better to have a doctor with me."

After asking a few more questions, Jiang Yue answered truthfully. After Jiang Yue finished speaking, Mr. Sun suddenly smiled and said, "So how much do you plan to pay me?"

Knowing that the other party had already agreed, Jiang Yue quickly said, "I'll give you 20% of the profits, consider it as us being partners."

After the matter was settled, Aunt Fang, the adoptive parents, spoke up again: "Then do you think our young lady can study under you? She is very studious and reads for several hours every day."

After Aunt Fang finished speaking, Jiang Yue burst into tears. Aunt Fang truly deserved to be called her second mother! A raise! She absolutely had to get a raise! Then, Jiang Yue looked at Mr. Sun with starry eyes, but he didn't agree. Jiang Yue looked disappointed. Perhaps seeing her disappointed expression, Mr. Sun felt a little sorry for her and pondered for a moment before saying, "You still have two months before school starts, right? For these two months, you can study with me."

Hearing Mr. Sun finish speaking, Jiang Yue felt a sense of joy, as if she had found something she had lost. Mr. Sun then asked Jiang Yue some more questions, such as what books she was reading and a few more. After Jiang Yue answered, Mr. Sun's face remained expressionless. Jiang Yue didn't know if her answers were correct or good, after all, she had only been reading for a few days.

The two agreed that Jiang Yue would come to Mr. Sun's place to study every morning after breakfast, and study for a whole morning each day. After the pharmacy was renovated, Jiang Yue would go to the store to study. After saying this, Jiang Yue took Aunt Fang home. After returning home, Jiang Yue immediately increased Aunt Fang's monthly salary by 50%, which made Aunt Fang very happy.

For the next month, Jiang Yue lived a very regular life. She would get up early every day, eat breakfast, and then go to Mr. Sun to study. She would go home for a nap at noon and then study on her own in the afternoon. After a month, Jiang Yue finally entered the door of traditional Chinese medicine.

A month later, the pharmacy was renovated and named Jimin Pharmacy. After that, she went to the store every day to learn and watch Mr. Sun treat other patients. She wrote down any questions she didn't understand and asked Mr. Sun when there were fewer people around. Jiang Yue also hired a rickshaw to pick up and drop off Mr. Sun every day for a year. Her life for the past two months was exactly the same as when she was preparing for the postgraduate entrance examination in modern times.

With only a few days left before the start of the semester, Mr. Sun finally said he wanted to take her as his apprentice. Heaven knows how happy Jiang Yue was; tears immediately streamed down her face. In just two months, she realized how knowledgeable Mr. Sun was, and how he could treat all kinds of patients with ease. In just two months, the pharmacy became famous.

Jiang Yue originally thought that Mr. Sun was not famous in Shanghai, but who knew that in the second month, many people came to visit him one after another. Jiang Yue really hit the jackpot. If Mr. Sun hadn't been restless and wanted to make some moves, Jiang Yue would not have been able to get him to come.

When Jiang Yue got home today, she didn't realize that she was walking so fast she was practically flying. When Aunt Fang saw Jiang Yue come in, she said, "Mr. Sun has agreed to take you as his apprentice?"

Jiang Yue asked in surprise, "Aunt Fang, how did you know?"

"Hmph, I saw it!"
