Wu Ming remained silent.
The officer was unusually troubled: "Let alone pretending to be an ordinary person, even if someone infiltrated our base as an undercover agent, I'm afraid we wouldn't be able to recognize them."
His last words were full of meaning, and all the mercenaries shivered, straightened their backs abruptly, and shouted: "Sir, I, Blood Blade, am loyal to the organization and am definitely not a spy!"
"Sir, even if someone is an undercover agent, I, Lang Qing, would never be one! The organization is my life!"
"Sir, please investigate thoroughly. I have nothing to hide, and I'm not afraid!"
Everyone was righteously professing their loyalty, but Wu Ming stood quietly to the side, showing no reaction.
His eyes were calm and indifferent, and he did not react to his superior's words. Others glanced at him with apprehension and suspicion, but Wu Ming ignored them.
The officer smiled: "Of course, you are all loyal people, and I have no doubt about you."
Everyone breathed a sigh of relief.
The officer continued, "Wu Ming, you must do a good job. Our base is just a branch base. Once you achieve a few more great feats, I can recommend you to the main base. You really shouldn't be stuck in this small place."
Everyone was stunned for a moment, then their eyes flashed with intense jealousy and resentment as they glared at Wu Ming through gritted teeth.
Wu Ming ignored them completely, showing no interest in his superior's words. After seeing that his superior had given no further instructions, he turned around, picked up Tong Su, and walked away.
"Sir! Look at Wu Ming! He doesn't respect you at all!"
"If we're talking about who the undercover agent is, isn't this kind of person the most likely to be it?"
Behind them, disgruntled voices complained, but the officer snorted heavily and rebuked, "Alright, shut up. No matter who could, Wu Ming would never betray the base. Don't say such things again."
The mercenaries reluctantly agreed, though they were filled with resentment.
The Death Base is located outside of China, in the endless primeval forest of the south.
The damp and humid climate here is suitable for reptiles, and far more suitable for people like Wu Ming, whose supernatural ability is snake-like, than the north.
Transforming into a wild beast naturally means being influenced by its habits. If the base were built in the snow and ice, Wu Ming would probably spend most of the year in hibernation.
"When we were choosing a location for our base, the sparsely populated Ice Plains was a more suitable place. However, when we thought of Wuming, the North was completely abandoned. Now we're here, all for you."
These were the officer's exact words at the meeting; the latter half of which he spoke earnestly and directly to Wu Ming.
Needless to say, these words provoked widespread anger. Half the mercenaries in the base loathed Wu Ming and were constantly looking for trouble with him.
The other mercenaries had long harbored resentment and hatred towards him.
Tong Su nestled obediently in Wu Ming's arms, letting him carry her around, while her mind quickly reviewed all the information.
The officer's attitude was very problematic: he seemed to value Wu Ming, but in fact, he was making Wu Ming make enemies in every way.
Wu Ming seemed free within the base, able to move about and do as he pleased, but in reality, no one was more severely restricted than him.
Everyone in the base was keeping a close eye on Wu Ming. If he showed even the slightest abnormality, a report would be on the officer's desk the next second.
"That's really strange."
Tong Su narrowed her eyes.
The base of the dead is built in a cold and austere style.
The walls were pure white and smooth steel plates. There were cameras and monitors everywhere around the corners and doorways. Machinery and pipes were embedded in the walls, and yellow and black warning strips were visible everywhere.
