Chapter 5: Educated Youth Abandoning Their Wives and Children
Ji Huaizhi went to a public telephone and dialed the number for Chenjia Village.
"Chen Chunya! You have a phone call!"
Chen Chunya was working in the field when she guessed that the call might be from her husband, so she didn't forget to pick up her child as well.
Last time, he ran away in such a hurry that the child didn't even get a chance to say a word to his father.
"Hello!"
"Chun Ya, how's things at home?"
Hearing the man's voice, Chun Ya forgot about her son at her feet: "The house is still the same as always. Why are you making a phone call? How much does it cost?"
"I have something to tell you. I opened a tutoring center near the school and enrolled 21 students today. After deducting rent, desks, chairs, and other odds and ends, as well as the salaries of two teachers, I still have about a hundred yuan left."
“I think this can be done for a long time, and then we can bring you and your child up here.”
After hearing this, Chen Chunya felt that her husband was really amazing. He had so much money; the villagers couldn't earn that much in a year.
"Really? I don't understand these things either. If you think it's okay to do it, then keep doing it. I don't know as much as you do, so I'll support whatever you do."
“I heard from others that you have to pay to buy even a leaf of vegetable in the city. You can wait for me and the kids at home.”
Now the two of them write letters frequently, and Chun Ya no longer has any wild thoughts in her mind.
She felt that her husband was much better off after he left than when he was in the village.
He knows how to earn money for his family and also thinks about his wife and children.
"Just listen to me when the time comes. Xiaotian is old enough to go to school."
When it comes to Xiaotian's education, Chun Ya doesn't say much, as she's afraid of hindering her own child's development.
"You don't need to do any more work in the fields. Just buy whatever you need. Your man can earn money now."
"If I remember correctly, tomorrow should be Dad's birthday, right? Remember to go to the city and buy two pounds of meat and two bottles of wine to take with you. You can also buy some other things. Just tell them that I'll have a couple of drinks with Dad when I come back from my holiday."
Chun Ya nodded shyly, then realized he couldn't see her and agreed: "I understand. Don't skimp on things while you're away, and don't worry about home."
"Don't send money home anymore, keep it for yourself."
After exchanging only a few words, Chun Ya urged him to hang up, since phone calls were really expensive.
After hanging up the phone, he realized that his son was still silently standing at his feet. He even said he wanted to bring his son over so he could say a few words to his father.
And then I forgot again.
Chun Ya coaxed her son guiltily, "Son, I forgot just now, I didn't let you talk to your father."
"Next time, your dad will make sure you mention it when he calls next time."
Ji Xiaotian lifted his eyelids, completely unconcerned: "I won't talk to him, and you shouldn't pay any attention to him either."
Chun Ya assumed he was complaining that Huai Zhi hadn't come back for so long, since such a young child was easily bullied without his father by his side.
He picked up Xiaotian with a tender heart and said, "Baby, Dad is studying in another city and has to work hard to earn money in his spare time. He's saving up to bring us to the city."
"No! You're not allowed to go!"
Ji Xiaotian's exaggerated expression startled Chun Ya. Lately, she didn't know what was wrong with her son; he didn't like playing in the mud anymore.
"Mother, don't go. We'll stay in the village and not go anywhere else."
Chun Ya felt that something was wrong with the child's condition, and she would have to write it down in a letter and tell Huai Zhi about it later.
"Alright, alright! We'll wait for your father to come back in the village."
Ji Xiaotian hugged his mother's neck and shut his mouth. He had a terrible dream last night.
He and his mother finally found his father, but his father didn't want them at all and said a lot of hurtful things.
Finally, when he and his mother were returning to their hometown, they were taken away by human traffickers. They even beat his mother. It was terrifying. Those people separated him from his mother, and he could never find her again.
As long as we don't go into the city, it's fine.
"Chunya, it's your father's birthday tomorrow. Bring the children over for dinner." Chen's mother came over specifically to speak to her daughter.
Chen Chunya nodded: "I know, Mom. I'll come over early tomorrow to help you cook."
Chen's mother was also happy to hear this. Remembering that she had just answered the phone, she asked about her son-in-law's situation: "How is Huaizhi doing over there? Has he said when he'll be back?"
Chun Ya recalled that it seemed no specific time of return was mentioned:
"No, but he will come back for the Chinese New Year this year. He will be very busy during this time. He opened a tutoring class outside the school, thinking he can make some money. It seems to be doing quite well."
Chen's mother was also happy to hear this, as tutoring classes would definitely require tuition fees.
If the man can earn money, the woman won't have to work so hard.
"What else did he say on the phone this time? You've been married for so many years and only have one child. You can't always be separated, can you?"
"Did you say you'd bring you and your daughter over?"
The main concern of Chen's mother was that her son-in-law was becoming more and more outstanding, and what if he was bewitched by some vixen outside?
And what if some men, after being separated for a long time, start keeping another woman on the side?
Couples who are separated for a long time are more likely to experience relationship problems.
After hearing this, Chen Chunya recalled what Huaizhi had just said: "He did say that, but we'll talk about it later. If we move to the city, the pressure on his shoulders will be greater."
Chen's mother was disappointed in her daughter, who was just too sensible.
She is also very thoughtful.
“Men are supposed to support their families. Didn’t he send you two hundred yuan last time? That proves he has the ability to earn money.”
"You're so stupid. His only advantage used to be his good looks. People looked down on him because he was lazy. Now that he can make money and is good-looking, aren't you afraid that he'll be harassed by people?"
There are some concerns about this spring bud.
After all, I am now a rural woman.
He is now a promising college student.
Holding the child tighter, Ji Xiaotian pouted and said, "He's bad, I'm not going."
"Oh my, my dear grandson, that's your father, how can you say he's bad?" Mother Chen took her grandson and teased him.
"You have to go and keep an eye on your father, you know, so he doesn't make a mistake outside."
Ji Xiaotian turned his head away and refused to listen to his grandmother:
A man like that should keep Mother away from him, or he'll kill her.
At that moment, Ji Huaizhi sneezed.
The other people in the dormitory also found out about how much money he made from his tutoring classes, and Huang Dong was genuinely happy for him.
"You're amazing! You really made money!"
Lin Tao was also surprised. His eyes darted around, and he said ingratiatingly to Ji Huaizhi:
"I always told you, Huaizhi, you could definitely do it. Is your tutoring center hiring teachers? Do you think I'm a good fit?"
Huang Dong frowned in confusion: "That's not what you said before, is it?"
"Go ahead, Brother Ji, is that alright?"
Ji Huaizhi didn't make any definitive statements, after all, it's better to offend a gentleman than a petty person.
Everyone has their own little thoughts.
"With Wang Youfa already having two male teachers, we only need one female teacher now, so it's not a good coincidence."
Lin Tao felt somewhat regretful after hearing this.
The main reason is that he never thought that this tutoring class could actually make money, and that he could even get paid for teaching a few classes.
You'll have experience when you graduate and start working, so it's definitely not a loss.
