Chapter 5 The Laziest Man in the Countryside 70 (5)
Li Zhenzhu hid the candy wrapper and looked up to see the sickly-looking man staring at her.
The bulging mouth immediately stopped moving.
He probably wouldn't ask me for candy, would he?
Seeing how afraid she was of him asking her for candy, Ji Huaizhi found it amusing, and looked in another direction with a blade of grass in his mouth.
"Um, I'd like to ask why your village is called 'Burning House Village'?"
He Yingying was also curious: "Yes, this is the first time I've ever heard of a village name like this."
Ji the Elder said indifferently, unwilling to talk to them any longer: "It's always been this name."
Seeing that they could chat, he stood up and said, "You've rested enough, let's go. It's harvest time now, and everyone is busy."
Everyone was disheartened when they heard they had to travel again.
Only Li Zhenzhu's eyes showed fighting spirit; she was about to see her parents.
Ji Huaizhi also got off the oxcart and slowly walked behind, not far from Li Zhenzhu: "You're such a glutton, give me one."
Li Zhenzhu looked incredulous when she heard his words, as if she had never expected anyone to say such vulgar things, and felt that her ears were dirty.
I quickened my pace and ignored him.
She was surprised that he kept staring at her, which made her feel uneasy.
She took a deep breath, pulled a piece of candy from her pocket, and quietly handed it to him from behind: "Stay away from me."
Ji Huaizhi stopped teasing her, but then Ji the Elder turned around and looked at Ji Huaizhi with a puzzled expression.
Then he looked at Li Zhenzhu, who was wearing a dark blue jacket and black polyester pants. Her two braids made her look even prettier than his wife when she was young.
He wondered if Ji Huaizhi had taken a liking to this educated youth.
That's definitely not going to work. How could these pampered city girls possibly look down on them, these country bumpkins?
Even if they have their eye on someone, it's just a way to avoid work.
When they arrived at the educated youth settlement, Boss Ji told the educated youth the rules: "You all wait here for a while. The older educated youth will be off work soon."
"They are all your seniors. If you don't understand anything, ask them. If there's anything else, go find the village secretary, Ji Hong. Our village just needs to remember one thing: don't cause trouble."
"Take your things."
When Li Zhenzhu stepped forward to take something, Ji Huaizhi picked it up first and handed it to her.
Although the man was expressionless, Li Zhenzhu's heart still skipped a beat.
This person doesn't seem like a good person.
Ji Lao Er also glanced at Lao Si with a strange expression.
Has he lost his mind?
How could a quiet, reserved person help a female educated youth carry her luggage?
This is simply unbelievable!
He Yingying glanced at Ji Huaizhi, then her gaze fell on the things he had bought. Are these rural people so rich?
When Wang Xiuju returned and saw how much stuff they had brought back, she slapped her thigh and exclaimed, "Heavens! Aren't you afraid of being struck by lightning for buying so much stuff?"
"I only gave the fourth brother one dollar and fifty cents. I didn't expect him to buy so much. I haven't even had a chance to ask him yet."
Everyone in the family looked at Ji Huaizhi.
Especially the three sisters-in-law, they needed both candy and coupons; besides money, they also needed coupons.
"Little one, what's going on?" Wang Xiuju frowned.
"I'm asking you a question, are you mute again?" Father Ji's voice was very loud.
Startled, Ji's mother punched him.
Everyone was waiting for Ji Huaizhi to explain how he bought these things and where the money and tickets came from, but unexpectedly, Ji Huaizhi sat on the stool and fell straight down.
Just as his son was about to hit the threshold, Ji's father's eyelids twitched, and he first caught his son's head.
Just as he was about to roll over, his sons shielded him.
"Is he alright, Dad?!" Wang Xiuju was so scared she almost lost her mind.
"It's alright, eldest and second eldest, carry Huaizhi to the room." Father Ji was also frightened, his eyes filled with worry.
What should we do about my youngest son?
"Dad, don't worry, we'll ask our older brothers what the doctor said later," the third son comforted his son.
But everyone knew in their hearts that it probably wouldn't be of much use. When Ji Huaizhi was a child, he took him to see doctors and even consulted folk healers, but none of them could give a clear diagnosis and said that he was faking it.
Ji Huaizhi was placed on the bed, and the second son saw a bird on the box next to him.
Thinking he had misread it, he tried to grab it but his older brother pulled him out.
"Slow down."
"Boss, what did the doctors in the city say?" Wang Xiuju asked.
Ji Laoda shook his head: "He says he's not sick, he's just lazy, he's faking it."
The second son stood next to his wife, seeing that she wanted to eat chicken cake, and told her to hold off for now and get down to business.
There's no way around it, pregnant women naturally crave food, let alone at this stage of pregnancy.
"What kind of doctors are these? Our youngest son is in such a state and they still can't find the cause. If they were really faking it, your father and I wouldn't be so angry." Wang Xiuju's eyes were red.
"What are you doing! Stop crying and sobbing." Father Ji lit a cigarette with a piece of red charcoal.
"As you can see, our youngest son is sleeping longer and longer these days. He even falls asleep right after eating. I'm really afraid he won't wake up one day." This is Wang Xiuju's biggest worry.
"He hasn't even gotten married, and he doesn't have a child."
"Mom, don't think so much." Ji Laoda was the eldest son, so his words carried weight: "After this harvest, we'll hand over the grain to the state and then distribute the grain. We'll exchange the grain for money and take my brother to the provincial capital for a visit."
Then he looked at his second and third sons and said, "Do you have any objections? If so, I'll tell Dad to divide the family property, but you can only move out. After all, the fourth son isn't married yet, so we need to keep his share for him."
The second and third brothers shook their heads, saying, "This is a big deal: we have no objections."
Sister-in-law Ji thought that if her brother-in-law hadn't offered to take her to the hospital yesterday, the doctor would have said that if it had been any later, the baby would not have survived.
So she didn't say anything when her husband agreed.
Sister-in-law Ji remained silent. She had used all the money for her brother-in-law's medical treatment; though she was reluctant, she knew it was the right thing to do. No one was to blame; these days, life is the most important thing.
Seeing that none of her three daughters-in-law objected, Ji's mother felt much better.
To be fair, the Ji family has a good family tradition.
The most common thing people say is that the youngest son of the Ji family is a lazy bum.
“You’re all good kids. Let’s discuss this properly after we’re done with this busy period.” Ji Hong said, puffing on his pipe.
The child was already drooling as he looked at the food on the table.
Even if Ji's mother wanted to share with them, she hadn't figured out the origins of these things yet.
"Don't leave these things for now. Ask your brother about them when he wakes up." Mother Ji put them away.
Ji Tao and Ji Mei were relatively old, so they were fine once they swallowed their saliva.
But Ji Shitou was still young, and when he saw that his grandmother wouldn't give him any, he cried from longing.
Sister-in-law Ji gave him a half-eaten corn cob to chew on before she could appease him.
