"You'll find out later." Qiao Qiu turned and walked back.
"Oh." Yu Honghua followed, tilting her head to look at her and asking, "Now that you know we didn't do it, are you going to leave?"
"You really want me to leave?" Qiao Qiu stopped and looked at her.
“No, no, no, that’s not what I meant. You’re our village’s benefactor now, how could I want you to leave? I’d rather you stay. It’s just that I’m afraid you’ll want to leave on your own. I want you to stay, but I’m afraid I’ll delay your plans.” Yu Honghua’s voice was almost a whisper by the end.
Fortunately, Qiao Qiu had good hearing and heard every single word.
Qiao Qiu avoided the question and asked instead, "If I said I was willing to let your people work in my shops, would you be willing to accept the imperial court's offer of amnesty?"
"Accept amnesty?" This was the first time Yu Honghua had heard anyone say this to her. "Why should I accept amnesty? I haven't forgotten why I became an outlaw."
"You don't believe me?"
“This isn’t a matter of belief, it’s a matter of principle,” Yu Honghua said.
"Your principle is that you don't believe I can truly make their lives better." Qiao Qiu suddenly felt a pang of sadness. "If you want to kill them, I won't stop you. I just hope you won't regret it later."
Qiao Qiu continued walking forward, probably never expecting that she would be so angry with her lover one day.
Yu Honghua was taken aback, then rushed forward and grabbed Qiao Qiu, "What do you mean?"
"Don't you have any sense of self-preservation? Others have used the name of your Flying Red Mountain to do all sorts of bad things, and you're the ones who have to take the blame. The imperial court's final arrest warrant is either that you surrender or they will attack you."
“But we are innocent,” Yu Honghua retorted.
"Do you think the imperial court is as simple as you imagine? Is it really that clear about right and wrong? Let alone the imperial court, go down the mountain and ask how many people would think that your Feihong Village is innocent?" Qiao Qiu never expected that her lover in this life would be so simple-minded.
Qiao Qiu suddenly felt a pang of nostalgia for her lover from her previous lives; at least she could make clear-headed decisions about certain things back then.
Yu Honghua could no longer hold Qiao Qiu's hand. She squatted down, her face pale.
She understood perfectly well that if the imperial court sent troops, they would be no match for them.
"This is the only way out I can give you. Think it over carefully." Qiao Qiu didn't disturb her, but turned and walked towards the edge of the field. That place should be safe now, right?
"Why are you helping me?" Yu Honghua suddenly asked.
"To make myself feel relevant," Qiao Qiu replied casually.
Yu Honghua smiled gently, suddenly feeling that her wounded heart had been healed a lot.
Qiao Qiu had just reached the edge of the field when she suddenly felt a little dizzy. By the time she realized something was wrong, it was too late.
The second-in-command, leading a group of villagers, rubbed their hands together and said with a grin, "The boss's medicine is really effective; knocking someone out is a piece of cake. Men, carry him away; we're having a celebration in our village today!"
"Yay!"
The crowd cheered and carried the person away.
...
When Qiao Qiu woke up again, she found herself lying on a wedding bed.
The red quilt, the bright red wedding candles, the pile of peanuts, and the longans all proclaimed that she was now in her bridal chamber.
Her hands and feet were completely powerless again, and she could hardly move them.
What's going on?
Did she get reborn in a different time and space?
"Little Jie, how did I end up lying here?"
The ring said in a childish voice, "Master, congratulations! You're a groom now. The people from Feihong Village poisoned you during the day, tied you up, and forced you to marry their mountain chief, Yu Honghua. You were still unconscious during the wedding ceremony, but now you seem to be outside toasting people. Be careful, Yu Honghua is acting strangely."
"Okay, I understand." Qiao Qiu was feeling quite anxious just now, but after hearing that she was getting married to Yu Honghua, her heart settled back down.
"Master, you'd better watch out. I'm going to sleep." The ring sensed that what was about to happen was not something it should continue watching.
"Hmm," Qiao Qiu responded, then closed his eyes for a short rest. These people from Fei Hong Village were far too audacious, daring to openly attack him.
Given her status, they were probably after her for her earning potential. However, she's not interested in supporting anyone who's not hers, except for those she absolutely has to support.
These people can forget about getting something for nothing from her anymore.
Not long after, Yu Honghua, who was half-drunk, came in, and the door was closed again.
Qiao Qiu opened her eyes and found it somewhat amusing. Her body was, after all, that of a man, yet she had to stay in the bridal chamber like a woman. What was the difference between this and marrying into another family?
Yu Honghua walked to the bedside, sat down, and squinted at her face.
Qiao Qiu then realized the difference the ring described. During the day, Yu Honghua was charming and lovely, but at night, how could Yu Honghua be so domineering?
"I've wanted to take off your mask for a long time, but I haven't been able to for a whole day and night. Now that you're marrying me tonight, I can finally see you properly."
As Yu Honghua spoke, her hand reached over Qiao Qiu's mask, recalling how Qiao Qiu had removed the mask last night. She also reached her other hand behind Qiao Qiu's head.
Touching the mechanism, with a click, the two wires retracted into the mask, and Yu Honghua removed the mask.
Upon seeing Qiao Qiu's lineup, Yu Honghua held her breath.
A beautiful face, captivating eyes—beneath Meng Yuanqing's mask lies such an unparalleled face.
You are so beautiful.
