After all, no one's just sitting around doing nothing. The superhumans are responsible for security and scavenging resources from zombie-infested areas. Ordinary people are responsible for farming and factory production. Simply robbing isn't nearly enough.
Finally, and most importantly, are those who conduct scientific research.
Qiao Qiu conducted a thorough investigation, driving away some of the malicious individuals and keeping only those who truly contributed to humanity. She provided them with the best supplies and equipment.
The conditions were even better than what Qiao Qiu's father had given her back then.
Moreover, Qiao Qiu also recruits talented individuals, especially researchers, whom he pays particular attention to.
Society's progress is inseparable from scientific researchers. If zombies can disappear, Qiao Qiu believes that only these people can make a difference.
There's a saying that goes, "People should believe in science."
However, because zombies have existed for so many years, and twelve years have passed since then, people have less hope for researchers than for people with superpowers.
The situation of researchers in the other cities is much worse than that in the South City. Unlike the South City Lord, the three city lords do not always have expectations for scientific research. They have a nonchalant attitude towards scientific research, and their resources are relatively less abundant.
Qiao Qiu hired a few hackers to first learn about the researchers in those cities, and then sent out invitations specifically targeting "sex".
When the researchers saw Qiao Qiu's letter, they were first surprised, then excited, and finally said that as long as Qiao Qiu could take them away from the city, they would go to her city to conduct experiments.
Qiao Qiu understood their current predicament, but if she went to these cities to take these people away, it would definitely alarm the people in these cities.
This could shatter our years of stable life, and Nancheng might be forced to close down.
Just as Qiao Qiu was thinking about how to sneak into these cities, the head of the guards suddenly came to report that her son wanted to see her.
son?
When Qiao Qiu first heard this, she hadn't quite grasped it yet; her mind was completely focused on how to build the southern city.
After realizing what was happening, I felt a surge of energy.
Wasn't the one who was her 'son' that little zombie Su Xi?
Holy crap, it actually found its way here. Didn't we tell it not to come for three months?
Could it be that she misremembered the time? Isn't it two and a half months now?
"Let it in."
It's safer to keep this little guy around. Although he's a zombie with his own thoughts, he's still a zombie at heart.
Hmm, a zombie. Su Xi seems to have some special feelings for it. It doesn't seem like it would hurt her. If she could get it to help her, would she basically be able to roam freely in this apocalypse? She took it through zombie territory before, and it seems to have a very high status among the zombies.
Qiao Qiu felt she was being a bit obsessed. Zombies were practically natural enemies to humans, and she wanted to ask them for help.
If she were to say this publicly, her citizens would probably think she was either crazy or stupid.
"Mother!"
As soon as Su Xi entered, she pounced on Qiao Qiu like a happy little bird, leaving the head guard frozen in place.
"My back! Su Xi, get up!" Qiao Qiu was so frightened that she didn't have time to dodge and was knocked to the ground, suffering a severe injury to her waist.
"Sister, are you alright? I'm sorry, I didn't mean to." Su Xi quickly got up, helped her up, and instinctively reached out to rub her waist.
Qiao Qiu was startled by this sense of familiarity and froze.
Su Xi withdrew her hand, frowning as she looked at it. The touch felt strangely familiar.
After a moment, Qiao Qiu suppressed her shock and looked at the stunned head guard with a normal expression. "You can go out now."
"Yes." The head guard nodded, turned and walked out of the room.
This is Qiao Qiu's study, with books lining both the left and right walls. A large desk sits in front of a huge bookcase on the right, with a chair behind it. A floor-to-ceiling window opens in front. In the center is a U-shaped sofa with a transparent coffee table between it.
The furnishings are simple yet elegant, and easy to understand at a glance.
Su Xi glanced at her briefly before looking away and turning her gaze to Qiao Qiu. She still thought Qiao Qiu was prettier.
Qiao Qiu grabbed its wrist, bent down, and looked into its eyes.
That earnest look in his eyes made Su Xi's heart pound.
"Sister, what's wrong?"
"Tell me, are you him?"
"Him?" Su Xi looked at her, completely bewildered, her mind racing, trying to figure out which "him" she was referring to.
Qiao Qiu was somewhat disappointed. Su Xi's reaction just now was very similar to Zhao Yu Ce's, and she thought it was him.
But even if it is him, so what?
Even after Zhao Yuce is reborn, he will never remember her again.
Qiao Qiu was a little sad.
(Ring: I'm the one who's most upset, okay? I forgot I said you guys are enemies! Enemies! Are you really enemies?!)
When Su Xi saw the sadness in her eyes, her heart clenched, and she felt a pain so intense she could hardly breathe. "Sister, is he... the person you like?"
It took a lot of courage for it to ask that question. It didn't know why it was like this, but that's how it was.
Qiao Qiu released its wrist, closed her eyes, and felt as if a new wound had been ripped open in her heart, bleeding profusely. She straightened up, turned around, and walked to the French windows, looking at the gray sky outside.
Although Qiao Qiu closed her eyes quickly, Su Xi still saw her deepest pain. It was like the most glaring thing, and Su Xi felt extremely uncomfortable.
It walked over to her and stood beside her. "Don't I look a lot like him?"
Qiao Qiu took a deep breath and said, "Su Xi, if your existence is only to hurt me, what will you do?"
A trace of pain flashed in Su Xi's eyes. "No one can hurt you, including myself. If my existence is only for hurting you, then I would rather not exist."
"But what if I'd rather be hurt than experience the pain of losing you?"
Su Xi suddenly looked up at her, her dark eyes filled with undisguised shock.
Qiao Qiu's lips twitched slightly, her eyes regaining their calm expression. She looked down at it and said, "Although I don't know if you are him, I want to do what I'm doing. Would you be willing to come with me?"
Qiao Qiu's words seemed simple and clear, but contained profound meanings that Su Xi couldn't understand. However, it did understand the last sentence and nodded, "I'm willing."
"You said you were willing without asking me anything, wasn't that a bit too hasty?" Qiao Qiu chuckled.
"No matter what it is, I'm willing." Su Xi's eyes were firm.
Qiao Qiu's smile widened as she looked out at the world with a cheerful expression. "You know what? The world we grew up in wasn't like this before, but it's become like this now. I want this world to go back to how it was before. I know I don't have enough time, but I will do everything I can to make it happen."
Su Xi's eyes darkened for a moment, and she looked outside as well. "Sister, what do you want to do?"
"The first step is to bring all the useful research personnel to the southern city."
