Chapter Ninety-Seven - The White Hedgehog & the Owl

Good heavens! All I said was that I wanted to keep an owl as a pet.

Are you making a big deal out of this? Why are you reacting so strongly?

Seeing the hostile look on the owl couple across the street, Xu Qiaoqiao forced a smile. The most important thing now was to quickly pull Jun Qi away.

After the cat and hedgehog left, the owl couple didn't immediately lower their aggressive stance. Instead, they waited for a while and, finding that the cat and hedgehog hadn't returned, slowly relaxed.

"Coo coo".

The father owl snuggled up to the mother owl and affectionately pressed his nose against hers, savoring the moment of surviving the ordeal.

Honey, we are so lucky, although we don’t know why they are interested in our cubs.

The mother owl chimed in, "Yes, it's best that the children are alright."

If owls weren't solitary animals, their affair would have been exposed. It was revealed that a new pair had emerged in the forest: an owl and a white hedgehog, who were specifically targeting baby owls.

The warmth here was completely different from that on Xu Qiaoqiao's side. She was terrified by Jun Qi's sudden attack. Why did he want to attack them?

Are you itching for a fight?

God knows how panicked Xu Qiaoqiao was when the owl couple showed their aggressive side. You have to understand that she had never had any conflict with anyone since her previous life, let alone the kind of conflict where she actively provoked others.

Of course, the black snake from a few days ago doesn't count; that was the one that provoked us first.

"Coo coo?"

Jun Qi noticed Xu Qiaoqiao's actions and was immediately puzzled. "Don't you want to eat anymore?"

At this moment, Xu Qiaoqiao miraculously understood Jun Qi's meaning. That's right, how could an animal possibly be kind enough to raise other cubs, except to use them as food?

Xu Qiaoqiao: ...

What is it about me that makes you think I would want to eat baby owls?

I don't understand.

All he knows is eating. Xu Qiaoqiao scratched the feathers on Jun Qi's belly. Although this action did not cause him any discomfort, it was actually quite comfortable.

Xu Qiaoqiao thought with some regret, "I was wrong. I shouldn't have been so impatient at this time. I should have waited a few more days. After all, Jun Qi is just an owl who has recently come of age, just like an eighteen-year-old human man. He is full of energy and vitality. If this were an animal, wouldn't all he thinks about be eating?"

Seeing the little hedgehog suddenly become depressed, Jun Qi didn't quite understand, but he didn't dare to ask.

His intuition told him that asking would be pointless; the little hedgehog wouldn't tell him anyway.

Since that incident, Xu Qiaoqiao has never discussed the cubs with Jun Qi again, fearing that Jun Qi might misunderstand her meaning again. She thought that if she waited a few years until she was old, she could explain it to him clearly, and then it wouldn't be so ridiculous.

In the days that followed, Xu Qiaoqiao continued to do as she pleased, unaffected by anything. They rested as usual during the day and hunted at night.

Occasionally, Qiaoqiao would go fruit hunting with Junqi. After all, one gets tired of eating fruit, but of course, her greatest progress was far from that.

The biggest improvement is that she dares to catch earthworms all by herself, a hedgehog!

This made Xu Qiaoqiao excited for several days.

That day was just a coincidence, but who knew that the fruit would rot so quickly after it fell to the ground?

In just over a week, apart from the fruit on the tree, most of the fruit that had fallen to the ground had already rotted. If it were an ordinary little hedgehog, it probably wouldn't care about these things and would just eat them.

But Xu Qiaoqiao is different. Her core is still human. Her diet has changed because she has become a small animal, but she still can't get rid of some of her fears.

However, the fact that she caught a snake last time boosted Xu Qiaoqiao's confidence a lot. After all, snakes and earthworms are the same – they are both slippery creatures. And because Junjun used to feed her snakes, Xu Qiaoqiao is no longer very afraid.

As daylight hours shortened and temperatures dropped, fog began to thicken. After the first fog passed, leaves slowly turned yellow and fell, causing tens of thousands of leaves to dance in the air before finally drifting to the ground.

The sudden drop in temperature proves this point; it's already late autumn.

Judging by the timeline, winter will be here again in a few days.

This also marks the passing of Xu Qiaoqiao's first year in this world; it's truly nostalgic to think about it now.

Looking at the forest where the leaves had mostly fallen, Xu Qiaoqiao suddenly felt a pang of emotion. Time really flies; it felt like just yesterday she was enduring the summer heat.

Now, in the blink of an eye, winter is just around the corner.

Hedgehogs will seek a safe enough place to spend the winter months. Sometimes, they will coexist with other creatures. After all, the burrows are large, and hibernating animals will generously share their dwellings to provide a safe place for smaller animals that need to hibernate.

But Xu Qiaoqiao doesn't need to worry about this at all. Although she always complains that Jun Qi's little nest isn't very good, it is Jun Qi's little nest, isn't it?

The point isn't the small apartment, but whose apartment it is. She has Jun Qi, so she doesn't need to worry about anything.

Knowing that she was about to hibernate, Xu Qiaoqiao's appetite had obviously increased a lot in the past few days, as she was storing fat for the upcoming hibernation.

"Coo coo?"

Jun Qi was somewhat worried. These past few days, the little hedgehogs had been eating more than before. Because the food supply was decreasing as the temperature dropped, they had to search a wider area for edible items.
