"Alright, let's hurry back! When we get to Liulin Town, let's stop by the post office. The package I sent should arrive soon!"
Lin Xue drank some water and ate an egg, then urged Gu Heping to hurry up and get on the road.
"Honey, sit tight, we're about to set off!"
Gu Heping spread the old quilt he had brought on the oxcart, and after Lin Xue was settled, he cracked the whip and began to drive the ox towards the main road.
"Wife, why did it take you so long to go back to your parents' home? You have no idea how much your mother and the children missed you!"
Walking down the avenue, Gu Heping couldn't help but want to talk to Lin Xue.
"It's been several years since I've been home. I originally planned to stay for ten days or half a month and then head back, but my parents and two older brothers really couldn't bear to leave me, and that's how I've been delayed for so long!"
"Besides, are only my mother and children missing me?"
Lin Xue sat on the oxcart, looking at the surrounding scenery, and couldn't help but tease Gu Heping.
"Of course I miss you the most, but I've been too shy to say it!"
It was still quite hot outside, and Gu Heping put the straw hat he had brought on Lin Xue's head.
The two walked and talked, and soon arrived at Liulin Town.
"Xiaoxue, wait a moment on the oxcart. I'll go ask if your package has arrived!"
Gu Heping didn't let Lin Xue get out of the car; he went to the post office himself to inquire about the situation.
After Gu Heping left, Lin Xue jumped off the oxcart.
I went to the state-run restaurant across the street, and saw that the sign was still hanging there. It was long past lunchtime, and all they had left were steamed buns and stir-fried shredded potatoes.
Lin Xue didn't mind and ordered a plate of shredded potatoes and five steamed buns.
When she came out of the state-run restaurant, she saw that the oxcart was piled high with packages of all sizes.
"Xiaoxue, what did you send all of these? Why are there so many?"
Gu Heping made five or six trips to finally load all the packages onto the oxcart.
Good heavens! Has this silly wife emptied her mother-in-law's house?
"I bought some things in Suzhou that we don't have here in Northeast China, and some of them were prepared by my parents and brothers!"
Lin Xue naturally wouldn't tell Gu Heping the truth, so she gave him a vague answer and climbed onto the oxcart.
"Honey, there's a lot of stuff. Let me find a rope to secure it!"
Gu Heping took out a string of rope from the cloth bag hanging on the oxcart and secured all the large packages to the oxcart.
Then he led the cow toward Gujia Village.
"Peace, are you hungry?"
"These are steamed buns and stir-fried shredded potatoes I just bought at the state-run restaurant. Let me get you one!"
As Lin Xue spoke, she broke open a large white steamed bun, scooped some shredded potatoes inside, and handed it to Gu Heping.
Why waste that money?
"We'll be home soon. Mom knew you were coming home today, so she must have prepared lots of delicious food!"
Despite saying that, Gu Heping still accepted the steamed bun with shredded potatoes that his wife had prepared for him.
I took a big bite and had to admit, this white steamed bun was really delicious.
What's more, paired with these crisp and spicy shredded potatoes, the flavor is simply irresistible.
Seeing how much Gu Heping was enjoying his meal, Lin Xue got one for herself too!
Although she had traveled in a sleeper car before, the food there was really not very good, and Lin Xue hadn't eaten much in the past few days.
"Giddy up!"
Gu Heping ate two steamed buns with shredded potatoes, and feeling a bit full, he felt more energetic.
He cracked his whip and led his wife toward Gujia Village.
By this time, the sun was already setting in the west, and you could see farmers working on both sides of the road, packing up their tools and hurrying home.
Lin Xue entered the village just as work was ending.
So the news of her return spread throughout the entire Gu family village immediately.
In no time, the entire Gu Family Village became lively, with waves of people coming to watch the spectacle at the Gu Family.
Lin Xue asked Gu Heping to move all the things she brought back into the house. Now that the Gu family members were coming and going, it wasn't the time to take things out.
It wasn't until dusk that Captain Gu gave Old Madam Gu a signal.
Seeing that the Gu family was starting to chase people away, the villagers who had been arriving one after another scattered and went back to their own homes.
After the villagers left, Grandma Gu directed her eldest daughter-in-law to take out the slaughtered chicken and stew it.
Then he asked his second daughter-in-law to knead the fermented dough into small pieces, put them in a pot and steam them into cornbread.
The men in charge of the family either fetched water or chopped wood.
The children of the Gu family went to feed the chickens and chase the dogs.
The two children, Gu Ming and Gu Fang, were on either side of Lin Xue, holding her hands and staying close to their mother.
The two daughters-in-law of the Gu family did not dare to show any displeasure to Lin Xue, and did not dare to say anything as they watched Lin Xue wandering around the yard with the children.
Anyway, in the past, the third son's wife never did housework.
That's truly someone who wouldn't even bother to pick up a fallen oil bottle!
At the dinner table, no one dared to speak.
After receiving Captain Gu's permission, everyone ate their own food, and no one dared to look up or say anything more.
In the very center of the table was a large pot of stewed young rooster with green beans and potatoes.
The Gu family members were very perceptive; after each person took two pieces of meat, they stopped using their chopsticks to take any more.
Lin Xue, without any hesitation, picked up four or five pieces of meat and put them in her bowl, eating them all.
As for her two children, the old lady had already divided up the meat for them in advance.
