Chapter 40: Passerby A in a Novel about Going to the Countryside in the 1970s (14)

After getting up in the morning, Jiang Yue stretched her body and made a simple breakfast. She didn't make one for Liu Ruyan and Li Mengqi, as they wouldn't get up for another hour or two, and probably wouldn't wake up until noon.

Jiang Yue was reading in the study when Liu Ruyan and Li Mengqi woke up. It was already 11 o'clock, and the two of them skipped breakfast and went straight to lunch.

After dinner, the three of them sat in the living room, chatting about where to go for fun. It was rare for Jiang Yue to have a long vacation, so when asked for her opinion, Jiang Yue thought for a moment and said, "I want to go back to my hometown."

Jiang Yue has only been back once in the past few years, while Liu Ruyan and Li Mengqi have been back many times. This is because Jiang Yue's home is there, and after their business grew, they also invested there, not to make money, but because they hoped their hometown would become better and better.

Li Mengqi thought for a moment and said, "If you want to go, let's go back. How many days of vacation do you have left? Is that enough time?"

"I called the hospital and said I'd already finished the emergency surgeries, and the others could handle the rest."

After saying that, she called the hospital director and told him that she wanted to go home. He didn't stop her. The hospital needed Jiang Yue right now, so he approved it quickly and even gave her an extra half month. After Jiang Yue hung up the phone, Liu Ruyan and Li Mengqi started packing their things.

After Jiang Yue finished her call, Li Mengqi called her assistant to book a train ticket and then called the branch office to arrange a car to take her to the station. After hanging up, she continued packing her things. There wasn't much to bring, and everyone had room, so she finished packing quickly.

In the afternoon, I went out and bought some gifts for the brigade leader and his men. We set off early the next morning and arrived at our destination in the evening.

Jiang Yue hadn't been back for several years. Looking at the station, which felt both strange and somewhat familiar, she was filled with emotion. Li Mengqi and Liu Ruyan knew how Jiang Yue felt, so they waited for her silently. After a while, Jiang Yue composed herself and said, "Let's go."

Li Mengqi found the car arranged for her by the branch office, got the car keys and let the others leave first. The three of them planned to drive back by themselves. After leaving the station, they headed towards Jiangjiaba. Halfway there, they found a secluded place and took out the gifts they had bought from their spatial storage. Since the trunk couldn't hold them all, they put some on the roof of the car.

While they were chatting, they saw a car stopped ahead, trying to flag down another vehicle. The three of them were skilled and daring, mainly because there was no sign of an ambush on the highway. They stopped in front of the broken-down car, got out, and walked over. The man in front of the car was about to speak when he saw the three of them and froze in surprise, saying, "Sister Xiaoyue? Is that you? And you two, are you Li Zhiqing and Liu Zhiqing?"

Jiang Yue was also stunned. She looked at the young man in front of her carefully, frowned, rolled her eyes, and suddenly her eyes lit up. She said, "Is this Er Gouzi?"

The guy on the other side, Er Gouzi, was also a little embarrassed and scratched his head, saying, "Sister Xiaoyue! It really is you. I am Er Gouzi, but now everyone calls me Hongjun."

Both of them were pleasantly surprised. Jiang Yue went over and hugged Er Gouzi, saying, "You little rascal, you've grown up."

Er Gouzi was a little embarrassed. The two were old acquaintances. Jiang Yue hadn't seen Er Gouzi since she last came back five or six years ago. In fact, the two hadn't seen each other for more than ten years. Er Gouzi had met Liu Ruyan and the others a few times.

"Sister Xiaoyue, you're finally back! My dad and mom have been talking about you, saying you've been so busy being a doctor that you haven't had any time for anything."

Because in previous years, some villagers went to Beijing for medical treatment, and it was Jiang Yue who performed the surgery, so the villagers knew that Jiang Yue was a doctor.

After catching up for a while, Jiang Yue asked, "By the way, what happened to you? Did your car break down?"

"It's not broken, it's just out of oil. The fuel tank seems to be leaking oil."

"That's perfect. We have spare gas in the car. Mengqi, could you get him a can? By the way, are you also going back to the village?"

"Yes, Sister Xiaoyue, I drive for my boss now. I had the day off today and went home, but my car broke down on the way."

Li Mengqi went to the car and got a can of oil. Er Gouzi added the oil and started the car. He drove ahead and led the way, with Jiang Yue and the other two following behind. They returned to the village in about half an hour.

Jiang Yue and the other two didn't go home either. They planned to go to the brigade leader's house first. The brigade leader was playing chess with his old friend in the square in front of the house. Since Li Mengqi and Liu Ruyan set up a factory here and established a rural collective cooperative, the villagers are now basically free from worries about food and drink, and have more free time.

He had just finished a game of chess when he saw his son drive back, followed by an unfamiliar car. When the car stopped in front of him, Er Gouzi got out, pointed to the car behind him, and said to the team leader, "Dad, look who's back."

The captain was getting old and his eyesight was failing. He wore his reading glasses and looked around for a while before he recognized Jiang Yue getting out of the car. He immediately greeted her with a big smile, "Oh my, isn't this Yue? When did you get back?"

Jiang Yue quickly stepped forward, shook the captain's hand, and greeted him warmly, "Captain, I just arrived and came especially to see you!"

During the greetings, Liu Ruyan and Li Mengqi got out of the car with gifts. The captain warmly invited the three of them to sit in his home and even asked his wife to kill a chicken to entertain the guests.

The group walked into the courtyard chatting and laughing, talking about the changes over the years. The brigade leader said, "Thanks to the three of you, everyone in the village is living a much better life now. We can afford to eat meat. Fewer of our village's children are going out to work. They can find jobs in the village now, unlike other villages where I heard there aren't any young people left."

Jiang Yue was overjoyed to learn that the village was developing better and better. The brigade leader's wife told Er Gouzi to clean up the chickens: "Xiao Yue, you're finally back. I thought I wouldn't see you before I died."

After saying that, the aunt started crying. She had truly treated Jiang Yue like a daughter during those years. Jiang Yue was also feeling bad. She hugged her aunt and said, "Auntie, I'm back now."

Li Mengqi and Liu Ruyan had returned a few years ago, and the brigade leader knew what they were doing. He inquired about their recent situation, mainly about Jiang Yue's situation over the years. Jiang Yue gave the brigade leader and his aunt a general account of her life over the years, and they all murmured, "That's good, that's good."

Before they knew it, night had fallen. After having dinner at the brigade leader's house, Jiang Yue and her two companions decided to visit other villagers the next day and said goodbye to the brigade leader's family.

After leaving the brigade leader's house, Jiang Yue and the other two drove back to their old family home. Although they hadn't been back for many years, the house was still well-preserved. They cleaned it up a bit and then went to bed.
