Jiang Yue breathed a sigh of relief when she saw that the system was working properly. Otherwise, she didn't know how she would have survived the extreme heat. During the five years of extreme cold, she mainly relied on the coal she had stockpiled for heating. Jiang Yue felt that the coal was the most valuable thing, otherwise there wouldn't have been enough diesel fuel.
It's going to be extremely hot again soon, and with several years of extreme heat, who knows if the coal will spontaneously combust outside? Jiang Yue needs to figure out a way to properly manage the coal supply.
Jiang Yue divided the large coal pile into many smaller piles, compacted and sealed them with mud, so that even if a fire broke out, the damage would not be too great.
After sorting out the coal and firewood, we realized we wouldn't need either of them. The next few years were unbearably hot; at 60 degrees Celsius, people would die after just a short time outside. Fortunately, the shelters were located deep underground, and with ventilation and central air conditioning, while it was tough, it wasn't fatal.
Jiang Yue is now worried about food and water. Even if the country has stored a year's worth of grain, how much can it store? How many people are there in the country? It's been six years already, and food is getting less and less. Right now, people in the base who don't have to eat are only eating one meal a day to keep themselves from starving. What about in a few more years?
Five or six years have passed, and the country still hasn't developed drought- and heat-resistant seeds, nor has it been developed anywhere else in the world. Moreover, farming requires land, and land needs rest and recuperation. Jiang Yue wondered if the country had made any preparations. She guessed that others had definitely thought of everything more thoroughly than she had, so she decided not to worry about it.
With nothing else to do, she reinforced her courtyard wall. During the extreme cold, no one was immune to her attacks, but she had guns and cannons to drive them away. The main reason was the effective surveillance system she had set up. It would sound an alarm if anyone approached. She activated it when the extreme cold began, and now she just needs to check the surveillance cameras every day to make sure they aren't damaged.
Although the protective measures were very good, it's always better to be safe than sorry. Jiang Yue now checks herself once a week. Fortunately, in the years following the extreme cold, the country also increased patrols, and those who broke the law were severely punished, which directly scared away a large number of people.
A month later, the extreme heat officially began. Jiang Yue looked out the window and saw that the air in the yard was distorted. After a while, the surveillance alarm went off. Jiang Yue saw that it was a military patrol vehicle passing by, so she canceled the alarm.
Jiang Yue took out a chilled fruit salad from her space, and Hua Hua and Da Hei came over. Jiang Yue fed them a little, and seeing that Hua Hua still wanted to eat, Jiang Yue ate quickly and finished. Now she has to eat secretly, otherwise she feels guilty every time the two of them look at her. She can't stand their cute eyes. In the end, she fed Hua Hua a small fish and Da Hei a bone.
When they were first brought home, they could run around in the yard, but now they can only run around inside the house. At first, they insisted on going out, and Jiang Yue couldn't do anything about it. She opened the door and let them out, but after running out a few times, they behaved themselves and stopped going out.
After feeding the cats, Jiang Yue checked the thermometer. It was noon, and the temperature was about 65 degrees Celsius. Going outside now would probably make them faint from the heat in just a few minutes. She checked the coal pile and found it was fine. As for the remaining items in the warehouse, they had already been put into the bunker and cellar. The temperature in the cellar was much lower than at ground level, and Jiang Yue had also turned on the air conditioning in the bunker to keep them at a comfortable temperature.
There were also some foods that Jiang Yue kept in the cold storage. The cold storage was very small, only a few square meters in size, and it consumed a lot of electricity. Under normal circumstances, Jiang Yue was reluctant to turn it on. She had no choice but to turn it on when the temperature was extremely high for too long. Fortunately, the earthquake did not damage it, otherwise she would not have been able to use it even if she wanted to.
The daily power generation is barely enough to keep up with demand. If we use any more electrical appliances, the voltage won't be high enough. A few days later, many people moved out of the underground shelter. Their accommodation buildings were also completed, and the open space was basically covered with solar panels. The electricity generated was enough to run the central air conditioning. If you ask what technology has made the biggest progress in recent years, Jiang Yue can only say it's solar power generation.
After all, the extreme cold and heat would continue for several more rounds, and they couldn't stay in the shelter forever. A few months later, when the orders had some surplus, Jiang Yue spent some gold and sugar to cut in line and have the photovoltaic energy storage system upgraded. It stored more electricity and the power generation efficiency was also much higher.
I had them film the installation process again, and after it was completed, I bought two sets of pre-installed parts and some easily damaged accessories to put my mind at ease, knowing that I would have replacements if anything broke in the future.
Jiang Yue actually wanted to buy the clothes they were wearing, but unfortunately they wouldn't sell them. Jiang Yue felt that there was some kind of high-tech involved. The fact that they could still work in the sweltering heat was all thanks to these clothes. Jiang Yue saw that one person's clothes had been scratched with a sharp object but hadn't torn, so the quality was top-notch.
It's probably not widely available to the general public yet, but maybe everyone will be able to buy it in a few years. I'll definitely buy a few sets then. This clothing seems quite useful; it might even come in handy in special circumstances. There's also a uniform for extremely cold weather; I wonder if it's part of a set.
A year or two later, protective suits were distributed on a large scale. Unfortunately, each person could only receive one set, so Jiang Yue's plan to buy several sets fell through. She heard that drought-resistant and cold-resistant seeds were also on the horizon, after all, a team of scholars from all over the world had been assembled for quite some time.
However, the current practice is still mainly to build greenhouses. Since people have been able to go out and move around, more and more greenhouses have been built. Jiang Yue guesses that although the seeds have improved, the improvement is not significant, and they cannot grow at a temperature of 60 degrees Celsius.
Jiang Yue took some time to visit Zhou Xue and Lin Yue. They hadn't seen each other for a while. After meeting, Jiang Yue stayed home again. Ten years have passed in the blink of an eye. Another round of extreme cold and heat has come. The country has changed a lot in the past ten years. Even though the country was prepared, the harsh conditions are an objective reality. Of the 1.4 billion people, only about 700 million remain.
