Jiangnan.
The spring rain is continuous, carrying the unique gentleness of the water town.
Qifei, carrying the child, quickly ran to the eaves to take shelter from the rain.
The rain came suddenly today. She hadn't gone very far and thought she wouldn't be so lucky as to be caught in the rain.
As it turned out, the bad things came true, and it just so happened that the rain started falling right when she was about to go back.
If it were her, she wouldn't be bothered; she would just run home.
The key issue is that she has a child with her, and she's afraid the child will catch a cold if they get wet in the rain.
This is not an era where a cold medicine can solve everything; a cold can be fatal.
She quickly found the nearest place to shelter from the rain and stood there.
"Little Ke'er, did you get wet?" Qi Fei quickly put the child down and carefully checked the child's body for water.
The little girl shook her head and said in a childish voice, "Mother, I didn't get wet, it's you who got wet."
Qi Fei smiled at her, her voice gentle, "Mother is fine, it doesn't matter that Mother got wet, as long as Xiao Ke'er is alright."
"Mother, let Ke'er wipe you clean." As she spoke, Ke'er took out a small handkerchief that her mother had specially embroidered for her and carefully wiped the water off Qi Fei.
The heartwarming interaction between the two beautiful women, one tall and one short, at the entrance quickly caught the attention of the people inside the store.
One of the people sitting down asked the shop owner curiously, "Boss, whose family is so lucky? The wife and child are both so beautiful."
The boss smiled and said, "A lucky person died, leaving her a widow with two children."
"Ah, what a pity, what a waste of talent." The man looked at Qi Fei with regret, thinking that she was so beautiful, yet she hadn't looked for someone else.
As soon as he finished speaking, the people at the next table suddenly stood up and strode outside.
Qifei looked up and saw that the rain had lessened considerably. She hesitated for a moment, wondering whether she should simply pick up Xiao Ke'er and run home in one go.
When we get back, I'll boil some water and let her soak in it; that should be fine.
"Qifei." A voice filled with gritted teeth and disbelief made Qifei turn around.
She saw the man stand up in surprise, and was a little flustered, "Master..."
Shura looked at Qifei in disbelief. He had been searching for her for so many years, and he never expected that she would be so close to the capital.
His gaze fell on Xiao Ke'er, who was staring at Shura with her big, bright black eyes, full of curiosity.
Shura's heart trembled slightly as a strange feeling rose within him. This child looked very much like him; it was clearly his child.
So, Qifei was already pregnant when she left.
This realization instantly brought tears to his eyes. "Why didn't you wait for me to come back?"
Qi Fei picked up Xiao Ke'er, her voice choked with emotion, "Master is already married, do you still need me to wait?"
After not seeing him for several years, Qi Fei was too lazy to pretend to be a dutiful servant. Anyway, she had already left the Xiu family and was no longer anyone's servant.
"Who told you I got married?" Shura knew that Qifei had heard some rumors.
Qi Fei, tears streaming down her face, was stunned by Xiu Luo's words. She looked at him in disbelief, "What? Wasn't Master betrothed?"
"The Emperor did indeed intend to bestow a marriage upon me, but I refused and returned all military power to the Emperor," Shura said casually.
Although the emperor doted on Shura, he was also wary of him, fearing that Shura's achievements would overshadow his own.
This arranged marriage was also a test, but Shura refused without hesitation and exchanged his military power with the emperor, retiring to his hometown.
This left the emperor in a complicated situation, and he wanted to offer some compensation to Shura.
"Having served in the government for so many years, I only wish to plead with Your Majesty on behalf of the soldiers to treat them well and not let them feel disheartened."
Shura left the capital. He had promised Qifei that he would be a real couple with her, so he only went back to find Qifei after he had settled everything.
But when he returned to the border, the man had vanished.
Over the years, he has never given up the search. If it weren't for the letter from the mansion saying that the old lady was so worried about him that she had fallen ill, he would still be searching for him outside.
The Xiu family has gone from initial fury to a state of calm.
They never imagined that Shura would give up his promising future for a maid.
However, after Shura had a thorough talk with his father and the old lady, they didn't say anything more.
At first, Madam Xiu was happy. Xiu Luo was no longer a general, and only Xiu Rong and Xiu's father were still serving as officials in the court. The maid was nowhere to be seen, so Xiu Rong lost all hope.
But who knew that after Shura stopped being a general, the ladies who used to fawn over her gradually distanced themselves and stopped taking her out to play. It was then that she realized how much the Shu family would change without Shura.
The only thing that comforted her was that the chief priest's family did not break off the engagement and still married Lin Wan'er off as promised.
After Xiu Rong got married, she never mentioned Qi Fei again. Seeing that she had a good relationship with Lin Wan'er, Madam Xiu was finally relieved.
Qi Fei, realizing she had made a blunder, showed no embarrassment whatsoever. Instead, she said matter-of-factly, "How was I supposed to know you didn't agree? Everyone in the streets was talking about the Emperor's bestowal of a marriage. I was heartbroken, which is why I left."
Shura sighed; he knew it would be like this.
"I've found you now. Would you like to come back with me?" Shura looked at the little Ke'er who was nestled in Qi Fei's arms, secretly watching him, and his heart melted.
He awkwardly took Xiao Ke'er into his arms, "Is this our daughter?"
Qifei bit her lip. "I don't want to go back. I'm fine here taking care of the child."
She didn't want to live that kind of life after she went back.
There are many dark secrets in the grand mansion, and she didn't want her child to live in such a place.
"If you don't want to go back, then I'll move in with you." Shura didn't seem to mind. "So you won't have to tell others that the child's father is dead."
Qi Fei felt a little guilty. She had come here heavily pregnant, and people would definitely ask her about her husband. What could she say? She would just say he was dead and that would be the end of it, saving her from being asked so many questions.
The rain gradually stopped, and Shura followed Qifei back to the courtyard where they were currently staying.
Because Qifei lives alone with her two children, it's just a small courtyard with only one side room, where the mother and her two children live together.
"Didn't you say there was another child?" Shura didn't see the other child.
"Brother went to school and hasn't come back yet?" Xiao Ke'er could probably tell that Xiu Luo meant no harm, so she dared to speak to her.
"Uncle, do you know my mom?" Little Ke'er blinked her big, cute eyes at Xiu Luo.
"Little Ke'er, you should call me Daddy." Shura's heart softened when he saw Little Ke'er's adorable appearance.
"Father?" Little Ke'er stared wide-eyed at Xiu Luo. "Are you really my father?"
As she spoke, Ke'er's eyes quickly filled with tears. "Are you really my daddy? Does that mean Ke'er has a father?"
The child's question saddened Shura. "Yes, our little Ke'er has always had a father."
