While Gu Jiangli was asleep, she heard Zizai remind her that a conspiracy was brewing not far away.
She sat up in bed with a sigh, thinking to herself that the comfortable days were indeed not going to last long.
Xie Shiyan, who was on the opposite bed, seemed to have noticed the movement on her side and opened his eyes as well.
"Aren't you going to sleep yet?"
Gu Jiangli was somewhat surprised, "Did I disturb you?"
She didn't say anything, she just sat up, did that disturb Xie Shiyan?
Xie Shiyan turned over, his back to Gu Jiangli, and said:
"This is the vigilance that soldiers should have. On the battlefield, war can break out at any time."
Gu Jiangli listened silently and lay down, turning her head to look at the back of Xie Shiyan's head.
After a long silence, she finally said:
"Shi Yan, haven't you had a good night's sleep in a long time?"
Xie Shiyan stiffened and did not reply.
"The war is over, you don't need to be so tense, especially since this is your own home."
Xie Shiyan remained silent for a long while before speaking:
"Even my own home isn't necessarily that safe."
"But I wouldn't hurt you," Gu Jiangli blurted out instinctively. "You don't trust me at all?"
"I wasn't talking about you."
"...Oh, are the Xie family members really that hostile towards you? They even try to do bad things to you while you're sleeping."
"You have a lot of questions."
Gu Jiangli pouted, "Didn't we just happen to be asking about this?"
Silence filled the room.
As Gu Jiangli looked at the full moon outside the window, Xie Shiyan, who had lost his mother when he was a child, suddenly appeared in his mind. He remembered Xie Shiyan hiding at home alone, too afraid to sleep.
Although it's unclear why the Xie family treats Xie Shiyan this way, he must have experienced their rejection.
“Shi Yan,” she said softly, “you no longer need to live in fear. You are now a general, and even the Emperor is wary of you. The Xie family will not dare to do anything to you anymore.”
“I know,” Xie Shiyan replied simply.
Gu Jiangli added, "I hope my good sleep can infect you."
After she finished speaking, she closed her eyes.
Soon after, Gu Jiangli's breathing became even.
Xie Shiyan turned around gently, and Gu Jiangli's chest was rising and falling rhythmically.
The bright moonlight shone on her face.
The soft moonlight made her face even more radiant.
"You're sleeping soundly."
Xie Shiyan slept soundly for an unknown amount of time, perhaps because the room was too quiet. He stared at Gu Jiangli's face for a long time.
Gu Jiangli had been awake for a long time before he finally woke up.
Xie Shiyan was always the first one to get up.
"What time is it?"
Gu Jiangli replied, "It's Chen Shi (7-9 AM). How did you sleep last night?"
Xie Shiyan turned his head away, "So-so."
After he finished speaking, he realized that Gu Jiangli had already dressed up and was ready to meet someone.
Where are you going?
Gu Jiangli picked out a simple hairpin for herself and said:
"I'm going to see my in-laws. General Xie and Madam Liu sent someone to say that, according to custom, I should pay my respects to them. They even sent someone to take me there."
Xie Shiyan snorted coldly, annoyed: "When did you become so rule-abiding?"
"Of course I went over and told them that I wasn't going to follow the rules. It's better to say some things face to face."
She quite enjoyed watching General Xie and his wife get their comeuppance.
Aren't you worried they'll make things difficult for you?
"Does the general think I'm afraid of being challenged?"
Xie Shiyan stared at her for a few seconds.
"You are indeed not afraid."
"Yes, I'm leaving now. I'll definitely be back soon."
Gu Jiangli stepped out of the room.
Several maids immediately came forward to greet them.
He wished he could take her to General Xie immediately.
Gu Jiangli was about to turn around and say goodbye to Xie Shiyan again when she caught a glimpse of a pale yellow light out of the corner of her eye. She was wondering about it when a maid distracted her.
"Miss Gu, you look beautiful in that silk robe today. Did the General choose it especially for you? It's clear that the General cares deeply for you."
"Oh, I chose this myself. Does it look good? I think it looks great too."
"...Miss Gu has a discerning eye, truly extraordinary. The jasmine hairpin in your hair, the color of mutton fat, is also something you've taken a liking to, isn't it? It certainly suits you perfectly."
"Oh, this was a gift from Shi Yan. I think it's very pretty too."
Gu Jiangli wanted to end the conversation quickly, not wanting to get entangled in any more words with the maidservant beside General Xie.
She would say the opposite of what she was told, and the maid's expression kept changing throughout the journey.
It took her about the time it takes for an incense stick to burn before she arrived at General Xie's residence.
A man and a woman are leisurely drinking tea.
Upon seeing her arrive, General Xie merely glanced at her briefly before continuing to drink his tea.
Madam Liu spoke first: "Miss Gu, come, have a drink first. Try this year's new Baihao Yinzhen tea. I've heard that young ladies and gentlemen love to drink it. Why don't you try some?"
Although Liu offered her tea, she did not ask her to sit down, but instead held the teacup in mid-air.
Gu Jiangli stood two steps away and said:
"Thank you for your kindness, but I don't drink tea. I'm a light sleeper and it will keep me awake."
Liu's hand froze helplessly in mid-air, and she could only put down the teacup again.
“Miss Gu, there’s no need to be hostile towards us. The master is just a bit rigid. You’re quick-witted and intelligent, so don’t take it to heart.”
“I don’t mind, so please get straight to the point.”
General Xie looked up and slammed his teacup down on the table.
As if on command, the door to the room behind Gu Jiangli closed, and the originally bright room instantly became somewhat dim.
