With a faint smile on his lips, Jiang Huaizhi passively followed Gu Jiangli back into the house.
He gave Huaiyu a wink, and Huaiyu immediately turned around and silently walked in the direction behind them.
Jiang Huai saw Huaiyu walk away and coughed lightly twice, covering his mouth.
Gu Jiangli slowed her pace at the sound of her coughing: "Huaizhi, are you alright?"
She had almost forgotten that the person next to her was a patient.
"It's alright, it's alright. You don't need to rush me back to my room. Staying inside isn't necessarily good for my recovery."
"How could that be? Your body is still better suited for rest." Gu Jiangli retorted somewhat stubbornly.
Jiang Huaizhi's eyes were gentle as water, and he said, "A couple of days ago, the doctor told me that my room is damp and cold, and is actually not suitable for people with heart and lung deficiencies to live in for a long time."
Gu Jiangli stopped and thought for a moment.
The room was indeed a bit chilly at night, but since summer was just around the corner, she didn't find the chill uncomfortable at all.
But for Jiang Huaizhi, it was indeed not a suitable time to recuperate.
She nodded, agreeing with his statement: "So, you didn't want to live here anymore, which is why you had a new attic built in the east courtyard."
"Yes, it's quiet there, and the sunshine is great. We can move there in another two or three months. Besides, it's quite far from Huaisong's residence. If Huaisong still wants to do something to you, he'll have to go through Father's courtyard first. He's afraid of Father, so he probably won't dare to be so presumptuous anymore."
Gu Jiangli had been listening quietly, but her expression gradually changed.
When he mentioned Jiang Huaisong's ulterior motives towards her, Gu Jiangli always felt as if he knew something.
She instinctively wanted to explain, "Huaizhi, there's nothing between me and the Second Young Master."
"Of course I know. You've forgotten that I was the one who testified when Huaisong bullied you before."
"Yes, that makes sense."
“I know Huaisong’s character. He is lustful and has had improper thoughts about you in the past. There’s no guarantee he’ll change his ways. Even though he’s married now, he might not be able to control himself.”
Gu Jiangli didn't say anything; everything he said was correct.
Jiang Huaisong certainly doesn't restrain himself, and there's even a suspicion that he's going to become even more outrageous.
Jiang Huaizhi added, “Jiang Li, if Huaisong really does something to displease you, or says anything to belittle you, don’t be afraid and suffer in silence just because he’s my brother. You should talk back if you need to, and fight back if you need to. If he dares to complain to Father and Mother about you, I have my own ways to deal with him, understand?”
Gu Jiangli felt a warmth in her heart. "Yes, I understand."
And she has already done so.
That kick was very forceful; it should have kept Jiang Huaisong in pain for at least two days.
Jiang Huaizhi's words to her also implied that he was supporting her.
This was clearly intended to allow her to deal with Jiang Huaisong's ill intentions without any restraint.
As Jiang Huaisong's elder brother, he could only play a role in admonishing and comforting Jiang Huaisong before Jiang Huaisong committed his crimes.
When Jiang Huaisong actually does something rebellious, she shouldn't silently endure it, but should directly retaliate.
Even if Jiang Huaizhi hadn't said it, she would have done it anyway.
But since Jiang Huaizhi said that, he was completely on her side.
"Huaizhi, he is your brother after all. If I really hit him because he said a few unpleasant things to me, are you really not going to hold a grudge against me?"
Jiang Huai chuckled: "Of course, he deserves it. If it really happens, tell me so I can reprimand him in front of my father and mother."
"Okay, if it happens again, I promise I won't hide it from you." But she wouldn't say anything about what happened today. "But I hope this kind of thing won't happen again."
"That would be the best, of course."
————
Jiang Huaisong seemed to have really been hurt by the kick, and he didn't bother her for several days.
After losing face at the City Lord's wife's place, Sun Chan kept quiet for a few days.
Gu Jiangli quickly understood why Jiang Huaizhi's residence was unsuitable for recuperating.
She was always awakened by the conversations of the servants passing by outside the house.
In the early morning, since she was a light sleeper and didn't need to greet the city lord and his wife, Jiang Huaizhi allowed her to sleep in.
Unfortunately, the noise they made while doing odd jobs was too hard to ignore.
She hasn't had a good night's sleep in for several days.
This made her check on the construction progress of the pavilion from time to time. She felt that in the entire city lord's mansion, she wanted to move here even more than Jiang Huaizhi.
That day, she was awakened again by the sound of conversation.
This time, she didn't struggle to cover her ears with a pillow and force herself to sleep. Instead, she opened her eyes and silently pricked up her ears.
She wanted to hear what these servants were discussing on a daily basis.
There are just so many things we could never finish saying.
A young woman spoke first, her tone displeased: "The Second Madam's temper is so difficult to please! It's just that I woke her up from her sleep, why is she so angry?"
Another woman asked with concern, "What's wrong? Did she scold you again?"
"That's right! But the Second Madam's room is very close to the accounting office! They have to deliver account books, do the accounting, and take inventory, which will naturally make noise! Besides, it's already past noon, who would want to sleep at that time?"
"Are we servants supposed to do nothing but wait for her to wake up before we get to work? If we do that, won't the steward kick me out?"
The woman had suffered a lot of grievances, and she complained and cried at the same time.
