Her words sounded awkward and stiff, but the emperor's bloodshot eyes slowly regained their clarity.
His heavy breathing subsided, and his sword-wielding hand stopped trembling.
He looked at her with disbelief, his eyes seeming to try and see holes through Gu Jiangli.
The emperor remained silent and motionless for a long time. Gu Jiangli's arm grew numb from holding this position, so she tentatively called out, "Your Majesty?"
The emperor then forcefully shook off her hand and threw away the sword in his hand.
He staggered back to his chair, gave a wink to the eunuchs outside, and they came in to carry the body out.
Their movements were practiced and skillful, as if they had done it hundreds of times before.
After the emperor was seated, the first thing he asked was, "How is your foot healing?"
Gu Jiangli breathed a sigh of relief. The emperor should no longer have any murderous intent. She composed herself and said, "Thank you for your concern, Your Majesty. My foot is fully healed."
The emperor, resting his chin on his hand, asked again, "Didn't you investigate who secretly hid the needle in your shoe to murder you?"
Gu Jiangli's heart tightened.
The emperor must have had his reasons for asking this question.
The fact that a maid had left Ronghui Pavilion was something that anyone could easily find out by asking around, so she couldn't hide it.
"Your Majesty, we have investigated. It was a maid named Wanxin who was bribed and misled, which is why she attacked me. It was my poor management that caused the disruption of Your Majesty's birthday banquet."
As long as she admits her mistake quickly, the emperor will have nothing to say.
Hearing her say that, the emperor chuckled: "So you sent Wanxin away?"
Gu Jiangli feigned surprise, "How did Your Majesty know?"
The emperor didn't speak, but looked at her intently, as if trying to see something in her eyes.
After a moment, he said again, "Never mind, the matter is over anyway. You didn't come here today for this matter. You came to serve the emperor. Did your aunt teach you how to do it?"
