Chapter 9 Quickly Transmigrated! Got Bankrupt Overnight and Became the Young Master’s Bodyguard (18)
"Hey, isn't this our Young Master Lin?" a burly bodyguard said in a sinister tone, "Why, are you so tired on your first day of patrol?"
I recognized him; he was an old employee of the Shen family named Li Qiang, who had always disliked me.
"Master Lin, how does it feel to be on patrol?" another bodyguard echoed, "Is it much worse than your previous life?"
I glanced at them coldly and said nothing.
"Why, are you dumb?" Li Qiang continued to mock, "It's really admirable that such a poor young man would do such hard work."
I took a deep breath and suppressed the anger in my heart. "It's not shameful to work with your own hands."
My words stunned Li Qiang and another bodyguard. They obviously didn't expect me to answer like that.
"You..." Li Qiang pointed at me and was speechless for a long time...
Captain Zhao sat behind his desk, drinking tea leisurely, as if he didn't see me come in. On the wall behind him hung a picture of a tiger descending from a mountain. The tiger's eyes were piercing, as if it was staring at me, which made me feel a sense of urgency.
The atmosphere in the room was solemn and depressing. The mocking voices of Li Qiang and the other bodyguard came to an abrupt end. They all looked at me with a hint of surprise and dissatisfaction in their eyes.
"Feng Ziang," Captain Zhao finally spoke, his voice low and hoarse, "How do you feel about your first day of patrol?"
"Not bad." I answered, trying to remain calm.
"Are you okay?" Captain Zhao sneered. "You look pale and wet, and you look like you're about to collapse from exhaustion."
"It's just a little rain." I said calmly, "It's no big deal."
"It rained a little?" Captain Zhao raised his voice. "Do you know how heavy the rain was today? How strong the wind was? Do you think patrolling is a joke?"
"I know my duty." I met his gaze without flinching. "I will do everything in my power to keep the estate safe."
Captain Zhao stared at me for a long time, with a hint of admiration in his eyes, but he quickly concealed it. "Hmph, I hope you keep your word." He waved his hand, "It's okay, you can go back and rest."
I turned around and left the office. I heard Li Qiang muttering in a low voice behind me: "Why are you pretending? You are just a poor young master..."
I ignored him and walked straight out of the main building. It was still raining outside and the wind was getting stronger. The rain was like ice needles piercing my face, making it almost impossible for me to open my eyes.
I took a deep breath, wrapped my wet clothes tightly, and continued my patrol. Tonight's patrol route is the west side of the manor, where the terrain is complex and the trees are dense, and few people usually pass by.
The rain blurred my vision, and the howling wind made it even harder for me to tell the direction. I held the flashlight tightly in my hand and walked forward step by step, taking every step very carefully.
The cold and fatigue continued to attack my body. My clothes were soaked through, and the cold rain flowed down my hair, making me feel cold all over. My legs also began to go numb, and every step I took felt as heavy as if they were filled with lead.
But I couldn't stop, I had to hold on. I told myself that this was only temporary, I would definitely find a way out and stand up again.
I continued patrolling along the planned route, when suddenly I noticed a dark shadow flashing by under a big tree not far away.
My heart tensed and I immediately became alert. I slowed down my pace and walked in that direction.
"Who's there?" I whispered, pointing the flashlight in that direction.
No response.
I held the flashlight tightly and slowly approached the tree. The grass under the tree was a bit messy, as if someone had stayed there.
I squatted down and carefully checked the surrounding environment, and found some tiny traces, as if someone had dug something here.
I felt a little uneasy. What on earth was going on? Could someone have really sneaked into the manor?
I decided to take a closer look... "It looks like tonight's patrol won't be easy..." I whispered to myself.
I squatted down and carefully observed the soil washed by the rain with the weak light of the flashlight. Although it was raining heavily, I could still see some traces of being turned over. The color of the soil was slightly darker than the surrounding area, and there were some fine grass fragments scattered around, as if someone had hurriedly buried something.
The feeling of uneasiness became stronger and stronger. These were definitely not traces left by small animals. I reached out and touched the soil. There was still a hint of dampness and stickiness. It didn't feel like pure rain water, but more like the residue left after being soaked in some liquid. I sniffed it closely, and a faint, indescribable fishy smell entered my nose, making me feel a little uncomfortable.
I looked around. The west wall was not far away. There was a dense bush there, which blocked most of my view. I stood up and walked towards the wall carefully, trying not to make any sound with each step. The sound of wind and rain was so loud that it covered up other subtle movements and made me even more nervous.
I walked to the wall and shone my flashlight carefully through the bushes, hoping to find some clues. Suddenly, I found a gap at the bottom of the bushes, as if something had knocked it open. I pushed aside the bushes and saw that a brick at the bottom of the wall was loose, and the surrounding soil also had obvious signs of being turned over, which was very similar to the marks under the tree before.
Could it be that... someone sneaked into the manor from here? This thought shocked me. The security system of the Shen Family Manor has always been strict, with high walls and infrared alarm devices. It is impossible for ordinary people to break in easily. If someone can avoid all surveillance and alarms and sneak in from here, then the other party's purpose must be not simple.
My heartbeat began to speed up, and an inexplicable sense of crisis enveloped me. This was not just a simple security loophole, but more like a carefully planned conspiracy. I had to find out the truth and the purpose of the intruder as soon as possible to protect the Shen family and myself.
The rain was getting heavier and the wind was getting stronger. My clothes were soaked through, and the cold rain flowed down my neck into my clothes, making me shiver. I tightened the flashlight in my hand, took a deep breath, and decided to continue patrolling along the wall to see if there were any other abnormalities.
After walking a distance, I found another similar trace, the bushes were damaged, there were loose bricks at the bottom of the wall, and the soil had been turned over. This further confirmed my guess that someone was systematically destroying the security system of the manor, and in more than one place.
I looked up at the gloomy sky. The rain blurred my vision and made me feel weak. Tonight's patrol was much more complicated than I had imagined.
I continued walking forward, and suddenly, I heard a slight metallic friction sound, like... something being dragged on the ground. I immediately stopped, held my breath, and listened carefully. The sound was very faint, intermittent, and almost completely covered by the sound of wind and rain. If I hadn't been particularly alert, I probably wouldn't have heard it at all.
