The words hung heavy in the air. I knew exactly what offer he was referring to. Zhang had approached me earlier and offered to "ensure my success" in the selection process in exchange for a large sum of money. Even if I was willing to sacrifice my integrity, I couldn't afford the money. Of course I refused.
"Yes, I refused," I answered, my voice steady even though I was shaking slightly with anxiety.
He leaned back against the desk, his arms crossed, his expression unreadable. "Why?"
The question was simple, yet contained so much meaning. I hesitated, unsure how to answer it. Was it a test? Was he trying to gauge my honesty? My loyalty?
"I believe in earning what you have," I said, looking him straight in the eye. "I came here to prove my ability, not to bribe my way in."
A flash of something—amusement? approval?—passed across his face. He stood up from his desk and began to pace the room, his movements slow and deliberate. The silence returned, heavier this time, filled with unspoken words. He stopped pacing and turned to face me, his expression serious.
"There will be more tests," he said, his voice low and serious. He moved closer, his eyes locked with mine. "Are you ready?"
I swallowed, my throat suddenly dry. I had no idea what lay ahead, what further tests he had in store for me. But one thing was certain: I would not back down. I had come so far, and sacrificed so much, that I could not give up now.
"I'm ready," I said firmly.
He stared at me for a long time, his eyes searching my own, and then a faint smile formed on his lips. He turned and walked toward the door, pausing at the threshold.
"Good," he said, his voice almost inaudible. "Let's get started, then." He gestured toward the hallway. "This way."
I followed him, my heart pounding in my chest, a feeling of unease hanging over me. The hallway was long and dim, the silence broken only by the sound of our footsteps. There was a heavy sense of expectation in the air, carrying the weight of something... something I couldn't quite define. I glanced back at the study door, now closed behind us. A single thought echoed through my mind: What now?
