"But did you eat something bad?"
"Perhaps it's just the beginning of autumn and the temperature has dropped sharply, so Concubine Su has caught a cold and is experiencing stomach discomfort."
The concubines were talking and guessing.
Su Wanti finally recovered, she took a deep breath and said:
"Maybe it's the changing seasons. I'll just go back and drink some warm water and get some rest."
Finally, the nanny beside the queen secretly said to the queen:
"Your Majesty, would you like me to call the imperial physician to take Concubine Su's pulse now?"
The Queen frowned and whispered:
"Concubine Su is just vomiting. Let her go back to the palace to rest, and then send the imperial physician to her palace to see her and prescribe medicine. There is no need to ask the imperial physician to come here."
Seeing that the queen was not understanding, the nanny explained it more clearly.
"Empress, have you forgotten what the abbot said when you last visited the Royal Temple?"
Hearing this, the queen was startled and clenched her fingers. She looked up at the nanny with a gleam in her eyes.
"Mammy, are you saying that Concubine Su might be pregnant?"
At this moment, her ears seemed to block out all the noisy sounds, and she could only hear her own heartbeat.
Mammy nodded at her and gently stroked her back to calm her down.
Seeing that the Queen's expression had softened, the nanny said:
"Don't get excited, Your Majesty. This is just speculation. Your Majesty, you may not know that women may experience nausea and vomiting in early pregnancy, but vomiting does not necessarily mean that she is pregnant."
"Let's call the imperial physician over to check Concubine Su's pulse right now. If it's not, forget it. But if it is, wouldn't that be a great joy?"
The nanny had been with the queen for several years and naturally knew what she was thinking. What the queen hoped for most was that one of the concubines in the harem would be pregnant with an heir and give birth to a son successfully, so that he could have children for the emperor and pass on his bloodline.
"Quick, go and get the imperial physician. Madam, go in person and get an imperial physician who specializes in women's medicine and has superb medical skills."
The nanny took the order and went to call the imperial physician.
The queen hurriedly asked the palace maid to bring Su Wanti warm water to rinse her mouth, and also asked the palace maid to add two cushions for her to lean on the back of the chair.
She looked caring and comforted him softly:
"Princess Su, please rest here for a while. I have already sent for the imperial physician."
Su Wanti drank the warm water, which soothed her stomach, which was cramping slightly from vomiting. She chuckled and said, "Thank you, Queen, for your concern."
"You are so pretentious. If you feel unwell, just go back to the palace and rest. Why do you get sick at the banquet?" The imperial concubine said with a look of disdain and a pout.
The queen's heart and eyes were all on Su Wanti, and she had no time to pay attention to the imperial concubine.
In less than an incense stick of time, the nanny came back with two imperial doctors.
"Why did you invite two imperial doctors for just a minor stomach discomfort? Isn't Concubine Su too pampered?" The concubine was very dissatisfied.
If it were usual, the Queen would have said a few words to the Imperial Concubine, but today, the Queen had no intention of paying any attention to her at all.
She only said to the imperial physician:
"Imperial Physician, Concubine Su is feeling unwell and has been retching non-stop. Please take her pulse and find out the cause."
After hearing the Queen's instructions, a younger imperial physician hurried to Su Wanti and took her pulse.
This imperial physician has been in the palace for five or six years, and has never diagnosed a pregnant woman since then.
He also knew that in the more than ten years since the emperor ascended the throne, none of the concubines in the harem had ever been pregnant.
Therefore, when he found that Concubine Su's pulse was smooth and round, like beads rolling on a jade plate, as if she was pregnant, he did not believe it at first and thought he had made a wrong diagnosis.
Then he examined it carefully for a while before confirming it in his mind.
However, he didn't want to reveal his diagnosis first.
Although he believed in his medical skills, he was still worried that his judgment was wrong, so after he stood up, he took a step back and asked another imperial physician to come forward for diagnosis.
When the second imperial physician saw that he said nothing, his heart sank, thinking that perhaps Concubine Su had some incurable disease or an unspeakable illness.
When his fingers rested on Concubine Su's wrist, he finally understood why the imperial physician before him had remained silent after his diagnosis.
This imperial physician had a longer experience in the Imperial Medical Bureau, a full twenty years.
He knew the situation in the palace very well, so when he diagnosed the pulse of pregnancy, he was also in disbelief.
Re-diagnosis, still the same!
The imperial physician raised his eyes and looked at his colleague, who was also looking at him.
The moment the two looked at each other, it seemed as if they understood each other's eyes.
These two imperial physicians have never been so in sync with each other as they are now.
The two imperial physicians stood up and said, "Congratulations to the Empress and the Imperial Concubine!"
Upon hearing this, the queen understood, and a look of joy crept up her eyebrows and eyes in an instant.
Su Wanti pretended not to understand, with a puzzled look on her face, and said:
"Please explain clearly, Imperial Physician. What are you congratulating me for? I'm feeling unwell and nauseous and vomiting all the time. What is there to congratulate me for?"
The imperial physician's face was full of smiles as he said respectfully, "Congratulations, Noble Concubine, you are nearly two months pregnant."
"What?"
Su Wanti widened her eyes, as if she totally didn't believe it.
All the concubines except the queen were also surprised.
The imperial concubine was so anxious that her face turned red. She couldn't control her expression, the corners of her eyes couldn't help twitching, and her voice became sharp.
"She's pregnant? How is that possible? Two imperial doctors, you made the right diagnosis, didn't you? How is that possible? Should we invite a few more imperial doctors to come and take a look?"
The two imperial physicians were questioned about their medical skills by the imperial concubine, but they did not dare to offend her, so they just lowered their heads in silence and stood by.
The Queen said displeasedly, "Noble Concubine, please be mindful of your words and actions. You are the head of the Four Concubines after all. Don't break the rules!"
