My lord, I can't marry you. (16)

Upon hearing his words, Wan Ge's eyes immediately welled up with tears.

She knew everything. Although she rarely went out, she was basically clear about the relationships between various families and clans.

She knew all too well that the Duke's mansion meant nothing to Jiang Jin.

Jiang Jin is currently favored by the emperor, commands the three armies, and has the crown prince as his elder brother. Before following his maternal grandfather on the expedition, he was raised by the eldest princess.

Whether it was the emperor, the crown prince, or the eldest princess, they all doted on him. His maternal family had been famous generals for generations, and the rewards and praise that the general's mansion received must have far exceeded those of the general's mansion.

Given Jiang Jin's status, she, the eldest daughter of the Duke's mansion, was truly no match for him.

If it weren't for him, he wouldn't have needed to discuss this behind closed doors today. He would have had the authority to deal with the Duke's mansion if he were dealing with the Emperor, the Crown Prince, or the Eldest Princess—or rather, for himself.

The downfall of the Duke's mansion could be accomplished in an instant.

Wan Ge's eyes were red because she was not loved by her parents, and although her grandmother was kind to her, she was also very strict.

It seemed like the first time someone had so blatantly shown favoritism to her.

Wan Ge knew that one should never rely on others; this was a saying his grandmother had told him.

My grandfather was exceptionally good to my grandmother, and he loved only her his entire life. But my grandmother still said this to him: "Not everyone will be like your grandfather."

In this world, there are many men who can love many women in their lifetime, and they might even sacrifice you for their own interests. A family might also collapse because of certain events, so your greatest reliance is actually yourself.

In that instant, Wan Ge was willing to believe that Jiang Jin was the same kind of person as her grandfather: "Can I rely on Your Highness forever?"

“Of course you can.” Jiang Jin said without hesitation, “You can try to trust me and rely on me. I won’t let you down.”

Jiang Jin was thrilled to hear her words; he understood that Wan Ge wanted to accept him. No, she had already accepted him. He wanted to reach out and pull her into his arms, but then realized it was inappropriate, so in the end he only reached out and patted her head.

"Wait patiently for me to come and marry you."

Wan Ge blushed and nodded.

Jiang Jin stepped out of the Duke's mansion in a particularly good mood. Remembering what happened the day before yesterday, he ordered his men to send several guards to accompany Wan Ge and protect her.

He felt that one bodyguard was not enough, as could be seen from the last incident.

When Wan Ge returned to the hall, her grandmother was furious.

The old lady had already rushed back when the middle-aged man started speaking, and stood outside the hall listening to the whole thing. She was so angry that her hands were trembling.

She had just arrived at the temple and was about to pray for blessings when she heard the news that her son had sent Wan Ge away.

Just as she was about to head home, halfway there, she heard rumors circulating in the city. She immediately sensed something was wrong, and it wasn't until she got home and overheard the conversations that she realized what was going on.

"You're all so foolish! So incredibly foolish! Is this the daughter you've raised so well?" The old lady struck her eldest son directly with her cane.

They sent Wan Ge to their side simply because they wanted their legitimate daughter to bring them glory. And now what have they done? What have they done!

The young duke knelt before the old lady: "What should we do now, according to Mother's opinion?"
