But... looking at his retreating figure, Wan Ge thought about what he had just said—a lie. He clearly didn't care about her life or death at all when he was talking to Grandpa last night.
Thinking about what was said last night, Wan Ge still felt scared and a chill ran down her spine.
Grandpa Xu understood their decision to leave, simply telling Wan Ge to come again next time. He also gave her a bracelet.
Wan Ge didn't want to accept it, but in the end Xu Yan took her hand and put it on her: "Just take it since it's from Grandpa."
Wan Ge couldn't refuse and eventually took it with her, but she took it off when she got home and put it in the cabinet.
…
For the next week, Wan Ge was uneasy because of that conversation.
She couldn't believe Xu Yan would hurt her, but she had overheard the conversation herself.
Wan Ge wanted to get to the bottom of things, but her investigation yielded nothing. If she went directly to Xu Yan, he might not tell her anything at all; if it really concerned her life or death, he would never say a word.
Xu Yan also clearly sensed that something was wrong with Wan Ge. He asked her several times, but she looked at him with a complicated expression and ultimately said nothing.
…
"Honey, when would you like to ask Mom and Dad for their advice on our wedding?" Xu Yan asked softly, noticing that Wan Ge was lost in thought again.
When Wan Ge heard his words, she snapped out of her daze, took a deep breath, and said, "Xu Yan, I don't think we're a good match. Let's break up."
Living in constant speculation, coupled with work pressure, made Wan Ge feel truly miserable. She knew that once suspicion arose, regardless of whether she asked questions or not, once a rift appeared, the relationship would inevitably end sooner or later.
So in the end, Wan Ge still said this.
"What did you say!" Xu Yan, who was peeling an orange for her, dropped the orange on the ground and immediately stood up!
"I said let's break up. I'm sorry!"
Xu Yan's face turned deathly pale. His hands, hanging limply at his sides, clenched tightly. His mind was a complete mess, but he finally managed to find a sliver of reason: "Why? Can I know the real reason?"
"I told you that I felt we were incompatible."
"Nonsense! What's wrong with us? We've always been fine. What's the problem? We're about to get married." Xu Yan's eyes reddened slightly, and he held her hands tightly.
Wan Ge pulled her hand back and said again, "I'm sorry."
"I don't want your apologies."
Wan Ge lowered her head and did not reply.
Xu Yan saw her resolute attitude: "If you think I've done something wrong, you can tell me. I'll change whatever I'm doing wrong. Let's not break up, okay?"
Wan Ge gently shook her head again.
Xu Yan took a deep breath: "Is there something you're having that you don't want to tell me?"
Wan Ge spoke again: "I'm not having any difficulties, I'm not sick, I just feel like I don't want to be with you anymore."
Wan Ge's tone was extremely firm, as if she absolutely had to part ways with him.
"I disagree! You want to break up with me? Don't even think about it." Xu Yan said, then turned and left. Before closing the door, he left with the words, "Let's both calm down first."
The moment the door closed, he disappeared from Wan Ge's sight.
