After returning home, Song Jun remained silent. Song Xia called out to him earnestly, "Jun, it's not that I don't care about you, but you and Xiao Jiao should learn to grow up. Dad is gone, and we no longer have the right to be willful. If you don't learn to do something now, I'll only be busier when I go to university next year."
Song Jiao lowered her head unhappily: "Sister, once you get into university next year, are you going to abandon us?"
"It's not that we don't care about you, it's just that no matter which university it is, it's not very close to our home, so the time we come back each day may be unpredictable."
"Then why can't you not go to university?" Song Jiao blurted out, then immediately realized her mistake and apologized, "Sister, I'm sorry, I'm just scared, I don't want to leave you."
Song Xia's heart turned cold: "I didn't say I was leaving. No matter which university you go to, you will still come back every day. It's just that the courses in university are not as regular as in high school, so when I'm not around, you will have to learn to take care of yourselves."
"I...I'm scared. Xiaojun and I are still young. What if something happens to us when you're not here?"
Song Xia looked directly at her: "Then what do you want your sister to do? Stop going to school and stay home to serve you, Song Jun?"
"Sister, that's not what I meant. I'm just really scared."
"If you're scared, you can board at school in junior high."
"Sister, do you really want to get rid of us? You're the only one we can rely on now."
"When did I say I wanted to get rid of you?" Song Xia said seriously. "Then you should come up with a reasonable solution for your sister."
Song Jiao hesitated for a moment, then whispered, "Then, sister, after you graduate from high school next year, could you postpone going to university? I've heard that some people work before they go to university."
Song Xia laughed for real. Song Jiao's scheming was really clever, and she had such thoughts at such a young age. She asked in return, "How about this, if you're scared, you can delay starting junior high school. I'll rent a house for you near the university where I go to college, so I can see you anytime. Or you can come with me to the university classrooms to attend classes, which is less dangerous."
"That won't do. Everyone else is in school, how can I..."
Song Xia said calmly, "Song Jiao, you know this isn't good. Even in families where both parents are alive, it's impossible to guarantee that you won't work overtime and will come home on time every night. I've already decided not to go to university in another province and promise to come home every day. Do you still want your sister to drop out of school to take care of you and Xiao Jun at home? Can you guarantee that after your sister sacrifices her future, you'll give half of every penny you earn when you grow up to your sister?"
Song Jiao didn't dare to look Song Xia in the eye, and lowered her head guiltily: "Sister, I'm just scared. Sister, you can have anything you want."
"Xiao Jun is still at home. We'll get you a cell phone later. What's there to be afraid of?"
"I...I don't know, I'm just scared." Song Jiao was almost crying, it was hard to tell if it was because she felt guilty or because she was pretending.
"Perhaps this is possible. Some junior high schools have evening self-study sessions. You can go back after the self-study session. By then, I should be home no matter what."
Song Jiao sobbed, "I'll do whatever you say, as long as it's convenient for you, I don't care."
At this point, Song Xia really didn't know what to say if she said it didn't matter. Oh well, she only planned to raise Song Jiao and Song Jun anyway. After they grew up, they probably wouldn't have much interaction because of their different personalities and beliefs. Let her think what she wants.
She glanced at Song Jun again, who still had a sour face. Although the two siblings were twins and both were ungrateful, their selfish personalities were still somewhat different.
Song Jun is the kind of person who is straightforward and only thinks of himself, while Song Jiao prefers to be indirect and not only wants to gain an advantage but also wants a good reputation.
"Go to bed, you're all grown up. Don't do such foolish things again."
Song Xiazhen felt exhausted. They were only twelve years old. She hoped to correct their inner thoughts and make them realize that no one should give to them for free. Apart from the inheritance left by their father, if they wanted to get something, they had to exchange it. They could use equivalent material things or emotional value, instead of making a direct demand with a sense of entitlement.
After taking a shower, she calmed down and started reviewing. She had an exam tomorrow, so she wanted to memorize as many formulas as possible.
She cooked a bowl of dumplings for herself in the morning. Song Jun and Song Jiao were both silent. Song Jun had a sour face, and Song Jiao seemed to want to say something, but in the end she didn't.
"Don't overthink it. I will always be your older sister. At least until you come of age, I will never treat you worse than outsiders. Study hard, get good grades, and get into a good university. That's better than anything else. Then you will be able to take control of your own lives."
Upon hearing this, Song Jun and Song Jiao glanced at her in surprise, then went back to eating their dumplings in silence, seemingly dispelling the awkward atmosphere between them.
Song Xia rushed to school. She missed the evening self-study session, and naturally, she also missed the morning self-study session. Just as she sat down, the class bell rang, and the teacher came in with the test papers. Her deskmate sighed helplessly for her.
Everyone knows how stressful senior year of high school is, but Song Xia is unfortunately unable to concentrate on her studies. I really don't know if she can keep up with her studies if things continue like this.
The day's exams passed quickly. English was relatively easy for Song Xia, but the other two subjects were more difficult, mainly because there were too many knowledge points, and she hadn't reviewed much of them.
After the exam, before the homeroom teacher could say anything to her, Song Jun and Song Jiao's school teachers called.
"Teacher Liu, what happened?"
"Sister Song Jun, don't worry, it's nothing serious. It's just that Song Jun hit someone today. You should be out of school by now, right? Can you come over?"
Song Xia hurriedly packed her schoolbag: "I'll be right there."
Her classmates shook their heads as they watched her walk away: "If she keeps going like this, how will her grades improve?"
"But there's nothing we can do about it."
"How unlucky to encounter something like this in the most crucial year."
Song Xia was unaware of her classmates' worries. She rode her bicycle as fast as she could to Song Jun and Song Jiao's school.
In the office, Song Jun and Song Jiao stood on one side, while on the other side stood two other boys and their parents. The two boys had bruises on their faces, and the two parents were furious. The homeroom teacher, Ms. Liu, stood in the middle, looking troubled.
"Xiao Jun, are you alright?" Song Xia looked at Song Jun first. Having been through the same student days, and especially knowing the upheaval her family had experienced, she roughly knew why the fight had happened. That's why she immediately showed concern for Song Jun. However, her actions angered the parents of the two students.
