"Weiden, what did you bring?"
"Try the food my mom made." Wei Deng opened the box, which contained meat pies, crispy pork, lotus root cakes, chive cakes, braised pork, crispy small fish, and other dishes made by Song Xia. He divided half of the food into a nice lunchbox and prepared to give it to Mo Ru and her roommates to try. He decided to give the rest to his roommates as his mother had instructed.
Indeed, from the end of last semester to the start of this semester, his relationship with his roommates was just so-so. He always felt like everyone was avoiding him. His mother made so much food that he couldn't finish it all. Rather than let it go bad, he thought he might as well share it with them. If his mother hadn't made so much, he wouldn't have let them have it.
"It smells so good!" My roommate in the next bed grabbed a lotus root sandwich and her eyes widened instantly. "Mmm! Delicious! You guys have to try it!"
"Really?" The other two people came over, one took the crispy fried fish and the other took the chive pancake, and then their praise never stopped.
"Holy crap, how can it taste so good!"
"This is absolutely amazing! These crispy little fish are so crispy and fragrant."
"I swear this is the best chive pancake I've ever eaten!"
"Weiden, is this really your mother's cooking?"
"If it wasn't my mom who made it, who did? Have you ever eaten anything this delicious outside?" Wei Deng said smugly, feeling that he had regained some face.
"No, no, Mom's cooking is amazing."
"Wow, this is so delicious it brings tears to my eyes. How can something be so good? I have to try a piece of braised pork. The flavor is just too tempting."
"Wei Deng, just for this taste today, you're my dad!"
The three of them ate while complimenting Wei Deng, their tone and attitude intimate, clearly much more sincere than their perfunctory attitude last semester. Friendships between people are sometimes that strange; they can instantly shorten the distance between them.
Wei Deng's smile widened considerably. He instantly agreed with his mother's statement, thinking that it wouldn't be a waste to give all the delicious food to his roommates.
"You guys eat first, I'll go deliver some to Mo Ru's dorm."
“It’s too oily for girls to eat this so late at night. I have a box of coconut water here, consider it a donation from me.”
"I have some oranges I just bought here, they can help cut through the richness."
"Come on, I'll take it all with me."
Previously, the three roommates would have ignored such things, but after eating the delicious food that Wei Deng brought back today, they all contributed what they had and what they could do.
Wei Deng used to feel that there was some distance between him and his other three roommates. Although it wasn't a big problem, sometimes he felt like he was excluded from another world. They were mostly just polite to him.
But today, it seems like the distance between us has suddenly narrowed, and there's something more genuine in everyone's smiles towards him. Is this the charm of food?
Actually, people didn't have any ill feelings towards Weiden before, but they couldn't stand his boasting. Judging from his daily behavior, he was not from a wealthy family, but he insisted on showing off how rich he was all the time, as if he had nothing to show off.
So every time he pretended to be generous and said he would treat everyone, everyone would tease him and tell him to just swallow his pride and suffer in silence.
However, when he repeatedly refused to participate in activities together, everyone guessed that his family might not be able to give him that much money anymore, so they gave up on teasing him and just treated him like an ordinary roommate.
I never expected him to bring such delicious food to everyone today! Whether it was his family's idea or not, the usual distance between us vanished because of the food. After all, Wei Deng isn't a really bad person. In modern times, who doesn't have some flaws? It's normal for young people to care about their image; don't they often pretend to be?
At least Weiden is now willing to improve relations with them. Whether it's because of his past generosity in treating others to meals or the delicious food he's made with his family now, they shouldn't target him anymore.
"Weiden, you are so lucky to have a mother with such a great skill."
"If I were Mo Ru, as long as I could eat these delicious foods regularly, I would be completely devoted to you."
Wei Deng was very happy today, but not as smug as before: "If you like them, I'll bring them back for you next time I go to my mom's."
His roommate put his arm around his shoulder and said, "Good buddy, next time you go back, please thank your mom for us."
Weiden kept smiling, and suddenly felt that this atmosphere was even better than when he treated people to dinner before. He liked the feeling that everyone was revolving around him.
Mo Ru received Wei Deng's call, dressed up a little, and went downstairs. She was slightly surprised to see his two roommates, but quickly regained her composure and asked with a shy smile, "Is there something you need?"
"I brought you and your roommate some food, all made by my mom."
"Auntie made it! Does Auntie... know about our relationship?" Mo Ru was actually a little nervous. What if Wei Deng's mother came to the school?
"I know, but my mom is very busy. I'll take you to see her next time I have the chance."
Hearing Wei Deng say that, Mo Ru breathed a sigh of relief. She didn't want to meet Wei Deng's parents now; she had no intention of marrying him in the future.
"And these coconut water and oranges are what my roommates sponsored for you to help you cut through the richness."
Mo Ru was more enthusiastic about coconut water and oranges, since they were both delicious and easy to share. Who knew how good Wei Deng's mother's cooking skills were? After making them, she packed them in boxes and brought them over by car. Wouldn't they change color and taste after such a long time?
However, she couldn't show any disgust in front of Wei Deng, so she happily accepted them, saying, "You can leave these here, I'll have my roommates come down and pick them up."
When Mo Ru's roommate came down, Wei Deng's roommate said, "You guys are in for a treat. We just tried it, and Wei Deng's mom's cooking is especially delicious."
Mo Ru chuckled, but inwardly she was unconvinced. How good could homemade food be? It was a waste that Wei Deng had gone to such lengths to send it over; she might as well have treated her roommates to a meal at a restaurant.
After getting the food to the dormitory, she and her roommates didn't rush to open the lunchboxes. Instead, they shared the coconut water and oranges, until Wei Deng returned to the dormitory and asked her how it tasted.
“It’s delicious,” Mo Ru said while peeling an orange. “It just might not suit their tastes. I can’t finish it all by myself.”
Wei Deng frowned slightly as he looked at the message, thinking to himself that Mo Ru's roommate had such a picky palate, complaining that such delicious food was not tasty?
He paused for a moment and replied, "Then next time I'll only bring some for you."
Mo Ru pouted. Did Wei Deng plan to use his mother's cooking instead of taking her to restaurants? You know, she agreed to Wei Deng's invitation because he had money from his winter break job and could take her to high-end buffets.
However, it wouldn't be good if Mo Ru couldn't answer what she ate when Wei Deng asked her later, so she opened the lunchbox to see what was inside.
