Before answering his question, Xu Keke said to the woman, "Give them the money first. Didn't you just tell them that you would give them the rest of the money as soon as the police came?"
"Yes, give us the money first. The police are here now."
"Yes, give me the money, five yuan!"
The young policeman took a half step back, crossed his arms, and asked the woman, "Why don't you tell them what kind of money they want from you?"
"I was afraid they would run away, so I gave each of them five yuan to stop them for me." The woman spoke hesitantly, not knowing why, but she just felt a little guilty.
"Hiring people to restrict someone's freedom of movement. That's the kind of behavior you see in the old society, right?" Xu Keke chimed in sarcastically.
The older policeman glanced at Xu Keke. The young girl was quite sharp; she'd made a judgment with just one sentence. But that sentence didn't prove she hadn't hit anyone. "Alright, stop talking about her. Why did you hit someone?"
Xu Keke pointed to him and said, "He's my dad. Today I was buying coal, and he insisted that his name was on the coal certificate. He blocked us from leaving and even tried to hit me, so I kicked him."
Xu Keke muttered to herself, "How much pain could it possibly be? He's been faking it until now."
The police didn't understand. The drivers standing around, trying to pick up passengers, also didn't understand; judging from their behavior, the two didn't seem like father and daughter at all.
Qi Chang waved to the two policemen. They approached, and Qi Chang smoothed his hair and briefly explained the Meng family's situation. He specifically mentioned that Meng Zikang had previously abused Chen Yurong, and that Chen Yurong, unable to endure it any longer, had hanged herself the night before last.
Upon hearing this, the police officers' gaze towards Xu Keke changed. Both of them felt that if she kicked him, so be it. A man like that shouldn't have been kicked too lightly.
The one who delivered the message was quick-witted; he was standing close to where they were talking. Qi Chang didn't try to keep his voice down either; he heard everything clearly.
She turned and darted into the group, muttering something under her breath. Seeing the situation was turning against her, the woman quickly took out some money from her pocket and distributed it to a few people. Unfortunately, it was too late; these people didn't even give her a friendly look after receiving the money.
After the woman finished dividing the money, the young policeman walked up to her. "What's your name, He Meng...?"
The young policeman glanced at Qi Chang.
"Meng Zikang!"
"Yes, what is your relationship with Meng Zikang, who is this girl's father?"
The woman frowned; she disliked the policeman's attitude. "My name is Luo Wei, and my father is the deputy director of the Second Light Industry Bureau."
"Hmph!" the young policeman sneered. "I asked you what your relationship was with this Meng Zikang, not what your father did."
"I... I am friends with Meng Zikang."
Young policeman, "What brings you two here today?"
The woman named Luo Wei was furious. "Officer, I called the police. If you're not arresting them, why are you asking me all this time?"
"What's wrong? Just because you called the police first, does that mean we have to listen to you? What if we need to find out the truth and arrest the wrong person? Are you going to take responsibility?"
Luo Wei was so angry she was panting heavily. She refused to believe it; they were the ones who had been wronged, the victims.
“Officer, what’s there to investigate? Meng Zikang is my boyfriend. He came with me to buy coal. He saw his daughter in line, so he asked her to buy some for us. After they finished buying, they took the coal and left, and there was still some of our coal in it. Zikang went to stop them, and his daughter kicked him, leaving him unable to get up. If you don’t believe me, ask them if I’m lying.”
She asked again, but none of the people around her agreed.
"His wife hanged herself the night before last, so how is he your boyfriend? What exactly is your relationship?"
Meng Zikang didn't tell Luo Wei about Chen Yurong's suicide attempt; Luo Wei had only just heard about it. "Hanged to death? How could this happen? He and his wife are going through divorce proceedings. We're just friends now, ordinary friends."
"Things changed pretty quickly; just a moment ago he was her boyfriend, and now he's just a friend." The young policeman chuckled softly. The older policeman glared at him.
"Alright, it's just a young girl kicking you, how much could it hurt? Whether he's your boyfriend or just a friend, take him home." The older policeman didn't want to waste any more time; in just a short while, a lot more people had gathered around. In this kind of domestic dispute, who could you arrest? In the end, it would just be mediation. He was trying to smooth things over and get everyone to disperse quickly.
He hadn't expected that while he wanted to disperse, someone else didn't. Meng Zikang leaned against a nearby tree and stood up.
"No! Even if they leave, they have to unload my coal."
The older policeman glanced at him. He looked at Xu Keke with a kind smile and a gentle tone, as if afraid of frightening her.
"Little girl, what's wrong with this coal?"
“This coal originally belonged to our family. He insists that his name is on it and that he wants to take his coal away.”
The older policeman took the coal ration book from Xu Keke's hand, looked at it, and then handed it back to her. Turning around, he pointed at Meng Zikang and said, "I'm not trying to criticize you, but you're a father too. You know how to help others buy coal, but why didn't you think about buying some for your own daughter? Now that the girl has asked the neighbors to help her buy the coal, you have the nerve to come over and shamelessly ask her for some. Do you think that's appropriate?"
"What's wrong with that? My name's on the coal certificate, so the coal is mine." Meng Zikang didn't care about any of that. He wasn't afraid of the police; he hadn't broken the law, so who would dare to bother him? They could arrest him anyway.
"This child is still yours, why don't you care?" The older policeman was a little angry, his brows furrowing into a deep frown.
Unfortunately, Meng Zikang couldn't see any of this and retorted, "This is our family matter, and it's none of anyone else's business."
