Principal Dou wasn't particularly enthusiastic towards Luo Wei to begin with. Having come from a military background, she believed that disagreements and arguments between comrades were inevitable.
She'd met Rosie before; she was arrogant. With her personality, she was definitely not one to suffer a loss. On the contrary, this kid in front of her wasn't as tall or strong as Rosie, and to let such a small, skinny kid hit her on the court—she'd be too embarrassed to even mention it to anyone.
It's already a miracle she wasn't removed from her position as team leader. And then her family came over to complain.
There's always a reason for hitting someone, so she had Xu Keke called over to ask why she hit her. But this brought up the child's private affairs. She had barely opened her mouth to ask, and before Xu Keke could answer, she was interrupted by a knock on the door.
"Report!"
Rosie pushed open the door and walked in from outside. "Good morning, Principal!"
Dou Yi didn't speak, but scrutinized Luo Xi with a critical look. No one had called her; she had come on her own.
Rosie stood ramrod straight, her clothes neat and clean. The fabric was clearly something you couldn't buy in a store. They were dazzlingly new, probably unwashed. The only difference between them and her sister's outfit was the color; the style was identical.
Dou Yi paused for a moment, then quickly regained her composure. She noticed that even the buttons on their clothes matched the colors of their outfits.
Dou Yi then turned her gaze to Xu Keke, who was standing in front of Luo Xi. The reason she noticed the two sisters' clothing was because as soon as the girl stood in front of her, she noticed that the girl's sleeves were much too short, about half a hand's width, and had been patched up with other fabric. Her trouser legs exposed her ankles, and the edges were already frayed. And her white shoes were so tight that her toes were touching the ground; it was uncomfortable to look at, let alone for her to wear them. Those shoes must be so constricting.
Even so, standing in front of Rosie, she still didn't lose to her. Rosie's chin was slightly raised, her eyes stubborn and aloof, radiating an indomitable spirit. But this little girl remained calm and composed; from her seemingly irrelevant answers, it was clear this child was shrewd. Rosie couldn't possibly outmaneuver the two of them.
Dou Yi's gaze was so oppressive that Xu Keke felt, for a moment, that he had seen right through her. She even felt more guilty than ever before. Her little tricks were utterly insignificant in front of this man, just some low-class schemes.
"Meng Dong, what's your relationship with this woman, and what's the story with your mother?" Dou Yi asked again after scrutinizing the two of them. Before asking the question, she gave Teacher Liu a sharp look, stopping him from speaking.
Dou Yi only occasionally made demands regarding the school team's work. She never interfered with the teaching arrangements; almost all the teachers did as they pleased. She simply observed. Yet, all the teachers in the school were afraid of her. No one dared to lie to her just because she was illiterate.
She stood outside the classroom, and when they saw her, even though they knew she probably wouldn't understand, they still felt nervous.
Xu Keke saw Dou Yi glance at Teacher Liu, and the other two saw it too. Even though that glance wasn't directed at them, everyone involuntarily tensed up.
“Life at home is too hard, so my mom brought us from our hometown to find my dad. My mom doesn’t have a job in the city, so she supports us by doing odd jobs. But everything in the city costs money, and the school charges for textbooks. She can only afford to pay for one child’s tuition. She’s borrowed from everyone she knows, and she can’t bring herself to ask. She told me to ask my dad, but he said he has no feelings for my mom anymore, and he won’t give her a single penny unless she agrees to a divorce.”
Xu Keke sneered, "No feelings. They've been married for almost twenty years. Besides my sister and me, there was a boy in between, but we didn't keep him. Later, he went home to visit his family, and he got pregnant with my sister. No feelings, he didn't say that a few years ago, he didn't say that before the marriage. My mother is almost forty, she's almost given her whole life to him, taking care of the elderly at home until they passed away, and he says there are no feelings left."
My mother is uneducated, a rural woman. If I hadn't married her, and had instead married an honest, simple country man, life wouldn't be any harder than it is now. Maybe we'd be a happy family now.
"To get a divorce, he beat my mother. He beat her so badly that she was covered in bruises and couldn't get out of bed for days. My mother didn't want a divorce, not because she wanted to be beaten, nor because she still thought this man was good. She was afraid that others would look down on my sister and me. She thought that it would be better to have no mother than to have a divorced mother. She thought that if she died, my father would take care of us. That night, while my sister and I were asleep, she hanged herself in the room."
My mother died, I have a younger sister, and I still need to go to school. Life has to go on. I went to buy coal and happened to run into my father buying coal for Rosie's sister. My father said I should buy coal for him too. I didn't agree; my mother had just died. I wasn't that kind of person. I got into a fight with my father.
Rosie's sister called the police, and Rosie herself admitted to the officers that she and my dad had been living together. In the end, the police arrested them both.
Xu Keke kept calling Luo Xi her sister, which initially surprised Luo Xi, but later filled her with shame. She didn't know, she truly didn't know. That day, when she got home, her sister was also home. Her father was furious, demanding that her sister break up with Meng Zikang. He said, "What kind of person is your sister, getting involved with someone like that without any real connection?" He added that her sister's previous divorce had already made him lose face at work. Now, she'd gone to the police station, making everyone around them aware of her affair with Meng Zikang. Her father said that her sister had completely disgraced him.
She disagreed with her father's idea at the time, believing that her sister's happiness was more important than saving face.
Then her sister explained for a long time, with the name Meng Dong appearing frequently. She'd heard her mother died; the country woman was uneducated, and she'd driven herself to suicide by crying, making a scene, and even threatening suicide. Who could she blame? If two people aren't compatible, they should break up as soon as possible. No one should waste the other's time. She thought her sister was right.
