Summer vacation doesn't mean you can stay home every day. The school also arranges labor classes, which are students from each class taking turns to work in the school-run factory for three consecutive days.
As luck would have it, Xu Keke's class was scheduled for the same day as Gao Jiale's class.
Rosie wasn't in a good mood, and Xu Ke noticed the unfriendly look in her eyes. She smiled, walked over, and called Rosie to the open space outside the workshop.
"What, is there something you want to tell me again?"
Luo Xi was puzzled by Xu Keke's attitude. She looked at Xu Keke with confusion, her reason telling her that Xu Keke couldn't possibly care about her. But she still couldn't help but say, "Your dad is so bad. How could he treat my sister like this? My sister is so good to him. They're about to get married, how could he be with another woman?"
The little girl's cheeks were slightly flushed with anger.
Her sister knew Meng Zikang had a wife and daughter, yet she still stayed with him. However, after discovering his betrayal, she still couldn't accept it. That's human nature; even when they haven't done anything particularly good themselves, they can't tolerate the slightest harm from others. That's what you call double standards.
“It’s possible that Meng Zikang was framed by someone else. Didn’t your sister think of that?”
"What do you mean by this?" Rosie looked at her in disbelief.
Xu Keke shrugged. "It means what you think: some people don't want to see them get married."
After saying what she wanted to say, Xu Keke left Luo Xi and returned to the workshop. Through the workshop's glass window, Xu Keke saw Luo Xi stand there dumbfounded for a moment before running out.
What did you say to her?
Xu Keke turned around, and Gao Jiale was standing next to her. He was also staring out the window. Xu Keke glanced at the male students beside him. Clearly, someone had seen her calling Luo Xi out.
Xu Keke always avoids unnecessary misunderstandings. She wouldn't act cool at a time like this. "She's been watching me ever since I arrived. I called her out for a talk. She's having trouble accepting that Meng Zikang is having an affair behind her sister's back."
Xu Keke herself felt that what she said was ambiguous. But she also didn't understand why this Rosie liked to interfere in her sister's love life so much.
"I explained to her that Meng Zikang might have been framed. She probably went to talk to her sister to ease her sister's distress."
"Why did you say that to her?" Gao Jiale looked at Xu Keke, puzzled. He and she were together that day, and everyone in their courtyard knew what had happened. Gao Jiale really didn't understand why Xu Keke would defend Meng Zikang.
"Do you want her sister to marry your father?"
"This kid's got brains now," Xu Keke raised an eyebrow. "People really do grow up."
Xu Keke didn't evade the question and answered directly, "Chen Meng did it on purpose. She didn't want Meng Zikang to get married, so she deliberately led Liu Jianguo to catch them in the act. As for Meng Zikang and Luo Wei, I really hope they can be together in this life. Otherwise, it's a bit of a pity."
The male student next to them, craning his neck to watch them, couldn't understand what they were saying; the names didn't sound like they were from the school. But he still blurted out, "What's there to regret?"
"You wouldn't understand even if I told you. You're still young. You'll understand when you're older." Xu Keke glanced at him sideways, her gaze sweeping over Gao Jiale. She was saying this to Gao Jiale as well. It wasn't that she was being deliberately mysterious; there were just some things she couldn't say.
The nurse Meng Zikang later married wasn't a bad person. They met in another city, and after they got married, she moved back to this city with Meng Zikang. Knowing that Meng Dong had a terminal illness, the nurse even brought her some money. From her evasive words and Meng Zikang's attitude towards the Meng sisters, it's clear that Xu Keke, unlike Meng Dong, felt no affection for Meng Zikang. Therefore, she knew very well that the money had nothing to do with Meng Zikang.
Kind-hearted women aren't suited to be with scumbags; they can't handle that kind of relationship. Just look at Rosie's resentment today—that tells you Luo Wei's attitude. That woman is assertive; she should have no problem dealing with Meng Zikang.
Gao Jiale actually wanted to ask what was so regrettable, but after hearing Xu Keke's reply, he kept quiet. He could sense that she always treated him like a child. Whenever Gao Lan chattered incessantly, or Gao Jiaqing jumped around and acted up, the way she looked at them was one of tolerance mixed with a hint of helplessness.
What made him uncomfortable was that she had given him that same look several times before.
Just in case, Xu Keke asked Manager Lin about Meng Zikang's current residence.
The next afternoon, while Qi Chang was at work at the factory, Xiao Mengjia went to the Gao family's house to play. She went there by herself.
Although it was a factory dormitory building, it felt more like a guesthouse. Rooms were lined up one after another. Manager Lin said Meng Zikang lived in room 307, and Xu Keke followed the number on the door to find it. The corridor wasn't a straight line; it was L-shaped. It turned a corner near the public restroom. Meng Zikang's room was at the very end of the corridor, next to the boiler room.
Xu Keke knocked on the door, but no one answered. The door opened by itself. She didn't go in. The room wasn't big; you could see it at a glance. It was square, simple, but very clean.
Near the window was a worn-out desk, and on the chair in front of it, a neatly folded stack of clothes lay. The blankets on the small single bed next to it were unmade, clearly indicating that the person had hurriedly gotten up and left.
It's good that the person hasn't left yet. Xu Keke stepped out and heard noises coming from the corridor. She instinctively hid in the boiler room, thankfully finding it empty.
The voices of Meng Zikang and Luo Wei could be heard outside. Luo Wei was quietly reminiscing about the events of the past few days, her tone clearly no longer angry. The two quickly entered the house, and soon after, indescribable, inappropriate sounds began to emanate from within.
