Xu Keke really didn't expect that Du Bingtian actually hoped she wouldn't show up when Li Dakang came.
When the second concubine stammered and told her, Xu Keke was shocked.
Du Bingtian's original idea was that since she had already gotten together with Yan Shuo, she should give Li Dakang to Du Yuan.
Xu Keke smiled. Needless to say, neither Li Dakang nor Yan Shuo had any improper thoughts about her. Even if they did have some ideas, they were two completely independent individuals, and she couldn't possibly control their desires at will.
"The Du family isn't the only one in the world with daughters. Why can't other families' daughters go for it? Does that mean the Du family's women are the best in the world?"
Xu Keke's words clearly stunned the second concubine. Xu Keke never expected that these people actually thought that these men were in the hands of the sisters, being passed around among them.
I don't know what the second concubine said, but Du Bingtian didn't let her go out again, but the look in his eyes became somewhat complicated.
Li Dakang came alone; his two sons and Du Rui had gone to Mayor Hu's house. Even so, he was still startled to see Du Bingtian, his second wife, and the Du sisters there.
"I wonder if I could speak with Miss Du alone?" Li Dakang asked Du Bingtian politely, his tone somewhat different from the perfunctory attitude he had shown at home last time.
Du Bingtian once again marveled at the charm of his eldest daughter.
Du Bingtian didn't express much, starting with his statement, "Of course..."
Xu Keke stood up and said, "Let's go to the study."
Xu Keke discovered yesterday that Du Bingtian's study was the best soundproof place in the house.
Du Yuan also stood up. Today she was wearing a purple, modernized Chinese-style cheongsam, quite different from her usual style. It was somewhat similar to the original owner's clothes that Xu Keke was wearing.
"Sister, let me pour you some tea and take it in."
She asked Xu Keke, but her eyes were fixed on Li Dakang. Xu Keke imitated her and looked at Li Dakang, asking for his opinion.
Li Dakang smiled gently, "Then I'll have to trouble you, Miss."
Du Yuan lowered her head shyly, her face beaming with barely suppressed joy. Xu Keke glanced subconsciously at Du Shan, who hadn't said much all day. Du Shan sat expressionless and indifferent on the sofa.
Xu Keke felt this reaction was correct, just like the two brothers who were dejected but had no choice but to leave. Their own mother had just been beaten by their own father, yet she was still thinking about romance. Du Yuan was either too selfish or too good at acting. Neither of these were good things.
Du Bingtian led them to his study. Xu Keke deliberately said to Li Dakang in front of him, "My father has been a deputy director for several years now. He has always been conscientious and hardworking. If the opportunity arises, I hope Mr. Li can put in a good word for him."
Li Dakang was taken aback. He hadn't expected Xu Keke to bring this up. He then said, "Of course. I often heard people mention your name in Nanjing. I thought you were afraid that taking on a full-time position would be too arduous, which is why you never showed any interest in it. Since you want to serve the country, promotion is only a matter of time."
This was a cleverly perfunctory remark, but unfortunately, Du Bingtian interpreted it according to his own ideas. Just like his second daughter, he walked away with an uncontrollable smile on his face, satisfied.
Xu Keke was also very satisfied. She had hoped that Du Bingtian would have expectations for this matter and feel confident. The greater the hope, the greater the disappointment, and once expectations are dashed, the intense sense of loss can be utterly disheartening.
Like the woman in the red diary, she longed for a better life, but ultimately left this world with disappointment.
Du Bingtian's study was tastefully decorated, with numerous oil paintings and photographs hanging on the walls. Judging from the style of the oil paintings, Xu Keke guessed that they were chosen by the original owner's mother, as the colors were all light and cheerful, quite different from the study of an average middle-aged person.
Directly opposite the large desk was the photo of the original owner's mother, which Du Shan had been mentioning. It was because of this photo that Xu Keke confirmed that Du Bingtian definitely did not kill the original owner's mother.
Imagine how twisted that man must be to face a photo of his murdered wife every day. Given Du Bingtian's obsession with officialdom, Xu Keke doesn't think he has the potential to be a psychopath.
“Is this your mother? You’re just as beautiful as her,” Li Dakang said, stopping in front of the photograph.
“I also lost my mother when I was very young. But my mother was different from yours; she was a mistress. A lowly woman.”
Li Dakang has a high, straight nose and narrow, cold eyes; his features alone give the impression that he is a very cold person. However, he has a deep dimple at the corner of his mouth, and when he purses his lips and raises one corner of his mouth, his smile makes him exceptionally charming, making people want to get close to him.
He must know this himself. He pursed his lips and smiled at Xu Keke.
"You're looking for the Du family's former butler, right? You wouldn't be like me, suspecting the death of your mother, would you?"
Xu Keke smiled but didn't say anything, waiting for him to continue.
“That day, it wasn’t an accident. You were arrested by Yan Shuo, right? By the time I got the news, it was too late. I called Nanjing, and the higher-ups contacted Commander Yan, but he didn’t know anything about Yan Shuo.”
Li Dakang's words were brief and to the point; he didn't say anything more. If Xu Keke didn't know how she was released, these few words would have made her suspect that Li Dakang had helped her get out.
"Then I must thank Mr. Li."
Du Yuan knocked and came in, placing the tea in front of them. She saw that one of them was sitting and the other was standing, not very close. Du Yuan's smile deepened.
