Since that box was given away, the Du family has become exceptionally harmonious. With Old Madam Du's intervention, Lin Meijuan has also started to visit the family.
The second concubine also told Xu Keke in private that Du Bingtian had sent the manager to Nanjing to look at houses.
Soon it arrived at the banquet held at Chief of Staff Chen's house. At this time, the situation was unstable, and the military held more power than the government in local areas. Especially since it was said that people from the Commander's Office were also attending the banquet, the attendees were even more distinguished than those at Mayor Hu's banquet.
The heads of all the households in the city had arrived.
Upon hearing the news, Du Bingtian dared not be careless any longer and brought his family to the banquet hall early in the morning.
This time, the Chen family held their banquet at their own villa.
As the car entered the main road leading up the mountain, guards carrying guns stood every two meters on both sides of the road. They stood ramrod straight, their expressions serious, giving the impression that they would open fire immediately at the slightest sign of trouble.
As the car drove halfway up the mountain, the entire villa was bathed in a warm orange glow. Closer up, the cool streetlights outside contrasted sharply with the bright, vibrant lights inside.
Standing at the villa's entrance and looking inside, one sees a jumble of figures, constant laughter, and cheerful saxophone music drifting from within. The lively atmosphere contrasts sharply with the quietude below, creating a world apart.
Xu Keke glanced around and noticed that several important concealed positions in the yard were all equipped with machine guns.
If Yan's army wanted to wipe out all these important figures in the city, it would be an incredibly easy task today.
Upon seeing them arrive, Second Master Sun was the first to step past the crowd and greet them. He grabbed Du Bingtian's hand.
"That's great, Director Du. I was worried you wouldn't come today. Now that you're here, that's perfect."
Before Du Bingtian could even greet anyone else, Master Sun pulled him away to another place, leaving the Du family behind.
Madam Du frowned in displeasure.
Fortunately, Du Jue was still there, and he took his family to see Chief of Staff Chen and his wife first. With multiple connections, the two sides naturally had a very pleasant conversation.
There were so many people today that people arrived very quickly. Chief of Staff Chen and his wife repeatedly instructed Fu Kai to treat them well before they went to entertain others.
The Du sisters, Yuan and Shan, seemed to have something on their minds today. They kept whispering to each other and exchanging glances. They said they were going to see a friend, ignoring Old Madam Du's displeased expression, and left everyone behind.
Old Madam Du couldn't bear to let Du Jue stay with them, so she pushed him away with Fu Kai.
Du Rui then took the second concubine to find the Jin family members.
Since Mayor Hu's family hadn't arrived yet, Du Wei was with her and Old Madam Du.
As Xu Keke was thinking of an excuse to leave, Fu Kai's second brother, Fu Lun, came over, made up a few words, and took her away.
"I never expected Miss Du to be so ruthless, not even sparing her own family."
Today, Fu Lun was still wearing his military uniform. If Yan Shuo hadn't told him he was a graduate of a military academy, the way he talked and walked would have made him look like a street thug.
As he led her up to the second floor, he made light of her conversation in a nonchalant manner.
Xu Keke knew what he meant and casually replied, "For the sake of the nation and its people, personal gains and losses are nothing."
Fu Lun chuckled. "Miss Du, you're the first to shout slogans so unenthusiastically. If you're going to lie, you have to put on an act."
Seeing Xu Keke's noncommittal expression, Fu Lun asked curiously, "What, do you think what I said is wrong?"
Xu Keke pretended to be profound and shook her head, saying, "The ocean accepts all rivers; just enter the sea."
Fu Lun was about to argue with her when Li Dakang came out of the room and happened to see the two of them. He paused for a moment, then stood in the second-floor corridor waiting for them to come up.
"You two know each other?"
"Of course, that day I went to arrest someone, and Miss Du happened to be buying jasmine tea, so I arrested her as a spy. Miss Du and I became friends after our misunderstanding."
Fu Lun seemed to speak to everyone in a rather unserious manner, but Li Dakang didn't seem to mind.
Where are you taking Miss Du?
Fu Lun shrugged. "The young marshal has something to attend to and will be coming later. He called and told me to keep an eye on her and make sure she doesn't suffer any more grievances. I don't want to be following her around watching over her. If she doesn't want to suffer, she can stay alone. I was thinking of having her wait in the study upstairs, and then letting her come down when the young marshal arrives."
He spoke so convincingly that Xu Keke almost believed him.
Li Dakang seemed to understand Xu Keke's character even better than she did, and wasn't surprised at all that he could do such a thing.
"Alright, when I came up here, your uncle was looking for you everywhere. It's just to the study, only a few steps away. I'll take you there."
Furen looked at him suspiciously, "This is someone the young marshal has his eye on, so don't cause trouble."
Li Dakang shrugged. "Never mind then. If you're worried, just deliver it yourself. It's only a short walk."
"Alright, alright, then I'll leave her to you." Fu Lun gestured with his chin towards Xu Keke. "Go inside and read a book for a while. Don't you girls all like to act quiet? If you need anything, there's a bell on the table. Press it, and the security guards downstairs will rush up. Don't keep pressing it; it'll tire them out."
The meaning was so obvious that Xu Keke naturally understood.
"You and Yan Shuo get along well?" Upon entering the study, Li Dakang parted the curtains to check the situation outside.
"It's alright!"
Xu Keke sat down on the sofa, and the two of them were just like they were in Du Bingtian's study that day. One was standing, and the other was sitting.
“You’re really impressive,” Li Dakang said, fiddling with the red velvet curtain in his hand, his eyes not looking at Xu Keke. “You’ve managed to enter Yan Shuo’s villa twice; you’re the first woman to do so. Are you interested in joining us?”
