Chapter 212 A Young Female Factory Worker in the 1930s (3)

Ding Tou's fainting actually made things easier for those people; they called two more people, and the four of them carried him out.

After a while, a foreman named Chen Hui came over to inquire about the situation.

He was taller and more robust than Ding Tou. You could tell from his eyes that he was smarter than the man surnamed Ding. At first, no one answered him, but seeing the impatience on his face, Su Ying stepped forward and recounted what had just happened.

He frowned when he heard that Ding Tou wanted to call Xu Keke out during the day. The boss hired these female workers here to do the work. If he called them out during the day, who would do the work?

Thinking that the injuries were inflicted by someone else, Chen Hui glanced suspiciously at the group of female workers in the room. He then thought it unlikely; he didn't believe they would dare to do anything. As for Xu Keke and Yun Sheng standing at the very edge, he didn't even look at them.

In his mind, these two children weren't even human. They didn't even know what resistance meant, let alone have the guts to do it.

"Behave yourselves and get to work properly. If you cause any more trouble, forget about food, I'll give you all a good beating first." After threatening them, Chen Hui kicked a bucket of water on the ground. "Hurry up and clean this place up, and get to work."

Although the boss doesn't interfere in these matters, he'd definitely be unhappy if he found out not all the female workers were actually working. That would cause trouble later. Thinking of this, Chen Hui added a final reminder before leaving.

"Old Ding just wants to see if any of you are slacking off or accidentally falling down. Keep your mouths shut and stop spreading nonsense."

None of the female workers responded to him, and he didn't seem to care. After he left, they silently righted the buckets and tidied up the things on the ground.

Xu Keke turned her head and saw Yun Sheng squatting blankly beside the stream of water. Xu Keke walked over, and the water was no longer hot, but had become a puddle with a few oil droplets floating on it.

From the moment Xu Keke started doing this, she never considered the need to hide it.

It's not that she's not afraid; it's that her mind is currently in a negative state. She's unable to actively consider the problem; her behavior stems from a desire to avoid harm. It's an unconscious, emergency-like reaction.

Suying led her to a corner and took out a metal box from her pocket. It was a medicated ointment provided by the factory for treating burns. Suying carefully applied it to her hand.

"Just pretend to carry the stick for a while, Ding is injured, they can't take care of this today."

Xu Keke went to check on the female workers. If Su Ying had seen it, it meant that others had seen it too. But the female workers seemed to think that none of this concerned them. They just silently continued working.

A few lively individuals looked up at them, but when they saw Xu Keke looking over, they quickly turned their heads away, pretending nothing had happened.

Xu Keke couldn't figure it out either; were they afraid of getting into trouble, or did they still have some feelings for the original owner?

Just as Su Ying had said, no foremen came to the site that day. However, the female workers there did not slack off; they were just as diligent as usual.

Only Zhao Di and her group seemed to be completely unrestrained, with laughter frequently coming from the next room.

For lunch, she ate pickled vegetable soup and flatbread. She used the lunchbox she had brought in the morning to get more. The flatbread had a musty taste. Xu Keke didn't like it. But if she didn't eat, she would feel even weaker.

Xu Keke struggled to put the food in her mouth, but the biscuit got stuck in her throat. She picked up her lunchbox, trying to drink some soup to help her swallow. Just then, Zhao Di's assistant, who had been collecting water in the shed that morning, came over.

He rushed over and slammed the lunchbox at Xu Keke, splashing soup all over her.

The female worker who was close to Xu Keke only flinched slightly, and even Su Ying, who was standing nearby, didn't say anything.

Seeing that none of the female workers sitting there dared to speak, the tall, thin woman smiled with satisfaction and tapped Xu Keke's head with her finger.

"Let's see you show off again! You little vixen."

Zhao Di and the others just watched with smiles. The woman seemed to think that wasn't enough, so she snatched the pancake from Xu Keke's hand and threw it on the ground.

"If you want to eat, then go pick it up and eat it. You despicable thing, you don't deserve to eat like this."

After saying this, she threw Xu Keke's lunchbox out as well.

Soup dripped down Xu Keke's hair, the sticky feeling seeping into her skin. Xu Keke silently stood up, covered in soup, and walked over, picking up the flatbread and lunchbox from the ground.

Just now, when she walked over and made her move, Xu Keke had already anticipated her actions. Counterattacking with her small frame was impossible, but dodging wasn't difficult.

But Xu Keke knew perfectly well that she couldn't provoke this woman right now. She couldn't do anything more than endure it. Otherwise, if the foreman surnamed Ding got into trouble, people would connect it to her.

If she were to have a direct confrontation with them, she would definitely get injured; they wouldn't give her food unless she worked. She desperately needed to conserve her strength.

The woman was finally satisfied with her compliance. She happily returned to Zhao Di's side.

Xu Keke brushed the dirt off the flatbread in her hand and stuffed it into her mouth again. Su Ying pushed her lunchbox towards Xu Keke. There was still half a lunchbox of soup inside.

Despite the nausea on her skin, Xu Keke still took a sip. But Xu Keke wasn't the original owner of this body, and that one sip almost made her vomit.

Xu Keke kept telling herself to be patient; this was just a test. Endure it, things will get better. Don't act rashly, just bear with it. She was terrified she would explode, recklessly fighting these people to the death.

Fortunately, no one bothered her until the end of the workday. However, lying in bed that night, Xu Keke's hand ached so much that she couldn't sleep well.

Two more days passed, and Xu Keke followed the instructions of the other female workers. Zhao Di and the others didn't bother her again. However, because she burned her hand, Xu Keke developed a low-grade fever. Her concentration became increasingly difficult, and she nearly fainted several times.

At that moment, the foreman surnamed Ding returned from the hospital.

Chen Hui, the foreman in charge of them now, asked Xu Keke to take care of him.

The foreman's dormitory was in another row, not in the same place as theirs.

Upon entering the room, Ding Tou was reclining on the bed, bandages visible through his disheveled clothes. He scrutinized Xu Keke and said fiercely, "You're the one who pushed the bucket over."

Without a second thought, Xu Keke knew he was bluffing. She ignored him, keeping her head down and remaining silent.

Ding Tou didn't think there was anything wrong with her reaction.

On the contrary, Xu Keke looked around as soon as she came in, which made him feel that she seemed a little different from before.

Xu Keke lowered her eyes, her long eyelashes obscuring everything in them.

She had just noticed a pile of pills in white paper bags on the bedside table. This guy, Ding Tou, had gone to see a Western doctor. He was also being treated for burns, so his medicine would be fine for him to take himself.

But how do we get our hands on the medicine?
