"Alright, let's not waste any more time. Chairman Lin specially arranged two tables at Jufulou to entertain you."
Ignoring everyone else, Zhang called out to Xu Keke and walked towards the car.
Xu Keke turned to Chen Zikang and his wife and said with special filial piety, "Hurry up and bring your younger siblings with you."
This one sentence immediately revealed the difference in their status. Chairman Lin saw that Chen Zikang's expression had worsened. He now truly wanted to take back everything he had said in front of the others earlier that morning on Chen Zikang's behalf.
Besides being accused of dishonesty, businessmen are also afraid of being criticized for poor judgment.
He's the president of the chamber of commerce, after all. If he recommends anyone in the future, they'll definitely remember this.
"Maybe we shouldn't go,"
Li Wan felt incredibly ashamed; that's how she lost her daughter all those years ago. She never expected to bring her daughter back. She had envisioned a happy family reunion.
But it turned out like this. She has no appetite to eat. That would be even more embarrassing.
"No, get in the car quickly, don't delay us and make people wait for us," Chen Zikang immediately disagreed.
"Huihui, don't cry, Daddy will take you to eat."
Chen Zikang picked up his daughter in one go. The ten-year-old girl was so big that it was difficult for him to even get her into the car.
Huihui was still feeling wronged and wouldn't cooperate, twisting her body to get off the car. The two of them accidentally bumped into each other, and Chen Zikang's head hit the car door directly.
Chen Zikang wasn't angry and coaxed her into the car. He turned around and yelled at Li Wan, "What are you standing there for? Get Xiao Pu in the car now!"
Li Wan knew he was in a bad mood, so she didn't take his tone to heart. She continued to comfort him even after he got in the car.
"Send someone to tell us that something has happened at home and we should go back. If we go there, they're unlikely to say anything nice to us."
Chen Zikang told the driver to drive faster and not to slow down.
Turning her head, she glared at him, "What's wrong with you today? Are you out of your mind? Why did you suddenly go somewhere? These aren't ordinary people; you can't just brush them off like that."
Besides, given what that kid did, they definitely have a problem with us. We should explain things now while the misunderstanding is still minor. Otherwise, we might not even have a chance to see each other again.
Li Wan sighed. She knew her husband was right. She regretted not being closer to the child earlier, but she thought she would take it slowly and things would get better once the child became more comfortable.
Her husband was talking to himself and didn't pay attention to her.
These people are just too nosy; they can't just stop posting anything, they have to come and take what they want.
Watching her husband laughing and coaxing Huihui, Li Wanke wasn't as optimistic as him. She had a feeling these people weren't easy to talk to.
Chen Zikang wiped away his beloved daughter's tears. "Daddy doesn't want to hit Huihui either, but if Daddy doesn't, those people will hit her even harder. Look at them, they all look so fierce and scary. They don't know when to stop..."
“It’s my fault, sister. You shouldn’t interrupt when adults are talking. Grandfather also said last time that you have no manners.”
Chen Pu, who had been silent all along, suddenly leaned over and said something.
Huihui, who had stopped crying, immediately protested when Chen Pu criticized her. Pulling at her sleeve, she tearfully argued with Chen Zikang,
"No, I was angry because he yelled at my dad. I'm not unruly."
"No, no, how could our Huihui be unruly? Don't listen to your brother."
Seeing that she had finally calmed down, she started crying again. Chen Zikang took a handkerchief and wiped her face, saying, "Don't cry, your face is already swollen. If you cry any more, it will soak your face and hurt. Your brother is wrong, so Dad will hit him."
Chen Zikang sat on one side of the car door, and Chen Pu sat on the other side. Since they were going to hit him, they had to get past Huihui and Li Wan.
He had just reached out his hand when Li Wan slapped it back.
"Alright, Xiao Pu wasn't wrong. When I went to see Grandpa these past few days, he mentioned that you went to pick up Hui..." Thinking of something, Li Wan pursed her lips.
"When I mentioned you went to pick up Minghui, Huihui interrupted from the side, and Grandpa got really angry, saying you've spoiled her rotten. You shouldn't indulge her so much. In front of all the concubines and sisters-in-law, I was embarrassed too. Just you wait, once they know you're back, they'll definitely call you over to talk to you."
Li Wan's interruption made Chen Zikang forget to reprimand his son.
Because they had separated from the Chen family and were living independently for the past two years, the great-grandfather was not happy. With this as a pretext, he was sure to say something unpleasant.
Before he could figure out how to push the car, it arrived at Jufulou.
When they went up, several cold dishes had already been served.
When they went inside, no one paid them any attention. The wives of these men were surrounding Xu Keke, some putting gold locks on her fingers, others showing her fashionable little watches.
The bigwigs pretended not to see them come in.
They were left standing there, unsure whether to go forward or retreat.
Li Wan's face turned ugly, inwardly blaming Chen Zikang for not listening to her. Chen Zikang, however, was now filled with hatred for Xu Keke. He refused to believe she couldn't see or hear them coming in.
Hmph, he refused to believe that he couldn't handle such a little brat.
Seeing that it was about time, Chairman Lin gave his wife a wink.
Although Madam Lin did not know what was going on, she knew that the Chen couple must have done something to their daughter who had been brought back.
Otherwise, their chairman wouldn't have had this attitude this morning.
Chairman Lin's first wife passed away two years ago, and this woman is his new wife. She is not old, and she walks gracefully towards the Chen family.
Holding Li Wan's hand, he said, "Why are you standing? Hurry up and sit down. You two are really good at having children. Even Mrs. Zhang, who is so picky, says that this child is well-raised. She is so well-mannered and quiet."
These words were undoubtedly a slap in the face to Li Wan. She was capable of giving birth, but she was also well-raised; unfortunately, they weren't the ones who raised her, and she suffered greatly from a young age.
