Chapter 240 A Young Female Factory Worker in the 1930s 31

During the meal, someone suddenly asked, "Miss Chen, I wonder if your journey has been smooth? I heard that the waves were quite rough a few days ago. I wonder if you got seasick on the ship."

Another person said, "Yes, it must be unpleasant to be on a boat for the first time and encounter storms."

Li Wan, sitting at another table, felt a pang of emotion upon hearing this. She hadn't thought it through; she'd even forgotten to ask her daughter's name after seeing her.

She looked across several people at her daughter sitting at the head table.

The little girl looks like her, with delicate features, but she looks a bit too thin.

Suddenly, Chen Zikang, who was sitting next to her, spoke up, "We've had a relatively peaceful time on the ship. The journey has been smooth sailing."

Li Wan frowned. They had already made it clear they didn't want her, so there was no point in shamelessly trying to get closer. Why bother humiliating herself further?

She gave Chen Zikang a disapproving look.

Sure enough, the room fell silent the moment Chen Zikang spoke. No one responded.

This completely embarrassed Chen Zikang. He sat at the table, his face turning red and then white.

Even the two concubines sitting next to him scoffed disdainfully.

“Yes, our journey was relatively smooth.” Xu Keke spoke up, getting Chen Zikang out of the awkward situation.

Li Wan breathed a sigh of relief, while Chen Zikang's hand, which was tightly gripping the chopsticks, showed prominent veins.

"However, something happened on our first day on the ship. My father took me to the deck, saying we could see big fish jumping around..."

Li Wan, who was listening to her daughter, heard a 'clatter' as her husband's chopsticks fell to the ground. She turned her head and found that her husband, who was sitting next to her, had turned extremely pale.

She didn't know what had happened on the ship. She listened intently, still busy.

"I don't know what suddenly went wrong with that man, he ran towards me. I happened to see what looked like a fish over there, so I went to my father's side and pointed it out to him. As a result, that man dragged my father and himself down with him."

Everyone in the room was shocked. Master Zhang asked coldly, "And then?"

"Fortunately, my father reacted quickly and grabbed the railing. I held my father's hand and asked for help. People who came later pulled my father up. But that person fell down, and no one went to save him."

Luckily, I saw the fish then, otherwise I would have been the one who crashed into it.

These people sitting here are all seasoned veterans; none of them have clean hands. Some of the most unethical things they've done are not just hearsay, but things they've committed themselves.

Several people turned to look at Chen Zikang.

Chen Zikang tried to force a smile, his lips trembling for a long time, but he couldn't manage to laugh. The people's gazes were too piercing; he couldn't even bring himself to say anything casually.

Li Wan, watching from the side, was completely baffled. She poked him with her finger.

She scolded, "It was so dangerous, why didn't you say anything when you met him? I don't even know if the child was frightened."

After saying her last words, she looked at Xu Keke with a questioning and concerned expression in her eyes.

Xu Keke smiled at her, "I'm fine, but my father seems quite frightened. I went to see him twice, but he wouldn't open the door for me. He must be sick."

Master Zhang sneered, "You've got some nerve. After something happened, you not only knew to grab your father's hand, but you also knew to go see him. You're almost as bold as an adult."

The ladies also offered their condolences to Xu Keke to varying degrees.

Chen Zikang had been thinking of finding an opportunity to explain what happened at the docks. Now he regretted not listening to Li Wan.

If I had known it would turn out like this, I would have just said I had something to do at home and made up some excuse not to come.

After that, Chen Zikang didn't dare to speak again, and everyone assumed that his family was not there.

After dinner, Mr. Zhang offered to take Xu Keke to stay at his house for a few days, but Xu Keke declined.

Mr. Zhang could only drive her back to the Chen mansion.

After entering the Chen mansion, Li Wan was even more at a loss as to how to face her daughter.

Chen Zikang entered the room, ignoring even his beloved Huihui, and went straight back to his room.

Xu Keke laughed when she heard that she was arranged to share a room with Huihui.

She didn't understand what Li Wan was thinking. Chen Zikang didn't like her, and although she didn't know why, she could understand.

But Li Wan, didn't she say that she was crying so much that she couldn't eat or drink because she couldn't find her daughter?

When they met, she felt it was a case of someone who professed to love something but was terrified of it.

"Would she be willing to live with me?" Xu Keke stood in the living room, looking intently at Huihui, and asked Li Wan.

“Of course Huihui is willing. It was Huihui who suggested it. She said she wanted to live with her sister.” Li Wan tried to keep her tone calm and spoke softly to Xu Keke.

"She wants to live with me, so why didn't you ask me or think about whether I wanted to live with her?"

Li Wan was speechless after being choked by Xu Keke's words.

She truly hadn't expected that when Huihui first brought it up, her husband had been praising Huihui, saying she was a kind-hearted and good girl. Even before meeting her, she already knew she wanted to be close to her older sister.

She really didn't consider whether her daughter would be unhappy.

"Mom thought you would like being with your sisters. So..."

Xu Keke interrupted rudely, "I don't like it. I don't like living in the same room as an ugly girl. I'll have nightmares if I see her. She has too many freckles on her face. She's really ugly."

Li Wan was stunned. Ever since she picked up her daughter, she had always acted like an adult. Her sudden childish words left her somewhat bewildered.

Huihui is still only ten years old, and she had already suffered a lot today. Her father first hit her, then ignored her during the meal. He didn't even hold her hand when they left the restaurant. On the way home, she pretended to be unhappy, but he didn't try to comfort her.
