Chapter 242 A Young Female Factory Worker in the 1930s 33

Everyone in the family was asleep that night. Chen Zikang came out of the study and went to the next room.

Aunt Zhang was sitting in the house, tidying up Huihui's things that she had just moved in today.

Seeing Chen Zikang come in, he quickly dropped what he was doing and went to greet him.

"Why did you take so long to arrive? Miss cried again and thought you would come to see her. She tried to stay awake for a long time, but her eyelids were drooping so much that she finally fell asleep."

The bed was makeshift and a bit small, but luckily the girl was young and petite. It was just right for her to sleep in, though it wasn't as big as her original bed.

Chen Zikang sat down on the edge of the bed, half-turned to the side.

I knew Huihui must have just fallen asleep not long ago, because the corners of her eyes were red from rubbing them, and the color hadn't faded yet.

Chen Zikang touched her face tenderly.

"She's been wronged today. Tomorrow, get some money from the manager and find a chance to take her to buy something she likes. Try to persuade her more often. I have to keep her quiet in front of others these days. Things will get better after this period."

Aunt Zhang was puzzled. "You should have said these things to Miss yourself. She knows you still care about her, so she shouldn't be so upset. The child is always afraid that when Miss comes back, they won't want her anymore and will send her back home."

Chen Zikang withdrew his hand and tucked the blanket around Huihui.

"She's still a child, and I'm afraid she won't be able to keep things to herself. Don't tell anyone it was me who said this; if she really stops crying and making a fuss, they probably won't believe it."

Zhang Ma thought he was referring to Li Wan and was somewhat dismissive.

The lady is just a show-off; it's all up to the master to decide. What's there to believe or not believe?

She only dared to think these words in her heart and did not dare to say them to Chen Zikang's face.

"If the child's biological mother were here, she could at least be looked after. It's better than this, with no one caring or paying attention."

These words were like a needle prick to Li Wan. The madam always agreed verbally, but she never truly cared about her young mistress.

Chen Zikang paused, seemingly lost in thought. He glanced at Huihui on the bed and said, "That's even worse timing. Don't mention it to her."

Although she didn't know what he was thinking, Zhang Ma was relieved to hear that he hadn't said anything definitive, and said softly, "How could I? How could I tell Miss? I haven't told her anything."

Chen Zikang got up and left, with Zhang Ma following behind to see him off. Neither of them noticed Huihui lying on the bed, her eyelashes blinking repeatedly.

The next day, when Xu Keke came downstairs, her family was already waiting in the living room.

Today, Li Wan wore a light purple gauze robe with a darker, matching vest embroidered with white flowers. Seeing Xu Keke come downstairs, she quickly got up to greet her.

Seeing that she was still wearing blue overalls made me feel a little uncomfortable.

Last night, she was thinking of going to see her daughter. She hesitated for a long time alone in her room. She was afraid that her daughter would talk to her about her past life.

She knew that if she saw him, she would inevitably have to ask him, and if she did, he would tell her.

She was afraid her daughter would tell her how much suffering she had endured outside after they abandoned her.

She would definitely feel extremely guilty and remorseful.

She dared not think about these things. Just thinking about them made her feel terrible. So she didn't want to hear about them. As long as she didn't know, she could pretend none of those things had happened.

But now she regrets it; she really should have gone over and said a few words last night.

Li Wan straightened Xu Keke's overalls straps and asked softly,

"Last night, I didn't go to see you because I was afraid of disturbing your rest. Why didn't you wear the clothes I sent you this morning?"

Xu Keke tilted her head and glanced at herself; the shoulder straps of her overalls were already straight.

After hearing Li Wan's question, he realized that she was dissatisfied with the clothes she was wearing.

Xu Keke looked at the others. Chen Zikang and Chen Pu were both wearing suspender trousers and short-sleeved shirts. They looked very formal.

Huihui sat on the other side of Chen Zikang, her hair specially curled today. She wore a light pink tulle dress, dressed like a little princess.

Someone gave her the same tulle dress that morning, but it was light blue. She didn't like it, so she didn't wear it.

Huihui sat listlessly in the corner of the sofa. She saw Chen Zikang get up and walk towards her. Although her face didn't look good, she didn't cry like she did yesterday.

“Minghui looks just like you, she looks good in anything. It’s okay.”

Xu Keke didn't understand what was going on. But she saw Li Wan visibly relax, her anxious expression easing considerably.

She brushed a stray hair behind her ear and gave Chen Zikang a reproachful look, "What are you saying in front of the child?"

"I'm not right. You tell me, doesn't Minghui look like you? Big eyes, upturned nose, fair skin, she looks good in any color."

With just a few words, the joy in Li Wan's eyes was impossible to hide.

Xu Keke smiled; the relationship between this couple was quite interesting. Since returning, Chen Zikang hadn't gone back to the bedroom, staying entirely in the study.

Moreover, Chen Zikang's attitude towards Li Wan yesterday wasn't particularly good. While it might have been described as the calm and collected demeanor of an old married couple, a closer look revealed a certain coldness in Chen Zikang's actions and words. This was quite different from his behavior this morning.

This morning, just a few words were enough to make Li Wan very happy.

While sitting in the car, Chen Zikang leaned over to comfort Li Wan, saying that her great-grandfather was old and she shouldn't take his words to heart, and that if anything happened, he could just push the blame onto her.

Xu Keke looked out the car window. Through the glass, she could see Huihui sitting next to her, who was completely different from the arrogant Huihui of her past life. Huihui was as docile as a quail.
