Chapter 244 A Young Female Factory Worker in the 1930s (35)

When a group of women are chatting, if more than three people agree, it eventually becomes a discussion of everyone's opinions.

Li Wan's explanations sounded particularly weak and powerless amidst the words of this group of women. No one even bothered to listen to what she was saying.

The red velvet sofa behind her made her face appear even paler.

The women were no longer talking about clothes; they were now discussing how to take good care of their children as mothers.

These words clearly refer to Li Wan, implying that she didn't care enough about her child, which led to the child's loss.

Just then, the sounds of boys running and their joyful laughter came from upstairs.

Xu Keke, sitting next to Li Wan, could see clearly that the purple gauze on Li Wan's right arm was trembling as she trembled slightly.

So much so that she had to press her right hand down hard with her left hand to avoid being noticed.

"Alright, what mother wouldn't care about her child? Awan didn't mean to lose the child."

The woman in her forties who brought them in saw that the women had said enough and stepped in to smooth things over.

But this statement brought all the things these women had said into the open.

“Mother-in-law, I don’t agree with what you’re saying. If I raised the child like that, what would you do?”

Xu Keke then realized that the woman who brought them in was the mother-in-law of this young seventh aunt, who was also the wife of the third branch of the Chen family.

"I'm thirsty, is there any water here?"

Taking advantage of the moment when the women were listening to the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law talking, Xu Keke decisively interrupted them.

Huihui, who had been sitting with her head down, suddenly looked up and stared at her in disbelief. She never dared to ask them for anything.

These women hadn't expected anyone to suddenly interrupt their conversation.

"I don't know how to address you. Could you have a servant bring me some water? Aren't you thirsty?"

Xu Keke looked at Aunt Qi's mother-in-law, because at the moment only she wanted to play the role of a good person.

"Just call me Third Grandma. I'll have someone bring you some plum juice; it was freshly made this morning."

Good people are good at getting things done. The Third Madam and the Seventh Young Mistress exchanged a quick glance, smiled, and got up to go out and prepare drinks for Xu Keke.

Li Wan felt somewhat lost, and she looked worriedly across the street. The seventh brother's family members were giving her unfriendly looks. Her daughter's actions just now might have displeased them.

She was afraid they would start fighting, and if it didn't look good, her husband would definitely be unhappy.

She sensed that Xu Keke was about to say something, and she wanted to stop her. However, she wasn't familiar with this daughter, and she didn't know what to say.

Before she could make up her mind, Xu Keke spoke up again.

"Don't you think my outfit looks good?" Without even a proper address, Xu Keke pointed at Aunt Qi across from her with her chin.

"But I think it looks fine. I just think this cheongsam you're wearing doesn't suit you; it makes your face look particularly dark. And the waist area looks a bit tight. Is it because you've gained weight recently and don't have money to buy a new one?"

The seventh grandmother of the third branch was shocked. "What did you say? Who did you say has no money? Sister-in-law, is this the kind of child you raised?"

She was furious. Since she came to the Chen family, no one had ever dared to speak to her like that.

She stood up briskly from the sofa, wearing high heels, and walked directly to Li Wan.

She wouldn't fight with a child; even if she won, she'd be accused of bullying the weak.

She pointed at Xu Keke and looked at Li Wan. Her eyes were wide open, as if she wanted to devour her alive.

Xu Keke leaned back, making herself more comfortable. Li Wan, sitting next to her, stood up with an apologetic look on her face.

"Minghui is still young and doesn't understand..."

Xu Keke didn't give Li Wan a chance to speak at all, interrupting her.

"You know I wasn't taught by her. You always talk about money. I bet you envy what others wear because you don't have any. Otherwise, you would have bought your own long ago."

"Minghui, stop talking." Li Wan's tone was urgent.

"She has no manners at all. Sister-in-law, I'm really trying to advise you, but are you sure she's the child you lost? Could she be pretending to be rich because she knows you have money?"

Grandma Qi turned to the others and said, "What do you all think? I think she doesn't even look as much like my sister-in-law as Huihui."

The other women all agreed with her, saying they thought so too. They even said they didn't think the two looked alike from the moment they walked in.

"You think you're always right? Who do you think you are? Who gave you the confidence to judge others so casually?"

Xu Keke's disdainful look was practically saying, "Who do you think you are?"

"Minghui!" Li Wan shouted. You could tell she was genuinely anxious.

“Sister-in-law, if you don’t give us an explanation for how she treats us elders, this matter is not over today.”

Grandma Qi pointed at Xu Keke with her finger.

"You said you'd give me an explanation, but what kind of explanation do you want?"

Xu Keke shook off Li Wan's hand that was grabbing her arm. "Didn't you hear what they said? They said you're not my mother, so you can't control me now."

Aunt Qi seized on the loophole in her words and sneered, "Since you're not my sister-in-law's daughter, who allowed you to sit here? Please leave our Chen family immediately."

The noise from this side was quite loud, disturbing the people in the other houses.

Even Old Master Chen was helped in by his sixth aunt and Chen Zikang.

Huihui, on the other side, was startled and stood up next to the sofa at Chen Zikang's signal.

Xu Keke ignored her completely, remaining seated and not even standing up. She was fearless, never one to cause trouble.
