Chapter 245 A Young Female Factory Worker in the 1930s 36

Xu Ke saw how much the Chen family didn't want her to acknowledge her ancestors.

Chen Zikang was dealing with all of them alone. He was emphasizing that Xu Keke was their daughter and that he had not made a mistake.

But his words were hollow, without a single factual basis. He kept repeating that Xu Keke and Li Wan looked alike, and that the police had confirmed it.

Because he couldn't lay everything out on the table and explain in detail what the wet nurse and Manager Chen had done.

The Chen family, however, completely disagreed with his two points. A few words were enough to refute him, leaving him speechless.

Chen Zikang felt a pang of regret. He had been afraid his grandfather would nag him again for not acting carefully enough. Besides, he secretly didn't want his grandfather to know just how capable the daughter he had taken in was.

So he didn't mention the dock.

I only briefly mentioned Manager Chen's situation. This is because Manager Chen is from a branch of the Chen family. Since he suddenly got into such a big mess at the Chen family's business, his family definitely needs an explanation.

Fortunately, Chen Zikang lost his parents at a young age and was raised by his grandfather. Therefore, his grandfather knew his grandson quite well.

Seeing his constant denials, Old Master Chen knew there must be something going on.

He waved his hand hastily, "Alright, Zikang and his wife know what they're doing. There's no need for others to interfere."

He wanted to let it go, but Xu Keke wouldn't allow it.

"You make it sound so easy. It's their business, they know what's going on. Why argue for so long?"

Xu Keke sat on the sofa and looked at Old Master Chen. It was alright; at this distance, she didn't need to look up at him, she could see his shock just by looking straight ahead.

In all these years, no one has dared to speak to him like that. Old Master Chen stared at Xu Keke. His gaze was intimidating, but Xu Keke wasn't afraid of him.

“Grandfather, you saw it, didn’t you? That’s how arrogant she is. She was even worse when she spoke to me just now. If you don’t believe me, ask my aunts and sisters-in-law. They all saw it.”

Grandma Chen's words didn't make him any angrier. He had already sensed something was amiss. His grandson's attitude, and the girl's demeanor—there was definitely something going on.

Xu Keke remained completely unconcerned. She was tired of sitting so long and slouching. She shifted her body slightly, and just when everyone thought she was about to stand up, they realized she was simply adjusting her posture.

Xu Keke said disdainfully to Seventh Grandma,

"It's only natural that I'm not nice to you. I've never lived in the Chen family, but I was taught from a young age that if someone treats me badly, I'll treat them even worse. Anyone with a brain could tell whether your veiled accusations were malicious. I've already been very polite to you."

"Master, Master," a servant rushed in, "the gentlemen in the hall have arrived."

Old Master Chen was startled. The gentlemen in the hall were, in fact, a few people who, like him, served as advisors in the Executive Council.

These people don't usually interact much, not because they have a bad relationship, but because they all put on airs. It's just that the job they're given doesn't yield any tangible results.

To outsiders, the more poised and authoritative someone is, the more extraordinary they seem. Just like Zhuge Liang back then.

When you take the initiative to approach others, you're essentially admitting you're inferior. But what could these people possibly want if they suddenly come to you?

Seeing that Old Master Chen was in a hurry to leave, Chen Zikang glanced at Xu Keke with alarm.

Seeing that his seventh sister-in-law was still not giving up, he quickly gave his seventh brother a wink.

The Seventh Young Master didn't understand, so he let go of his wife's shoulder and followed Chen Zikang out.

After waiting a while, he walked in with a complicated expression. He tugged at the still aggressive Seventh Young Mistress.

"It seems your father-in-law has arrived as well. Why don't you go out and greet him first? We'll talk here later."

The others also sensed something was wrong and followed them outside.

"Minghui!" Li Wan whispered, sitting down next to Xu Keke when everyone was no longer paying attention to them.

"Don't be like that. They're just a bit sharp-tongued. That's how big families are; there are all sorts of people, and disagreements are inevitable. Just give in a little and everything will be fine."

Xu Ke could probably tell that Li Wan's worries were not unfounded.

"You gave in, and everything's fine now. I think they've only gotten worse."

Li Wan didn't want her daughter to look down on her. "It's not that. What they're talking about is nothing more than trivial matters. Just be careful not to give them any leverage against you, and that'll be fine."

"Handle? What you wear is called a handle. Why should we listen to them about what to wear? Why should we make them like us? And who told you that big families are like this, without even basic manners?"

Li Wan originally intended to persuade her daughter, but instead, she was scolded by her.

Li Wan was even more anxious, but she was completely helpless.

Xu Keke noticed that her right hand had started trembling again. "What's wrong with your right hand?"

"No, it's nothing..." Li Wan said, but her left hand was pressing hard on her right hand.

Aunt Liu walked in with a smile, "Young Miss, they would like to invite you over there."

She spoke very politely, and her tone suggested that if Xu Keke said she wouldn't go, she would immediately help her refuse.

"Sixth Aunt, what is it that you need Minghui to come over for?" Li Wan was now confused and couldn't figure out why Old Master Chen would send his daughter over to see a guest.

"Grandma, don't worry, don't worry, it's a good thing."

Li Wan suddenly understood, and her gaze towards Xu Keke changed. "You knew beforehand?"

"Know what?" Xu Keke got up and walked out. "What could I possibly know? I'm just a child, what could I possibly know!"

Yes, she's just a child, how could she have made arrangements in advance? Besides, those people aren't people she could ask to help.
