When they got home, the vegetarian tofu buns that Lin Juan had steamed for Song Lin had just come out of the steamer.
I heard that Zhao Di has already gone to school. Lin Juan didn't say much more.
She didn't ask Xu Keke for help, and Xu Keke didn't move forward either. To Xu Keke's surprise, Lin Juan gave her two steamed buns and told her to eat them while they were hot.
This was something that had never happened before, and Xu Keke was quite moved.
"Hurry up and finish eating, then take it to Song Lin."
As she spoke, Lin Juan served her a bowl of millet porridge and tossed a plate of pickled vegetables onto the table.
The treatment was so good that Xu Keke was somewhat surprised.
The steamed buns were delicious, the porridge was fragrant and sticky, and the pickled vegetables were refreshing. These steamed buns were big; after eating two, Xu Keke couldn't eat anymore.
Seeing Xu Keke staring at the steamed buns in the steamer, Lin Juan said guiltily,
"Zhao Di is coming over for dinner later. And since it's evening, I won't cook. Let's continue eating steamed buns."
Xu Keke nodded in agreement, picked up the lunchbox, and walked out, thinking to herself, "I don't believe you for a second. Those were three steamers of buns! You might as well just say you're giving them away. Do you really think you'd eat that much yourself?"
Since she had enough to eat, Xu Keke didn't care about anything else.
When I arrived at the hospital, Lin Meijia had arrived even earlier than me.
This time, however, Song Lin was smarter and didn't eat; he was still waiting for her.
Hearing that it was his mother who made the tofu buns, he promptly gave Lin Meijia's meal to Du Yi.
Du Yi surprisingly stated that Lin Meijia's meal was specially brought for Song Lin. He could eat the meal brought by Xu Keke.
The two men were pushing and shoving each other right in front of Lin Meijia. Even Xu Keke felt sorry for Lin Meijia.
Those two men are going too far. They'd give up beauty for a meager meal; men really are heartless bastards.
Considering that she still needed Song Lin's help today, Xu Keke decisively let Song Lin win and put Lin Meijia's meal on Du Yi's table.
Lin Meijia's face was beyond just ugly; it was truly awful.
“Master Zeng, I heard that you suggested to the factory that my master go to Beijing to study.”
Lin Meijia gave herself a way out by changing the subject away from lunch.
Perfect timing! Xu Keke had originally planned to tell Song Lin about this. She nodded hurriedly, "Yes, I brought it up with the factory manager. When it comes to recommending talent, one shouldn't avoid relatives."
Song Lin paused, his hand holding the steamed bun still. "You recommended me?"
He could hardly believe it, because if she knew about the trip to Beijing to study, she couldn't possibly be unaware, and she would have taken the initiative to approach the factory about it. Song Lin felt a rare sense of shame.
"Yeah, you heard it, didn't you?" What kind of ears does this person have? Xu Keke thought to herself.
“I think you’re a tech person by nature. I heard you’re going to Beijing to learn about design. It would be perfect for you to go.”
"No, Master," Lin Meijia said anxiously, "the main problem is your leg isn't good yet. Master Zeng insisted you go like this. What if something happens to you on the way..."
"Whatever happens, there will definitely be a car to take you to the train station, another car to pick you up when you arrive, and other comrades to accompany you on the way. Going to class isn't like jumping around. Carrying a cane is no problem at all."
Xu Keke spoke so casually that Song Lin believed her. "Yes, I just have a minor leg injury, nothing serious."
Song Lin certainly wanted to go; the factory would give priority to training outstanding workers in the workshops. But junior staff members like him in the technical department weren't valued in the factory.
These learning opportunities are not easily given to them without connections.
"No, Master, if you go over there like this to visit the factory or something..."
"Meijia, you must trust your master. He will find a way to overcome the difficulties. Such a rare opportunity will be fleeting."
Song Lin nodded in agreement.
"Brother Song, if you don't eat steamed buns, could you give me one? I'd really like to try one."
Seeing that Song Lin hadn't eaten for a while, Du Yi interjected and asked a question.
Hearing this, Song Lin, who was in a state of excitement, generously handed a steamed bun to Du Yi.
Du Yi took a bite, and his expression changed. "It's really delicious."
"Right, that's what I said to my mother-in-law today too."
Xu Keke naturally started chatting with Du Yi about how delicious steamed buns were. Finally, Xu Keke generously offered to bring him more delicious food in the future.
Xu Keke looked at Du Yi, who was only a few bites away from finishing his meal.
He casually asked, "You're the one who told Director Du to give Lin Meijia the spot for this training trip to Beijing, right?"
"Yes!" Du Yi nodded as he ate. "How did you know?"
As soon as he asked that question, Du Yi knew something was wrong.
"It was just a guess, how else could I know?" Xu Keke explained to Du Yi frankly, seeing Lin Meijia's changed expression.
"When they asked me to deliver the keys that day, I felt something was off. You know, if I hadn't gone straight back to the factory that day, I wouldn't have even known about this quota."
If I didn't get to see the director, the spot would have to go to someone else. At the time, I thought, what a coincidence.
Although I felt something was off, I didn't dare to doubt Meijia, after all, she was Song Lin's apprentice. And their master-apprentice relationship was good.
But just now I told you to let your brother Song go and study, and Meijia keeps saying discouraging things, saying this won't work, that won't work.
I was thinking, she's Song Lin's apprentice. Logically, Meijia should be happy for her master that he gave her my spot. Shouldn't she be encouraging him to strive for success in his career?
Later, after much thought, I realized there was only one possibility: if neither Song Lin nor I went, the spot would go to Meijia. Otherwise, she wouldn't have been so eager to persuade Song Lin not to go.
