"Lichun, what are you doing? You'll ruin Yuanbao's father's future again!" The old woman grabbed Xu Keke's clothes, trying to pull her away. But she was too thin and weak; even though Xu Keke had little strength, she couldn't move her.
"Aunt Hua is right. Just have Da Cui apologize and give the money back. What's all the fuss about?" The old woman was so anxious that her hands, which were gripping her clothes, were trembling.
Xu Keke didn't look at her, but leaned against the door, remaining still despite the woman outside banging on the door.
"Feng Lichun, this isn't over yet! Come out here and tell your child to give me back the money!" That was the fat woman's voice.
"Come out! Come out now! Don't think you can get away with hiding!"
Amidst the chaotic footsteps outside the door, one could hear people running away hastily. More and more people gathered around.
Although she knew it was a bit rushed, Xu Keke still closed her eyes and began to receive the original owner's memories.
The original owner of this body, Feng Lichun, lost both her parents at a young age and grew up with her older brother and sister-in-law. At the age of 16, she married Zhou Chengguang, a childhood sweetheart from the same village who was two years older than her.
After their marriage, although life was hard, the two were deeply in love. The following year, they had their daughter, Da Cui. In the third year, when Feng Lichun was pregnant with Yuanbao, Zhou Chengguang followed the Red Army soldiers who passed through their village to the battlefield. He was gone for nine years.
"Feng Lichun, open the door!" A dignified male voice came from outside the door.
"Spring Begins, quick, open the door! Yuanbao's dad, his dad is back!"
Xu Keke opened her eyes, glanced at the original owner's mother-in-law Zhao Xiuying, and smiled.
She stepped aside and walked towards the old table inside the room. Da Cui, who was standing to the side with her younger brother Yuanbao, knew she was unwell and hurried over to pull out a stool from under the table for her.
Seeing the little girl's tense face, Xu Keke knew she was scared and a little nervous. She gave her a reassuring smile, but unexpectedly, the usually stubborn little girl's eyes instantly welled up with tears. She whispered, "Mom, I'll apologize to them."
Before Xu Keke could say anything, Zhao Xiuying opened the door, and Zhou Chengguang rushed in first. "Feng Lichun, what's wrong with you? How did you cause such a scene in the family dormitory building?"
"Old Zhou, let's talk this out. Don't yell at your sister-in-law. Let's find out what's going on first." Standing next to Zhou Chengguang, a man who was older than him, refined and wearing glasses and a military uniform, stopped Zhou Chengguang from exploding in anger.
Zhou Chengguang suppressed his anger, glared at Xu Keke, and said irritably, "Speak, what's going on this time?"
Xu Keke glanced at the crowd outside and said nonchalantly, "I'm sick today. The two kids went to the cafeteria to get food, and who knows what's wrong with these people? They came to the door and started making a ruckus. I was feeling really unwell and wanted to come in and rest for a while, but they started yelling even louder outside. You ask me? Who am I supposed to ask?"
Xu Keke's words were as good as saying nothing. Zhou Chengguang was stunned for a long time. "What you're saying is, if we do nothing, people will come to our door and cause trouble."
The conversation couldn't continue at all. The man standing next to Zhou Chengguang turned to the crowd and said, "Chen Yufen, you tell us what's going on."
The woman who had been leading the group earlier walked in gracefully. "These two children have been seen stealing from the family canteen more than once. Today, this one named Da Cui even stole 50,000 yuan from Company Commander Wu's wife. We came to find Feng Lichun, hoping she would discipline the children, but unexpectedly, she not only protected them but also pulled the children into the house. That's why I sent a soldier to call you."
Her poise and confidence contrasted sharply with Xu Keke's unreasonable behavior. The man nodded at her with satisfaction, looking at her approvingly. His tone was reproachful yet tinged with affection.
"Then you should also criticize and educate Comrade Feng Lichun privately. You need to be mindful of your methods when doing this work."
Although Xu Keke was feeling very uncomfortable, she couldn't help but burst out laughing. The two of them looked at her in confusion.
"It's alright, Political Commissar Liu, you can continue. I just think that the charade you two are putting on is quite amusing."
"Feng Lichun," seeing Liu Wenda and his wife's expressions change simultaneously, Zhou Chengguang took a quick half-step toward Xu Keke, "What nonsense are you spouting?"
Xu Keke retorted, "Nonsense? Which sentence are you referring to?"
What do you mean? This woman's really gotten bold. She's not going to talk to me properly today. Zhou Chengguang is a veteran; he's quick-witted. She's not alone in this house.
He immediately went to Da Cui. Pointing at Da Cui standing next to Xu Keke, he said fiercely, "You, at such a young age, you're already learning bad habits. You've even learned to steal. Hurry up and hand over the money. Who taught you these bad habits?"
Da Cui rolled her eyes at him defiantly, then glanced at Xu Keke, and reluctantly pulled out a folded square bill of 50,000 yuan from her pocket.
Just as Zhou Chengguang was about to reach out to take it, Xu Keke, who was nearby, raised her hand and took it from him.
"What do you mean? Give me the money back. Return the money to Company Commander Wu!"
Xu Keke wasn't afraid of Zhou Chengguang's glare. "This money isn't his, why should I give it to him?"
"What? It's not his?" Seeing Xu Keke's confident demeanor, Zhou Chengguang looked at Chen Yufen with suspicion.
“This money belongs to Company Commander Wu’s wife.” Chen Yufen nodded affirmatively to Zhou Chengguang.
"Otherwise, my Zhou Chengguang told me that you city people are all cunning and there are no good people among you!"
Zhou Chengguang now wished he could cover Xu Keke's mouth. He had said those words that day to make them, mother and children, obediently return to their hometown. How could she have said it so bluntly? Zhou Chengguang now felt even more that Li Yufen was right. With his current status and position, marrying such an uneducated country woman would only be a hindrance to him.
