Xu Keke didn't stand on ceremony with the three of them, rolled her eyes, and said sarcastically.
"Yesterday, in front of so many people, you made my mom pay the bill. Did you think that looked good? There weren't any of your relatives yesterday, but don't forget, you had colleagues and classmates too. My mom was trying to save face for your family, since it was your family getting married, not ours getting married. I didn't expect your family to be so unwilling to save face. My mom even said that she would give me my dowry money in a couple of days."
Upon hearing her words, a look of joy flashed in the eyes of Li Shaojie and his parents, as if they could already see the money going into their own pockets.
"Shaojie, why are we being so calculating with our family?" Li Guodong glared at his son, feigning anger, then tried to appease him, "Tingting, don't be angry. Shaojie is just straightforward; he says what he thinks."
Xu Keke waved her hand dismissively, "Alright, hurry up. This broom is so dirty. If you get an infection, disfigurement is a minor issue, but if you get tetanus, you could die. Give me the money quickly, we need to get to the hospital right away."
Seeing that the men still didn't move, Xu Keke laughed in exasperation, "Li Shaojie, they don't know, and you don't understand either. Look at this broom, and then look at your face. You think this wound doesn't need treatment, and you think you don't need a tetanus shot? Going to the hospital for treatment isn't unreimbursable, why are you trying to save money?"
The broom was brought from home by his parents; they wove it themselves from dry twigs, and it had many barbs. His mother had been rough, and he had cut his face in many places, drawing blood. His face was still burning with pain. Li Shaojie knew that Du Wenting was right; no matter what, getting an injection was definitely the safest option.
"Also, our wedding leave is only three days. Why don't you go to the hospital to get a sick leave certificate and stay home for a few more days? Are you planning to go to work with this injury on your face?"
These words struck a chord with Li Shaojie.
Seeing his son hesitate, Li Guodong understood everything. Thinking it over carefully, Du Wenting had no reason to lie to them. Her son was injured, and she was so anxious. Although it had been a commotion all morning, it was because her son had gone too far the night before, and his wife was taking it out on him. Now that they were married, she definitely wanted her son to have a better life together.
The daughter-in-law definitely wouldn't care about that money; I heard the government just gave her grandfather over ten thousand yuan in back pay. How could she possibly care about such a small amount?
Thinking of this, Li Guodong didn't need her to say anything more and shouted to Lu Cuihua, "Hurry up! Get the money for the child to go to the hospital!"
Lu Cuihua usually seems loud and boisterous, but when something really happens, it's Li Guodong who makes the decisions.
Upon hearing this, Lu Cuihua quickly got up and went inside.
Xu Keke didn't stand on ceremony and followed behind her.
Lu Cuihua pulled a large canvas bag from under the bed, opened it, and took out a black faux leather briefcase.
The briefcase was opened, revealing a variety of bills, ranging from fifty cents to ten dollars, all neatly arranged. Even the red envelopes used to hold the money were carefully placed together. At the very edge was a red book used by friends to keep track of the money they received as gifts.
Lu Cuihua didn't know how much it cost to see a doctor in the city, and was hesitating about how much to take out. Xu Keke snatched her black briefcase from behind.
Xu Keke's move was steady, accurate, and ruthless. Before Lu Cuihua could even react, the bag was already in her arms.
Xu Keke, clutching her briefcase, said as she walked out, "Don't dawdle, or it'll get worse. You won't even have time to cry then. People could die if you're too late."
Lu Cuihua was about to snatch it back, but after hearing what she said, her legs went weak with fear.
She hadn't expected it to be this serious. She'd hit Li Yumei at home before, and then left it alone; Li Yumei would just apply some medicine and it would be fine. How could it be so serious this time?
When they said they were going to the hospital, Lu Cuihua and Li Guodong insisted on going with them. The two were also hoping to get the black briefcase back.
Xu Keke certainly wouldn't stop her. Not only did she not stop her, she also said, "Since we're all going, let's not leave Li Yumei alone at home. It'll be good to have someone to look after her if something happens. Let's go together."
With those words from her, she walked ahead carrying her black briefcase, with the three people following behind. Li Yumei, like a timid young wife, walked at the very back.
When I got downstairs, I was surprised to find that many neighbors had gathered outside.
This is the dormitory building of Xu Keke's maternal grandfather's workplace. The neighbors on both sides are all her grandfather's former colleagues. Before the wedding, Xu Keke's mother even came over to give wedding candy to the old neighbors. She also told everyone that the young couple was young and asked them to take care of them on a daily basis.
This old building isn't very soundproof to begin with. Their family lives on the second floor, and today their argument was incredibly loud. You could vaguely hear it from downstairs.
If they keep making noise, they'll probably come up and bang on the door.
When they saw several people coming downstairs, they all gathered around and asked what had happened.
The original owner of this body was a proud person who kept everything bottled up inside. Xu Keke, however, didn't treat them as outsiders.
"It's nothing, it's all a misunderstanding. They say it's a custom in our hometown that on the first day of the wedding, the new bride has to get up at dawn to cook for the whole family. This morning, my sister-in-law, knowing I didn't know this custom, kindly woke me up. She even wanted to clean the house for both of us. I initially disagreed, and she stood in the room crying. Seeing that she meant well, I let her do it. But when I came out after washing up, it was her brother doing the cleaning! My mother-in-law was angry that she didn't care about her brother, that he was busy all day yesterday and still had to clean. In her anger, she grabbed a broom to scare her. And that's how she accidentally slapped her brother's face like this."
Although most of the people standing in this circle were elderly, they had a more imposing presence than the leaders who came to inspect their village. Li Guodong and Lu Cuihua unconsciously took a half step back, not daring to urge them forward.
