Chapter Fourteen: High School Female Teachers in the 1980s

When Xu Keke came downstairs in the morning, she saw Fang San wearing a black leather jacket, sitting with his legs spread apart on the seat of a 28-inch bicycle. He was tall and had long legs, and he stood with his legs supporting the bicycle effortlessly.

"Good morning, Third Brother," Xu Keke smoothed her slightly curly hair and greeted Fang San with a smile. She had gotten used to it these past few days; it seemed like she saw him every morning when she went out.

"Third Brother, why didn't you sleep well again last night?"

Fang San lifted his leg and jumped off the bicycle, looking at her in surprise, "Is it still very obvious today?"

Of course, with such dark skin that couldn't hide the dark circles under her eyes, how could they not be obvious? Xu Keke nodded at him with utmost sincerity.

She only discovered after getting to know Fang San a couple of days that this burly man, who always had a stern face, was actually quite talkative and interesting.

"So young, yet so troublesome! Can't sleep at night, goes for a run for no reason, just messing around at home." Grandpa Fang strolled out from the side, snorting at his grandson. He rubbed his two walnut-shaped hairs, smiled, greeted Xu Keke, and went upstairs.

Seeing Xu Keke still secretly laughing on the side, Fang San felt embarrassed and depressed.

That afternoon, Li Shaojie and Xiao Yujie borrowed a car from somewhere and drove off with their belongings. Professor Du and his wife originally wanted their daughter to go home with them. Xu Keke refused, explaining that moving things around would be too much trouble, and that this place was closer to her school, making commuting easier.

Fang San was helping her change the locks, and he was with her, assuring Professor Du and his wife that since they lived nearby, he would rush down if he heard any noise. He told them not to worry, everything would be alright.

So these past few nights, he didn't just not sleep well, he didn't sleep at all. At the slightest noise outside, he'd come out to check. He was constantly worried that Li Shaojie and the others would find out Xu Keke was home alone and come looking for trouble.

Seeing Xu Keke about to leave, Fang San hurriedly chased after her and asked, "Aren't you going to school today? Why are you only coming out at this hour?"

Xu Keke was taken aback. The way he said it made it seem like he had been waiting for her all along.

"I'm going to the medical school today." Turning to look at Fang San, who looked puzzled, Xu Keke added, "The school said that Li Shaojie's workplace must issue a divorce certificate first. They want me to bring it over before they can issue it to me."

“I asked the school for leave and went to find Li Shaojie to ask him to issue the certificate as soon as possible so that I could complete the divorce procedures.”

Upon hearing this, Fang San's eyes lit up. "I'll take you there. I need to take care of something there."

Seeing Xu Keke's disbelief, he said, "It's true, it really is. A friend of mine's dad works at a radio factory. He can get passes for tape recorders. He wants to open a shop with me. There's a storefront over there for rent. I'm just about to go check it out."

Xu Keke didn't disbelieve him, but he had helped her so much. She'd heard Lin Munan mention that Fang San was a demobilized soldier who learned to drive in the army. His grandfather said he'd worked at a factory for two days after his discharge and then quit.

He somehow managed to buy a minivan. He started earning money by driving around the streets. Xu Keke felt that she had used his car and taken up his time, so she wanted to pay him for the ride, but he refused to accept it no matter what.

He insisted that if he took the money, his grandfather would beat him to death. Although, given the Fang family patriarch's straightforward temperament, it wasn't impossible, Xu Keke felt it wasn't appropriate to constantly trouble him.

Seeing that she was still hesitating, Fang San quickly took two steps and blocked her way. Xu Keke was petite, and Fang San lowered his head slightly to discuss with her, "If you have time, you can also help me broaden my horizons. I'm afraid that if I go to talk to people alone, I might not be able to keep up with the conversation sometimes."

She could actually help with the conversation. Especially since she had Du Wenting's memories of the future, she might actually be able to help Fang San to some extent. Anyway, besides getting Li Shaojie to issue the certificate, she didn't have anything else to do, so Xu Keke agreed without hesitation.

Upon arriving at the medical school, Xu Keke looked up at the school gate with its blue bricks and white pillars, and couldn't help but sigh in her heart that it was indeed a prestigious school, truly magnificent.

Such a good school, someone like Li Shaojie, a scumbag, really doesn't deserve to work here.

With that in mind, Xu Keke strode into the school gate and headed straight for the conference room on the third floor of the south side of the school.

This was all thanks to Lin Munan inviting her home for dinner the night before last. Fang Minghui and Du Junsheng were chatting when Fang Minghui mentioned that there was a work-related ideological and united front meeting in the department early that morning. Du Junsheng couldn't attend because he had to participate in an exchange meeting with an overseas study group.

Xu Keke pretended not to know anything and pushed open the meeting room door. It was called a meeting room, but it was really just a classroom with a meeting room sign hanging outside; there were thirty or forty people sitting inside.

Xu Keke showed just the right amount of surprise on her face. "I'm sorry, I didn't realize I was in a meeting." She said that, but she didn't leave.

"Miss, what can I do for you?" Secretary Chen, who was sitting in the middle, asked with a kind smile when a young female colleague suddenly walked in.

"Excuse me, I'm Du Wenting. I'm here to see Li Shaojie so he can come with me to complete the divorce procedures."

Li Shaojie's wife, isn't that Professor Du's daughter? People started whispering among themselves during the meeting.

Li Shaojie was surprised that Xu Keke would come looking for him. He hurriedly stood up from his seat.

His mood had been on a rollercoaster these past few days. He was very nervous on his first day at work, thinking it would be like that day at the hospital, putting him in an embarrassing situation. Given Du Junsheng's prestige at the college, he even felt that someone might jump out and criticize him to his face.

Unexpectedly, all my colleagues were busy with their own work, and apart from the occasional strange look they gave me, everything else seemed the same as before.

Moreover, Du Junsheng had foreign affairs activities these past two days and was not at the academy. He didn't even have to face the embarrassment from Du Junsheng.

Just as he was about to relax, the department informed him that his spot for the exchange program with the foreign delegation had been cancelled.

Just when he thought his job was going to be affected, Director Zhou from the department talked to him.

They said the organization had heard that he had an improper relationship with a female doctor at the hospital. He was told to deeply reflect on his actions and be mindful of his lifestyle. They also repeatedly advised him to focus more on his work.

However, the underlying message was that she was advising him not to mention divorce. She repeatedly reminded him that bringing up divorce would be very detrimental to his future career development.

This left him completely bewildered. He went back and pondered it for half the night. He suspected that Du Junsheng had been busy with work and hadn't been at the college these past few days, and the college didn't yet know Du Junsheng's attitude.

But the department head's conversation made him realize something: as long as he didn't bring up divorce, in the eyes of outsiders he would still be Du Junsheng's son-in-law. Others would think there was still a possibility of reconciliation between the two. In fact, if Du Wenting took the initiative to bring up divorce, it would be even easier.

When Director Zhou spoke with him for the second time, he insisted that he did not want a divorce. He also subtly implied that Du Junsheng had used his position to force him to file for divorce.

Director Zhou was furious upon hearing this, slamming his fist on the table and accusing Du Junsheng of nonsense. He also assured him that the department would not ignore any problems that might arise.

He had barely relaxed for a day when Xu Keke arrived. Li Shaojie scratched his head in annoyance.
