Seeing that Feng Meijun had already made up her mind, Xu Keke was no longer in a hurry. Thinking that Xiao Yujie would be coming over soon and that her presence would only make things worse, Xu Keke discreetly left with Fang San ahead of time.
I don't know the specifics of what happened, but Fang San came over that evening and told her that Fan Tao had called and that the Xiao family had rented the courtyard for the time being. They would talk to them again when the other family decided not to rent it anymore.
Xu Keke thought to herself, "I didn't expect the Li family to be so wealthy."
At Fang San's urging, Xu Keke went home with him again and enjoyed a meal of braised ribbonfish and rice porridge. Before leaving, she also had a large bowl of jasmine tea from Grandpa Fang, and only after feeling satisfied did she return home.
To Xu Keke's surprise, Li Guodong and Lu Cuihua came to the school to find her the next day.
Other teachers encountered them at the school gate and, upon learning that the two were Du Wenting's father-in-law and mother-in-law, assumed it was something important and brought them to the office.
After a few days apart, both of them had clearly lost a lot of weight. Lu Cuihua's eyelids were swollen, indicating she had been crying a lot these past few days. Even Li Guodong's nasolabial folds had drooped further, almost reaching the corners of his mouth.
“Tingting, we had no other choice but to come to you.” Looking at the people in the office, Lu Cuihua wiped her eyes with her sleeve. “Shaojie gave you all the money, and we don’t have a single penny left. We don’t even have the money to go home.”
A train ticket costs three yuan, less than ten yuan for three people. Eighty yuan was given to Xiao Yujie's mother, but there was no money left to go back to their hometown.
Xu Keke wasn't in a hurry. She neither offered them a seat nor took them out. She just looked at the two of them with a smile and asked, "How much money do you want?"
Unexpectedly, Xu Keke was so direct. Lu Cuihua glanced at Li Guodong and said, "We've discussed it, and we're not greedy. If it's not ours, we don't want it. Shaojie gave you all his salary, and now our family doesn't even have money for food."
Xu Keke laughed and deliberately asked, "You're just going to give me Li Shaojie's salary, right? He gave me less than thirty yuan, and you want this much?"
Seeing that Xu Keke seemed about to pull out thirty yuan to get rid of them, Lu Cuihua panicked, "That won't do! Thirty yuan isn't enough!"
"Thirty yuan isn't enough. How much would be appropriate?" Xu Keke asked patiently and gently, giving Lu Cuihua the illusion that Du Wenting was the same as before.
Lu Cuihua mustered her courage and said what they had agreed on: "Just give me that gift money. I don't want anything else."
Xu Keke smiled, then frowned slightly. "Isn't two thousand yuan a bit too much?"
Lu Cuihua blurted out, "Not many!"
Remembering the old man's instructions, he said again,
"Don't worry, I'll go home as soon as I get the money. We know we're from the countryside and not well-liked. We'll go home as soon as we get our train tickets. We won't bother you again, and you don't need to get a divorce from Shaojie because of us."
Seemingly annoyed that Lu Cuihua had said too much, Li Guodong tugged at Lu Cuihua's sleeve and glared at her, "What nonsense are you talking about? What are you spouting in front of the children at work? How are they supposed to take care of the children in the future?"
It sounded like she was speaking in a low voice, but everyone who needed to hear it heard it. Although it was during class time, there were quite a few teachers in the office who weren't teaching.
This was another attempt to threaten her. Xu Keke couldn't let them deliberately smear her; she had been prepared, but she never expected it would actually come in handy.
Xu Keke glanced at her watch; she had class next period, and she didn't have much time left. She was too lazy to waste any more words with these two.
He picked up his bag from the table, pulled out the piece of paper Li Shaojie had written, and laid it out in front of Li Guodong. "This is what your son wrote on his first day of marriage. He admitted to having an affair with another woman and then asked me for a divorce. Even the leaders of his college have seen this paper."
Li Guodong felt a chill run down his spine. He had originally planned to go to the school to find Du Wenting and her supervisor, and tell them that Du Wenting was making a scene because she looked down on them for coming from the countryside, which was why she was threatening to divorce her son. Fortunately, they ran into the teacher at the school gate, who took them directly to the office.
He guessed that Xiao Yujie must have been involved in his son's divorce from Du Wenting, but he never expected that his son would leave something in Xu Keke's hands.
The teachers, who had been listening intently, suddenly looked up at Xu Keke after hearing her words.
They initially thought it was a family dispute over money, and their thoughts differed. Now, hearing that the elderly couple's son had a mistress shortly after getting married and was trying to extort money from the school, they realized it was clearly bullying.
The teachers in the office were all determined not to let Teacher Du suffer a loss.
Xu Keke looked at the Li couple and spoke softly.
"I don't really care whether you go back or not. I can give you the money. There's just one thing: Li Shaojie disgusts me. I want to divorce him as soon as possible. I don't care about this money; it's all from my family and friends. Just have Li Shaojie bring me the divorce certificate. I'll give you all this money, including his salary, without keeping a single penny for myself."
Although the trip to the medical school didn't achieve its purpose, it taught Xu Keke one thing: if Li Shaojie had any sense at all, he wouldn't dare to go to the medical school to say that he wanted a divorce.
Hearing Xu Keke speak so readily was a pleasant surprise for Li Guodong and Lu Cuihua. When Xu Keke took out that piece of paper, they both thought they wouldn't be able to get the money back.
