The guard's car drove very fast, and Xu Keke had a feeling that she had just expected it. She felt no smugness at having guessed correctly; instead, she felt somewhat guilty for possibly delaying this person's official business.
Because she had just tried to be clever, deliberately mentioning to the commander that she wanted to leave the army and go to the city immediately. She thought the commander would arrange a vehicle for her, but she didn't expect to have to use the commander's vehicle.
“...If they have any other arrangements, use this one.” She heard the guard whisper to the commander, and that was the half-sentence he replied.
Therefore, the location Xu Keke reported was the place where she could get to the tram the fastest.
The guard glanced at her in the rearview mirror. It was a deliberate glance, and Xu Keke could clearly sense that he was looking at her. But when she looked back, all she saw in the mirror was that military cap, deliberately pulled low.
Da Cui grabbed her hand and whispered in her ear, "Then, Mom, will we never see Grandma and Dad again?"
The girl's eyes were a little red; after all, she was only eleven years old, and it was inevitable that she couldn't let go. But as long as she could speak out, it was better than her previous life. In her previous life, Feng Lichun was ill and had to worry about making a living. He had no time to care what the little girl was thinking. The little girl kept everything bottled up inside, saying nothing.
Xu Keke pulled her into her arms and gently patted her back. "How could that be? If you miss them, you can go see them. Didn't I tell you, the relationship between you two will never change in this lifetime? It's not wrong for you to miss them or want to see them. It's all up to you."
Knowing that the guards in front would hear, Xu Keke tried to keep her voice down.
“I don’t want to think about him. He doesn’t want us anymore, why should we think about him?” Yuanbao shouted, not caring at all.
Xu Keke glanced ahead and saw that the other person seemed not to have heard her and showed no sign of distress. Then she whispered "Shh!" to Yuanbao, "Uncle, concentrate on driving, keep your voice down."
"What's between my dad and me is an adult matter. It has nothing to do with you. You can like him or not, you don't have to force yourself or change for anyone. Just do what you want, but remember, these thoughts and feelings are your own, don't force others to be the same as you."
After saying this, Xu Keke made a shushing gesture. She preferred to talk about it when the three of them were alone together.
Da Cui and Yuan Bao nodded obediently and said nothing more.
The car quickly arrived at the station Xu Keke had mentioned. Xu Keke thanked the driver and got off the car with her two children and their luggage.
The tram arrived quickly, and they didn't waste any time, arriving at Baijia Lane in no time.
Seeing them arrive, A-Qiu was delighted and wiped the flour from her hands on her blue apron. "The gentleman was right. You said you'd come today, so he told me to make extra noodles, saying that since you're here, we can't start cooking right away, so we can all eat together."
Mr. Cao also came out of his room. "A Qiu, give me the key, I'll take them there."
The key should be hanging on the doorframe of the room where A-Qiu just came out. She stood outside the door, pulled her hand back, and hooked a thick chain of red hemp rope on her little finger, with two keys attached to it.
"Oh dear, sir, you should go home now. It's warmer these days, and your cough has just cleared up. It's windy outside today..."
Before A Qiu could finish speaking, Mr. Cao coughed.
Seeing that A Qiu was rushing to take care of Mr. Cao, Xu Keke took the key from A Qiu's finger as she passed by. "You go ahead and do your work. I know which room it is. We'll go and put our things down first and then come over."
"Okay! Okay!" A Qiu wanted to help Mr. Cao, but then felt that her hands were not clean, so she could only clench her hands and persuade Mr. Cao, "Alright, you go in first, the mother and her children will be here in a while."
"Okay, I'll go in now. You go ahead and get busy too." Before going in, Mr. Cao didn't forget to remind Xu Keke, "Don't rush. Put your things away first, then come back."
Xu Keke smiled and agreed. After Mr. Cao went inside, she said something to A Qiu before taking the two children to the inner courtyard.
Unexpectedly, they saw Mr. Kobayashi coming out of the yard. Upon seeing them, Mr. Kobayashi nodded hurriedly to Xu Keke and smiled somewhat awkwardly, "You've moved in."
“Yes, we’re moving in today,” Xu Keke replied.
Having nothing more to say, Mr. Kobayashi nodded with a restrained smile and quickly walked past them.
Upon entering the second courtyard, Xu Keke glanced around. The main house opposite was quiet, with the curtains drawn, as if no one lived there. From the room of Miss Feng Si next door came the sound of a gramophone, a woman singing.
The sound wasn't loud, and the singing was faint and ethereal, with only the high-pitched parts clearly audible. It sounded like a selection from a foreign opera. Although it was muffled, Xu Keke felt from the pronunciation that it must be a Chinese person singing a foreign language song.
Only Miss Feng's room in this courtyard was occupied. Thinking back to the day she viewed the house, Xu Keke couldn't help but smile. The feelings of a young man are hard to forget, but he dared not express them.
In Feng Lichun's memories of his past life, there was a figure of Miss Feng, but no image of this Mr. Xiao Lin. It seems that in about ten days, Mr. Xiao Lin will leave this place. From then on, though separated by vast distances, they will be as close as neighbors.
Xu Keke took the two children to the room they rented. The door had a padlock, and Xu Keke instinctively turned it to the right twice, but it wouldn't open. She then realized that the lock opened to the left.
Upon entering the house, Xu Keke looked around. The house had clearly been cleaned again. The floor was exceptionally clean, and even the small items in the glass cabinet were gone.
