The next day, Xu Keke and Chen Jianguo did not go to get their marriage certificate because Bai Lu's uncle came.
That evening, a green Jeep drove directly into Chenjia Village.
It turned out that during the investigation last time, the military had been alerted. Bai Lu's uncle got the news. After inquiring further, although the other party was vague, he knew that trouble had been caused. So he asked for leave from his organization and rushed over.
Upon arriving at the commune and hearing that his nephew had nearly been burned to death again, he ignored the commune leaders' attempts to persuade him to stay and drove straight to Chenjia Village. The roads were dark and difficult to navigate at night, and it was already past eleven o'clock when he entered the village.
Fortunately, he only brought a driver with him. Chen Jianguo gave up his room and took Xiaodouzi, who was already asleep and couldn't be woken up, to his father's room.
Bai Lu's uncle exchanged a few polite words with the group before going to Bai Lu's room, where they chatted until late into the night. Chen Jianguo barely slept that night. At first, he wondered why they had talked for so long, but after the lights in both rooms went out, he couldn't sleep at all and started thinking about what they had been talking about.
Just as dawn broke, Bai Lu's uncle and driver got up. After washing up, the driver saw that the leader wanted to sweep the yard, so he quickly took the broom from him. Chen Weiguo tried to take it back, but he couldn't. He could only watch as the driver helped sweep the yard.
Seeing Cui Qin busy at the stove, Bai Lu's uncle felt a little embarrassed. "I'm sorry to trouble you. Don't work so hard. We can just eat whatever we have at home. We're not that delicate."
Cui Qin wouldn't listen to him. Yesterday, Wei Guo took the opportunity of delivering blankets to them to chat with the driver. Bai Lu's uncle was a high-ranking leader in the army; his official rank was something she couldn't even dream of.
This morning, she first asked Weiguo to go to Lanhua's mother and borrow a few eggs. She cooked cornmeal porridge and also made some egg pancakes. She also took some pickled vegetables from the pickle jar, chopped them finely, poured in some sesame oil, mixed them up, and put them on a plate.
Having arrived in such a rush last night, Bai Lu's uncle went over to the old village chief as soon as he got up. The two sat in the main room and started chatting. Being both soldiers, they had much to talk about. Having learned from his nephew last night how well this family had taken care of him, Bai Lu's uncle and the old village chief became increasingly friendly, their conversation flowing smoothly and becoming more and more congenial.
When Xu Keke got up, the whole family was already up. Chen Jianguo knocked on her door and brought her a basin of hot water.
"If you're sleepy, go back to sleep later. Get up and eat something first."
Uncle Bailu was somewhat disapproving, suggesting they eat later since they'd stayed up so late the night before. But the other person meant well, so he didn't say anything more.
"I'm not going to sleep anymore, Tiger and the others are here." Xu Keke was still yawning as she sat at the table. She took the porridge Chen Jianguo handed her, smiled apologetically at Cui Qin, and said, "I overslept, thank you for your hard work today."
"What are you saying? Whoever is available should do it. You helped out the other day too. We're all family..."
Chen Weiguo, the most astute of the three brothers, had already sensed something was amiss. He quickly tugged at Cui Qin's sleeve, smiled at his surprised uncle Bai Lu, and then glanced sideways at Cui Qin, saying, "Hurry up and eat, we still have work to do later."
Cui Qin immediately understood his meaning, and adopted the demeanor of a submissive wife, eating with her head down and saying nothing more.
Xu Keke took a sip of porridge, glanced at the sky, looked at Chen Jianguo, and asked again, "Where's Hu Zi? Didn't he say he'd leave early this morning?"
"I let Tiger and the others go first."
"Why?" Xu Keke asked, holding her bowl of porridge and looking at him with a puzzled expression.
"I was thinking that since your uncle was here, we should at least talk for a while. I was afraid of taking up their time, so I sent them ahead."
Listening to their conversation and noticing his nephew's unwell expression, especially the way the brigade leader, Chen Jianguo, had been waking his nephew earlier, Bai Lu's uncle became suspicious. "Where are you going?"
"My dad and Aunt Bai are going to get their marriage certificate. After they get it, I'll call Aunt Bai 'Mom'." Little Bean was happily munching on an egg pancake, but he didn't forget to look up and show it off to everyone.
Xu Keke then remembered that she hadn't told her uncle about the upcoming marriage.
It wasn't that she deliberately didn't tell. It's just that the marriage was only decided in the last few days. Last night, they talked about things from the last ten years or so. I feel like if she suddenly announced she was getting married, I probably wouldn't be able to sleep that night.
The old village chief put his chopsticks down on the table and said to Xu Keke, "I told Jianguo to wait a bit. Your uncle is here, so he has to sit down and talk to your family about this. Let's see if your family has any other requests."
Bai Lu's uncle had mixed feelings. He realized that if he had arrived just one more day later, his niece would have been married. He was also somewhat relieved, as his sister had passed away over ten years ago. This was their only descendant. Thankfully, he had made it in time; otherwise, his daughter would have no family to rely on for her wedding.
After dinner, while they were cleaning up, Bai Lu's uncle pulled Xu Keke back into the house. "What are you thinking? He's so much older than you, he's divorced, and he has a child."
They hadn't seen each other for over ten years, and being a man, he didn't know much about these family matters; he was just worried about upsetting his nephew.
“How could he be so old? He’s only eight years older than me. Besides, he’s not divorced. That child isn’t his.”
This is what Chen Jianguo told Xu Keke on the night He Jie visited her at the hospital.
"His classmate dated a female educated youth. Both of them had bad class backgrounds, and unexpectedly, they got pregnant. When this was exposed, his classmate couldn't bear it and committed suicide. The female educated youth was already in poor health, and she passed away not long after giving birth. His classmate's family had bad class backgrounds, and he couldn't even take care of himself, so he wanted to abandon the child. Chen Jianguo found out about this and brought the child back. Because of this, his girlfriend of several years broke up with him."
