Chapter Sixty-Five: Rural Female Cadres Who Came to the City in the 1950s (4)

If someone is willing to die, how could Xu Keke not be willing to bury them?

Company Commander Wu's plump wife stormed into the house, looking at Xu Keke with an arrogant air, as if Liu Wenda and Chen Yufen were no match for her.

The company commanders outside looked at Wu Jingming with some sympathy. Battalion Commander Zhou's wife had made her point so clearly, practically saying that their entire battalion didn't take Battalion Commander Zhou Chengguang seriously. They were still trying to figure out how to make amends when he went off to deliver materials again.

If we speak now, it's not just slapping Battalion Commander Zhou's wife in the face; it's openly putting Battalion Commander Zhou down.

"So, this money was dropped on the ground and picked up by Da Cui, right?"

Company Commander Wu's wife pulled on her not-so-long neck, looked up at Xu Keke, and asked, "Yes, what's wrong?"

"Then you falsely accused Da Cui of stealing your money. What is your purpose in doing this? Does Company Commander Wu have designs on the position of battalion commander?"

Wu Jingming rushed in, covered his wife's mouth, and apologized to Xu Keke with a smile, "Sister-in-law, sister-in-law, don't listen to her nonsense. With her small eyes, what can she see clearly?"

The plump woman looked at Wu Jingming in horror, shaking her head vigorously. She didn't understand what Wu Jingming was doing, or why he wasn't helping her. How could she ever face anyone in the family compound again after he treated her like this?

The woman was fat and quite strong. Wu Jingming was distracted while talking to Xu Keke and was pulled away by her. "Wu Jingming, are you crazy? You listened to her trying to sow discord. Even Battalion Commander Zhou is going to divorce her..."

Wu Jingming slapped him across the face. "Shut up! You think you know everything? Get out! If you don't want to stay here, go home."

Xu Keke watched the two of them with amusement, as if watching a play. Wu Jingming was right about one thing: it wasn't just his chubby wife who understood; everyone standing here, inside and out, was a fool. They all knew she was trying to sow discord. But what could they do? After all, they were the ones who had orchestrated it.

Even Zhou Chengguang didn't dare to openly mention divorce. If she did, she would be fine, but Wu Jingming would have a hard time.

"Alright, what kind of behavior is this? Wu Jingming, who told you to hit someone? Even if she's your wife, you can't hit her. What did we say at the last meeting? We need to change some of the bad habits from the old society. Hitting your wife is a bad habit."

Xu Keke found it amusing to watch Liu Wenda righteously and sternly reprimand Wu Jingming.

Liu Wenda, of course, also noticed the ambiguous smile on Xu Keke's face. She sat there, just as she had said at the beginning, watching him and Chen Yufen put on their act, like a spectator. And these people were merely actors entertaining her. This feeling made Liu Wenda very uncomfortable.

Liu Wenda discussed with Zhou Chengguang, "Now that things have been cleared up, and I see that your sister-in-law doesn't look well, she must be sick. Let her go and rest. And let our mother eat her meal quickly. What do you say, Lao Zhou?"

"Hmph!" Xu Keke didn't wait for Zhou Chengguang to say anything and said directly, "Don't be in such a hurry! Political Commissar Liu, I also want to ask, are the families of soldiers divided into different classes?"

Liu Wenda said with a stern face, "Comrade Feng Lichun, you should say less things that are detrimental to unity."

"Isn't it true that you should raise questions when there are problems, and that you should be brave enough to engage in criticism and self-criticism? Why don't I even have the right to raise questions? I just want to ask the political commissar a very simple question: as a family member of a military officer, are Lao Zhou's two children allowed to eat in the canteen?"

"Of course, no one has ever disagreed, now..."

Xu Keke was too lazy to listen to his nonsense. "Then have your orderly take the child and get some food for his grandma. I don't have any other requests, just that the child and his grandma have a hot meal. His grandma is so old, it's not good for her to eat naan every day. By the way, please don't say that it's past mealtime. I heard that the day before yesterday, your family member wasn't feeling well, and she asked the canteen to make her chicken noodles at 2 pm. I heard that they didn't have any chicken, so the canteen staff went outside and bought some."

That bowl of chicken noodles was shared not only by him but also by Zhou Chengguang. It wouldn't normally be a big deal, but now that Xu Keke brought it up in front of so many officials and their families, it became a big deal.

Liu Wenda, with a dark expression, beckoned the orderly over.

Xu Keke glanced at Zhou Chengguang and said to Da Cui, "Bring me the pen from your dad's body, I'll use it."

Da Cui walked up to Zhou Chengguang, and without even calling him "Dad," she reached out her hand to him.

Zhou Chengguang envied Liu Wenda, who had no lover in his hometown. His girlfriend had died in the line of duty. After the liberation of the whole country, he followed his heart and found Chen Yufen, a woman with whom he shared a deep affection. Her family was well-off, she was knowledgeable and cultured, and she was also eloquent.

So he didn't dislike Feng Lichun before, he just felt he had married a little too early. But after today, he was utterly disgusted by her. How could there be such a detestable woman? With her causing such a scene, how could he possibly get along with his colleagues in the army?

He really didn't want to be controlled by her. But in front of so many people, he had no choice but to compromise. Zhou Chengguang glanced at Xu Keke, reluctantly took a pen from his left pocket, and handed it to Da Cui.

Yuanbao was indeed clever. He saw Xu Keke pick up the pen and look around. He quickly ran over and pulled down the newspaper he was using to seal the cracks in the window. He spread it out and handed it to Xu Keke.

"Have this uncle take you to the infirmary and get me some medicine. If the doctor says they don't have any, remember to tell her I have a fever and just need some anti-inflammatory and fever-reducing medicine."

Xu Keke found a place with light-colored words in the newspaper. Leaning over the table, she wrote as she gave instructions to Da Cui. At that moment, you couldn't tell she was a rural woman who had just come to the city; her natural demeanor was no less than Chen Yufen's.
