Just as Li Shaojie and Xiao Yujie were racking their brains over paying the hospital fees, the three members of the Li family returned.
From afar, they saw a crowd gathered there. Intrigued by the prospect of seeing what was going on, the three of them didn't go to the ward first, but instead walked towards the crowd.
I never expected to see Li Shaojie here.
Hearing that a hospital room where they had only stayed for a short time cost so much money, the Li couple became anxious.
She forgot to ask where the Du family had gone, and Lu Cuihua pointed at Xiao Yujie and shouted, "Ask her! She's the one who let my son stay here. It's so expensive, my son originally said he didn't want to stay."
Li Shaojie's mother suddenly turned her back on her, and seeing the way everyone around her was looking at her, Xiao Yujie felt incredibly wronged. She tried to push through the crowd and run away, but Lu Cuihua grabbed her, saying, "You can't leave. If you leave, who will pay for this money?"
"Mom, don't treat Yujie like this. Yujie definitely doesn't know," Li Yumei advised Lu Cuihua from the side. She looked around and said, "Oh right, where's Du Wenting? Tell her to pay the money first. Isn't she holding the money for medical treatment?"
"The money in here, that's over two thousand yuan, where's the money?"
Li Guodong immediately spotted the black briefcase by the wall. He recognized it; it was the briefcase he'd used for years. He picked it up and examined it for a while. Then, holding it up to his son's face, he asked urgently, "What's wrong?"
"Where is Du Wenting? Where did she take the money?" Lu Cuihua ignored Xiao Yujie and anxiously asked Li Shaojie.
Li Shaojie opened his bag and roared angrily, "Alright, stop arguing!"
His shout silenced the three members of the Li family.
"Hey, hey," the plump woman inside the cashier tapped on the window with a ruler, "Keep your voice down, what are you shouting for? This is a hospital, go home and shout if you want to."
“We’ll talk about it when we get outside. How much money do you and Mom have on you? Let’s scrape together some first,” Li Shaojie said to his father with a dark face.
"I didn't bring any money!" Li Guodong glared at him, squatted down against the wall, and ignored him.
Li Shaojie then looked at Lu Cuihua, who took out two yuan and some small bills from her pocket and handed them to her.
Li Yumei shook her head proactively without him asking.
Li Shaojie walked up to Xiao Yujie and said, "Yujie, could you borrow one of your colleagues for a bit? We'll return it to them later."
Xiao Yujie didn't say anything, but in her heart she thought, how could anyone possibly lend her money again? Then she looked at the three members of the Li family.
After thinking for a moment, Xiao Yujie walked to the window and said, "Comrade, I am a doctor at the hospital. Can I borrow your phone?"
The cashier glanced at her, hesitated for a moment, and then slipped the phone through the gap. "Give me your number."
The call connected, and Xiao Yujie, holding the receiver, asked, "Hello, comrade, I'm Manager Xiao's sister. Is he here?"
Xiao Yujie's expression changed. "Okay, thank you, comrade."
After handing the phone back to the cashier, Xiao Yujie looked at Li Shaojie with difficulty, "My brother, he's not here."
Li Shaojie's face fell in disappointment. His mother was right; it was all Xiao Yujie's fault. If she hadn't insisted on him staying in this ward, not only would he not have had to pay so much money, but he wouldn't have ended up in this mess with the Du family.
Li Shaojie looked around anxiously, and after a long pause, he hesitated and said...
"How about... how about you ask Fang Minghui?"
Xiao Yujie never expected Li Shaojie to say such a thing. She tossed her head and said defiantly, "No!"
Li Guodong sensed something was amiss from his son's conversation with Xiao Yujie. He also learned that Xiao Yujie's brother was a manager. A thought struck him. He plopped down on the ground, pulled open the seam of his right trouser leg, flipped it over, and pulled out fifty yuan.
Among the onlookers, someone scoffed. "What a father! He'd rather watch his son suffer than hand over the money. What's he thinking?" The crowd began to chatter again.
Li Shaojie's face darkened further; all he wanted to do now was hand over the money and leave. He grabbed the money his father handed him and shoved it through the window.
While Li Shaojie was waiting for his change, Lu Cuihua pointed to the money he was holding in his other hand and said, "Son, give me my money first."
Li Shaojie was furious with his parents. He shoved the money in his hand into Lu Cuihua's hand, saying, "Here, here, take it."
As long as she got the money, Lu Cuihua wasn't angry. She held the money in her hand, carefully flattened it, and then put it all into her pants pocket.
There were more than ten yuan of his own money in there. Xiao Yujie opened her mouth, but in the end, she didn't say anything.
After paying the bill, the family and Xiao Yujie left the hospital. They found a quiet spot on the street, where Li Shaojie told them that Du Wenting wanted a divorce.
He didn't say that it was the Du family who saw him and Xiao Yujie hugging and that's when they brought up the divorce.
The claim is that Du Junsheng felt that they had wronged his daughter and that they couldn't agree on anything, which is why Du Junsheng forced her to agree to the divorce.
It wasn't a good thing to begin with, and Xiao Yujie figured Li Shaojie said that because he was afraid his family would blame her. So she didn't correct him.
This morning, Du Wenting's attitude was based on what her son told her.
Only Li Guodong didn't believe it at all. He took out a cigarette from his pocket, lit it with a match, squatted down against the wall, and took a few deep drags. This cigarette from yesterday was better than the ones he rolled himself.
After a long silence, Li Guodong finally asked, "So, where will we live from now on?"
Li Shaojie said he could stay in the dormitory, and told them to find a guesthouse for two days before going back.
Li Guodong was displeased. "You're the one who said you married the professor's daughter, and we thought we'd come to the city to enjoy a better life with you. We only came to the city after we sold our house to your Uncle Nan at the edge of the village and entrusted our land to your aunt. So tell me, where are we supposed to live when we go back?"
