Chapter Thirty: High School Female Teachers in the 1980s

Fearing it might be unsafe at night, Fang San first escorted Du Junsheng and Lin Munan.

Originally, the college had provided Du Junsheng with a car, but Du Junsheng didn't want to use it. After listening to Xu Keke's repeated instructions and analysis, Du Junsheng promised to talk to the college and arrange for them to pick him and Lin Munan up and drop off for the next few days. They would decide what to do after they caught the bad guys.

After dropping Du Junsheng and Lin Munan off at the hospital dormitory, only Xu Keke and Fang San remained in the car. Neither of them spoke at first, and the atmosphere in the car was somewhat awkward.

Xu Keke thought for a long time but couldn't bring herself to ask, but finally couldn't hold back and blurted out, "Did you just happen to run into me, or... or... just happen to run into me?"

Xu Keke deflated. She couldn't very well ask the person if they were following her on purpose. What if they said no? Xu Keke felt she'd never felt so awkward before. She was angry with herself and didn't want to hear any answer, so she simply turned her head to look out the window.

“I… I actually come to pick you up every day.”

Xu Keke immediately turned her face away, "How come I've never seen you before?"

Fang San drove, looking at the road ahead. "Ever since Xiao Da came to see you, I was afraid something might happen, so I picked you up from get off work every day. There were a lot of people leaving school during the day, so you didn't notice. In the first few days, you went into the compound, and I followed you in. Later, you came to live in the hospital dormitory, and I watched you go in before going home. Today you didn't come out, so I went into the school and saw you working overtime in the office, so I waited outside."

No wonder I never saw him when I got off work those days; he was right behind me. How am I supposed to see him?

"You're talking nonsense,"

Upon hearing Xu Keke's words, Fang San immediately looked at her, about to argue. Xu Keke slapped his arm with her uninjured left hand and snapped at him, "Watch where you're going!"

Fang San quickly and obediently turned his face away.

“I saw you and Tao Min together at the gate of the compound that day. Where did you pick me up?”

The car had just pulled up in front of the police station. Fang San parked the car and was about to explain when Xu Keke opened the car door and got out.

It was the same police station where the two had reported the incident last time. Deputy Chief Li Ningshan happened to be there too, and upon hearing what his colleague said, he hurriedly came out of his office.

"How come you're injured after just a few days? What happened?" Li Ningshan asked with a smile, seeing Xu Keke's arm in a cast.

Fang San beat Xu Keke to it and recounted the whole story to Li Ningshan.

“This is intentional assault. Come here,” Li Ningshan’s expression turned serious after hearing Fang San’s account. He ushered the two men into his office and then called in two of his colleagues.

Fang San described the characteristics of the car that was going to hit Xu Keke, and also mentioned the license plate number he had noted down.

After Li Ningshan finished writing everything down, he put down his pen and said to Xu Keke, "With these clues, things will be much easier. We'll also go to the scene to investigate and see if we can find any other eyewitnesses."

Xu Keke quickly said, "Oh right, my bicycle is still there."

Li Ningshan smiled, "Then we'll head over there in a bit, and we can also give you a ride home on the way. As for your safety, I'll apply to my superiors to have someone protect you to and from get off work for the next few days."

"No need, I'll take her home first. She has to go to work tomorrow, so she needs to rest early. I'll pick up the bicycle when she gets home. I'll also pick her up and drop her off for the next few days, so you don't need to send anyone."

Fang San spoke up before Xu Keke could again. Li Ningshan looked at Xu Keke, "Can I ask what your relationship is? Are you in a romantic relationship?"

It's no wonder he was puzzled. Based on his years of investigative experience, the two of them at the gate of the compound that day didn't seem to have any special relationship.

He should have stopped her first and made things clear. Fang San looked at Xu Keke nervously.

"It's not confirmed yet; we need to discuss it further before we can determine whether it's yes or no."

Li Ningshan was amused by Xu Keke's words, "If it's not decided, remember to let me know."

The other two officers were also surprised that their Chief Li would be so bold today, and they exchanged glances and made subtle moves.

Li Ningshan stood up, straightened his police cap, and said, "Alright, you two don't need to go to the scene. We'll go take a look. If the bicycle is still there, we'll bring it back to the station. Come pick it up at the station tomorrow."

After the group left the police station, just as Xu Keke got into the car and Fang San started the engine, Li Ningshan, who was standing under the car pushing his bicycle, suddenly spoke up, "Du Wenting, we were elementary school classmates."

Before Xu Keke could react, Fang San stepped on the gas and drove off.

“That day, Tao Min came to our house. My grandfather introduced her to the electrician from his old workplace. I took her to the gate of the courtyard that day because I was going to pick you up.”

"Why did you introduce a potential partner to Tao Min?" Xu Keke asked Fang San, puzzled.

Fang San looked somewhat annoyed. "After she asked you that day, she kept pestering me. I asked my grandfather what to do, and my grandfather... came up with this idea."

Thinking of Old Master Fang's usual attitude towards Fang San, Xu Keke couldn't help but smile.

"Did it work?"

"Huh? Oh, it's done, they're a couple."

As Fang San drove, he glanced at Xu Keke, then quickly turned back to look ahead. He thought to himself, "I've explained everything clearly. Didn't she say she wanted to talk? Why isn't she?"

Xu Keke, seemingly oblivious to Fang San's anxiety, cheerfully rolled down the car window a crack. The night breeze blew in through the gap.

The night wind was still a bit chilly. Fang San wanted to remind Xu Keke not to catch a cold, but before he could speak, Xu Keke said...
