Chapter Thirty-One: Female Educated Youths Sent Down to the Countryside in the 1970s

Xu Keke opened her eyes again and found herself lying on the bed. She turned her head and saw a bamboo basket covered with a red cloth hanging on the roof beam. Although there was no wind in the room, the basket was swaying gently.

Xu Keke felt a little dizzy, so she quickly closed her eyes and slowly turned her head, moving the throbbing back of her head off the pillow. After lying there for a while, the dizzying sensation subsided.

Just as Xu Keke finished processing the memories flooding her mind, the cotton curtain was lifted from the outside, bringing in a gust of wind.

Hearing a noise beside her, Xu Keke opened her eyes and saw a large, round face right in front of her. The girl reached out and touched her forehead. "Bai Lu, are you feeling better? Does your head still hurt?"

Before Xu Keke could answer, she first noticed the girl's brand-new floral cotton-padded jacket in her sleeve.

Seemingly sensing Xu Keke's gaze, the girl awkwardly withdrew her hand. She twisted her body and sat to one side, straightened her clothes, and casually tugged at her sleeve. She used the slightly worn blue cotton jacket over her to cover the exposed part of her cotton-padded coat.

"Hey, Chen Hong, I told you I'd take care of Bai Lu, but you insisted on taking my job. You said you two are good friends, so you should come. What, you think taking a look and asking a question is enough? And you have the nerve to ask the team leader for five work points? You really have no shame."

Xu Keke then noticed that there was another girl following behind Chen Hong. This girl had long, slender eyebrows and eyes, a slim figure, and was pretty, but not as pleasing to the eye as Chen Hong.

Chen Hong seemed somewhat afraid of this girl. Looking at Xu Keke lying there, and seeing that she had no intention of helping her, Chen Hong clutched the hem of her clothes and stammered, "Wu Wanyi, you, you shouldn't talk nonsense. The brigade leader told me to come back and take care of Bailu. As for the work points, I, I was just asking. It's okay if they don't give them."

Wu Wanyi sat crookedly on the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed), took out a handful of melon seeds from her pocket, and said, "You should have said that to the team leader earlier. It's too late to tell me now. Come on, I don't want to work today either. I just want to see how you take care of Bailu and how you earn these five work points. Anyway, if you don't take good care of her, I'll go to the brigade and see who dares to give you these five work points."

Wu Wanyi casually tossed the sunflower seed shells she had cracked onto the kang (a heated brick bed) beside her. She swung her legs back and forth, just staring at Chen Hong.

Chen Hong was caught in a dilemma, her face flushed from the pressure. She asked Xu Keke with a pitiful expression, "Bai Lu, do you...do you want some water?"

"Wanyi, that's enough!" At this moment, another girl walked in from outside, wearing a gray jacket over a plain gray turtleneck sweater.

She carried the teacup to the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed) and said to Chen Hong, "Here you go, quickly give her some water."

"Gao Jie, thank you."

The girl named Gao Jie glanced at her and said, "What are you thanking me for? I took care of Bai Lu. You don't need to thank me."

Chen Hong looked back at her gratefully, took the teacup with both hands, and placed it directly in front of Xu Keke. "Bai Lu, have some water."

Chen Hong really wasn't good at taking care of people. The original owner was weak and dizzy, so how could she get up? But this body desperately needed something to replenish itself. Xu Keke clenched her fists and pressed them against the kang (a heated brick bed) beneath her, gritting her teeth and forcing herself to sit up.

Xu Keke breathed a sigh of relief and reached out to take the teacup from Chen Hong's hand. It was incredibly hot! Luckily, Xu Keke reacted quickly, bending her knees and using the raised blanket to catch the teacup. If the original owner of this body had just suffered a head injury and had been bedridden for a day and a night without food or water, this cup of water would definitely have spilled on the bed. Aside from the burn, the worst part was that in this cold weather, she wouldn't even have a blanket to cover herself with at night.

Xu Keke looked up and caught sight of Chen Hong and Gao Jie. After exchanging glances, she looked away and looked elsewhere.

Xu Keke was puzzled. In her previous life, it was this afternoon when the village's women's director came to see her and found that she had no one to take care of her. So she discussed it with the brigade leader and found a weak woman from the village to take care of her for two days.

I just arrived and haven't done anything yet, so how come I'm already different from my previous life?

Lost in thought, Xu Ke used the blanket on her lap as a cushion, held the teacup in both hands, and leaned in to take small sips. The benefit of hot water was that from the moment it entered her mouth, her body began to revive as the hot water slowly flowed into her mouth.

Wu Wanyi was still cracking sunflower seeds while making sarcastic remarks about Chen Hong. Because Gao Jie was there, Chen Hong seemed emboldened. She completely ignored Wu Wanyi's words and took a pair of trousers from the cabinet on the kang (heated brick bed).

The trousers were turned up, revealing a square patch of floral fabric sewn onto the knee. A tear lay beneath the fabric. Chen Hong casually picked up a scrap of cloth from another bundle. She dragged a stool from under the table against the wall and, by the light from the window, sat down to mend the trousers.

Xu Keke was positioned in the center of the kang (a heated brick bed). She placed her empty water cup aside. Feeling a bit stronger, she wrapped herself in the quilt and dragged herself to the kang cabinet. Taking out the bundle that belonged to Bailu, she turned to look at the three people watching her. "Chen Hong, you're wearing my new cotton-padded jacket."

This is not a question, it is an affirmative statement.

In her previous life, Bai Lu only discovered a few days later that Chen Hong was wearing her new cotton-padded coat. The original owner of this body had only worn that coat for two days during the New Year. Although she was unhappy, she endured it because they were good friends.

Xu Keke is a terrible person, not to mention that Chen Hong and Bai Lu might not even be good friends. Even if they were, taking something without asking, especially something the other person likes best, would be considered stealing by Xu Keke.

Chen Hong, who was sewing pants, stopped abruptly. Like a schoolchild who had made a mistake, she stood up in a panic. She didn't look at Xu Keke, but stared at the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed). "Yesterday, yesterday when Chen Xichun and I carried you down from the mountain, I, I tore my cotton-padded coat."
