Chapter Thirty-Three: Female Educated Youth Sent Down to the Countryside in the 1970s (3)

Chen Jianguo got a headache whenever he saw these educated youth. They were all lazy and gluttonous, and quite shrewd in their own schemes. They just wanted to avoid working, use their mouths to spout nonsense, and get Chen Jianguo to calculate their work points.

The village produces a limited amount of grain each year, which is not enough for even the villagers themselves, and they still have to support a few of them.

After hearing what his father said, Chen Jianguo stood up to leave. "We're busy in the fields. These are all matters for the educated youth themselves. Let them handle it as they see fit. They can go to the commune or the town, it's up to them. They can complain wherever they want."

The old village chief raised his hand and smacked Chen Jianguo with his cane. "What are you talking about? The country entrusted these people to us because they believe we can manage them well. Is this how you do your job? I told you last time that we couldn't send them away, but you didn't listen. Now that something's happened, you don't want to take care of it. If you don't want to do things right, then go home. You can forget about being the brigade leader."

The more he talked, the angrier he became, and the old village chief hit Chen Jianguo a few more times.

"I was appointed as the brigade leader by the commune, not by you," Chen Jianguo muttered, but dared not move.

When the old village chief arrived, he ordered someone to summon Chen Xichun and the other three educated youths to the brigade headquarters. Knowing there was going to be some excitement, the villagers dropped what they were doing and rushed outside the brigade headquarters, completely surrounding it.

The first group of educated youth who arrived all found various excuses to return to the city. Only Gao Jie's older brother, Gao Zhe, remained. He led the others, parting the villagers who were surrounding them, and entered the brigade office.

Hearing that the question was about Bai Lu being beaten on the mountain yesterday, Gao Zhe, unconvinced, tilted his head back and asked Chen Jianguo.

"What right do you have to interrogate us? Who gave you that right? Aren't we educated youth people human beings in your eyes? Do you think we're someone you can manipulate at will?"

Apart from Xu Keke, the other five people also craned their necks and looked up at Chen Jianguo.

Chen Jianguo glanced at his father and said he didn't want to get involved in these educated youth's petty squabbles. Looking at how they were challenging him, as if he were their class enemy, he was even more annoyed. He then looked at Xu Keke standing next to his father and became even more annoyed. She wasn't very bright at work, but she knew to use her father to pressure him.

Xu Keke wasn't in a hurry; in Bai Lu's memory, that was exactly how it was. When rumors were rampant, Gao Zhe, the leader of the educated youth, not only didn't stand up for her, but instead got into a fight with the brigade leader. In the end, he used this incident to cause the brigade to stop interfering in the affairs of the educated youth.

"Then let's go to the town's police station."

When Xu Keke said this, the surrounding villagers were stunned. Had this girl lost her mind? The police weren't easy to find. Besides, it was such a small matter; even the police couldn't handle it.

“I agree with what she said. Since you all feel that the village can’t handle it, then let’s have someone hitch up a truck and take everyone to the town so that the officers from the town’s police station can handle it.” The old village chief puffed on his pipe, glanced at everyone, and made the decision.

Chen Jianguo's eyes lit up when he heard his father's words, and he shouted outside, "Okay, Tiger, you go hitch up the car."

"Captain Chen, don't rush," Gao Jie stepped out from behind Gao Zhe and said softly.

“It’s spring planting season now, and everyone’s busy. Going to town and back will take up half a day. After explaining things to the police, we’ll probably have to stay in town for a few days. We can’t just go as the educated youth; the brigade has to send someone with us too. If you ask me, it’s not good to delay anyone’s work over such a small matter. It was just a small misunderstanding, and we can just explain it in the village. What do you think?”

Despite Gao Zhe being a troublemaker who even the commune wrecked, his sister was quite different from him.

Let alone the girls in the village, even including all the educated youth, Gao Jie was the most beautiful woman in the surrounding area. Not only was she beautiful, but she also wore clean and fashionable clothes, and spoke in a refined and cultured manner.

Once she spoke, everyone nodded in agreement.

The old village chief didn't care who said it; he only asked Xu Keke for her opinion. Xu Keke naturally agreed, saying that going to town was just to scare these people. She still didn't know who had given Bai Lu that blow, or why. If someone else struck her on the road, given her current physique, she'd be dead on the spot.

"Then what do you want to ask?" Chen Jianguo asked Xu Keke irritably.

Xu Keke glanced at him, not getting angry with him, and calmly said, "Yesterday on the mountain, after I finished tilling the plot of land that was assigned to me, I went to drink water under a tree next to me. Then someone hit me with a stick, and after that I don't know what happened."

Xu Keke looked at the other five educated youths and said, "I just want to know who hit me."

The educated youth all stared at Xu Keke, none of them saying a word. The villagers gathered outside whispered amongst themselves, and the one called Hu Zi, who was leading the group, shouted, "Didn't they say you were the one who arranged to do *that* with Chen Xichun on the mountain?"

As soon as Hu Zi finished speaking, the villagers around him burst into laughter. Some chimed in, "That's right, Xi Chun, tell us, what were you two doing on the mountain?"

Another person said, "I saw it when Xichun carried the person down the mountain; the buttons on her clothes weren't even fastened yet. Haha..."

Hearing the villagers' offensive words, Gao Jie turned to look at his brother, a cold smile creeping onto his lips before he quickly suppressed it.

Xu Keke remained calm and composed, seemingly oblivious to everyone's words. However, her eyes were fixed on Chen Xichun, who had entered the house with the educated youth but was now standing at the door. "Did you hear what they said?"

When Chen Xichun first entered the house, he was a little nervous. But as he listened to the villagers' jeers and touched the money in his pocket, a smug look appeared on his face.
