With Secretary Chen's assistance, Xu Keke quickly completed the divorce proceedings with Li Shaojie. Before the court's verdict on Li Shaojie was announced, she expected that Li's family members would not come to see her. Instead, it was Xiao Yujie's mother, Feng Meijun, and her brother, Xiao Da, who stopped her outside the store.
Feng Meijun's attitude surprised Xu Keke. She looked at her with disdain and ordered imperiously, "Yujie is not in good condition right now. Have someone release her ahead of schedule."
Xu Keke almost thought she had misheard, and pointed at herself to confirm again, "Me? You mean you want me to release Xiao Yujie?"
"What are you pretending for? You just found someone to help you, otherwise how could the case be filed so quickly? Since you've already found someone, just release Yujie first."
Xu Keke was speechless. What did that disdainful tone mean? If she really could influence the public security, procuratorate and judiciary, she could arrest them and lock them up for a few years just because of their attitude.
Seeing that Xu Keke was about to leave, Xiao Da reached out and grabbed her arm. This person had a similar problem to Xiao Yujie; it seemed that they both liked to use their hands.
Xu Keke grabbed his wrist and twisted it to the right. Xiao Da released his grip, his face contorted in pain. "Stop it, you woman..."
He hurled a string of vulgar curses. Xu Keke shoved Feng Meijun aside, who was blocking her way, and then shoved Xiao Da forward with her knee, sending him crashing to his knees.
Xu Keke has no memory of herself; these are all subconscious self-protective reactions produced by her body.
Xiao Da became obedient and stopped saying anything she didn't like. Feng Meijun also stopped being arrogant and pleaded with her, "We won't beg you anymore, just let my son go. We'll leave right now."
Xu Keke found it laughable; this was the attitude she had when asking for help, which showed just how arrogant and domineering she usually was.
Xu Keke looked at Feng Meijun with a puzzled expression and asked, "I heard that Xiao Yujie has some mental problems. As long as you apply for bail, she should be able to be released on bail. Why don't you go through the proper channels?"
Feng Meijun glanced at her and said dejectedly, "If that's the case, it will confirm that Yujie really is sick. How will she work and get married in the future? Her life will be ruined."
Xu Keke is truly speechless at this family's antics; they're even thinking quite far ahead.
“Yu Jie has told us everything. We know you were behind all this. We won’t ask you for any compensation. Just have someone release Yu Jie early. She’s been driven insane by that family. She’s a victim too.”
Seeing Feng Meijun's self-righteous attitude, Xu Keke didn't want to waste any more words with this family. Even if Xiao Yujie wasn't crazy, this family's logic was definitely not normal. Xu Keke let go of Xiao Da and released him.
"You should leave quickly. I don't know anyone. I just called the police. As for why the case was filed so quickly, I guess it has something to do with the current crackdown."
Xu Keke turned to leave when she saw Fang San standing at the entrance of the store, his hands in his pockets, looking at her inquisitively.
"You wait, I won't let you get away with this."
Behind him came Xiao Da's restrained voice, and Feng Meijun's urging, "Alright, let's go. Don't talk to her anymore."
Xu Keke didn't turn around, but only looked at Fang San, biting her lower lip and thinking to herself how she could act in a way that was neither too deliberate nor too impulsive, while still being able to reasonably explain her behavior.
Xu Keke had just taken a step toward Fang San when Tao Min rushed out of the store. "Third Brother, the White Rabbit milk candy you bought is so sweet, you should try some too."
Tao Min stood on the steps and stuffed the peeled candy in her hand directly into Fang San's mouth.
Xu Keke smiled in their direction; it was indeed quite sweet. She turned and walked towards Fang San's car parked by the roadside. The ginkgo trees along the road were lush with leaves, and sunlight filtered through the dense foliage, dappling the ground like a painting.
Xu Keke sighed. The weather was getting warmer, and the semester was almost over. It seemed she'd be busy with the final push before then.
On the way back that day, Xu Ke probably sensed that the atmosphere between the two of them was different from before. She tried to chat with Fang San like before, but Fang San became the same as when Xu Ke first met him, becoming taciturn.
In the days that followed, Xu Keke became really busy. She attended classes at school during the day, and in the evenings, through Lin Munan's friend at the Foreign Languages Press, she took on a translation job for a foreign novel.
Xu Keke soon realized she was overthinking things. From that day on, even though she went to get off work and came out to take out the trash at night, she never saw Fang San again.
Xu Keke felt somewhat annoyed at her own unrequited love.
One afternoon, Xu Keke had no classes. She asked the school for leave and delivered the manuscript she had translated several chapters to the Foreign Languages Press. On her way home, just as she reached the gate of the compound, she heard someone call her from behind, "Comrade Du Wenting!"
Xu Keke turned around and saw Li Ningshan, the deputy director of the police station from that day. He was pushing his bicycle toward her.
"Director Li, hello. What brings you here? Is there some kind of mission?"
"Yes, I came here to investigate something, and I'm about to leave. You look like me."
Xu Keke remembered something, hesitated for a moment, but still asked, "I don't know if I should ask, and if you feel it's inappropriate, you don't have to answer me. Has Xiao Yujie been taken back by her family?"
Li Ningshan, holding the handle with one hand and adjusting his hat brim with the other, said, "You can ask about this. As a party involved, you can inquire about the progress of the case.
