Xiao Yujie returned to the courtyard. Li Yumei had just come out of Li Shaojie's room, carrying what appeared to be Li Shaojie's clothes. She let out a silvery laugh and called out to the room, "You're so annoying."
Turning around and seeing Xiao Yujie standing in the courtyard, his expression instantly changed. He snorted at her, tossed his braid, grabbed his clothes, and went to the sink.
Xiao Yujie entered Li Shaojie's room with a sullen face. Li Shaojie was lying on the bed shirtless. When he saw her come in, he lazily picked up a book from the bedside and opened it to cover his face.
She had just had a fight with her mother and had originally wanted to confide in Li Shaojie about her grievances. But after hearing Xu Keke's words and seeing Li Shaojie like this, she sat down on the edge of the bed in a huff and started crying.
Hearing her cry, Li Shaojie initially didn't want to pay attention. But getting annoyed, he sat up and asked what was wrong. Xiao Yujie hugged him and cried even harder. When he learned that she had fallen out with her mother and wanted to stay there, Li Shaojie quickly pushed her aside, put on his clothes, and jumped out of bed.
"I'll go ask my dad if you can stay here."
Xiao Yujie sat on the edge of the bed, stunned. This courtyard belonged to their family. Li Shaojie's father said he had used all the money to pay the rent for her mother and had asked her for a considerable amount of money. Why did she need Li Shaojie's father's permission to live here?
Fortunately, when Li Guodong heard that Xiao Yujie was going to stay at their house, he kept saying yes. Xiao Yujie didn't know that Li Guodong agreed to let her stay because he thought that since her parents couldn't persuade their child otherwise, he was waiting for Xiao Yujie's mother to come and beg his son to marry Xiao Yujie, and then see how he would ask their family for money.
At lunchtime, because Xiao Yujie was there, Li Guodong had Lu Cuihua buy some pig hearts—which didn't require meat ration coupons—and stir-fried them with some green peppers. Having not had meat for several days, Li Yumei and Li Shaojie ate heartily. Xiao Yujie, however, didn't like these kinds of dishes, and her mind wasn't on them. Her eyes kept darting back and forth between the faces of the others.
Li Shaojie's eyes resemble his father's, with thick eyebrows and large eyes. His lips, however, are like his mother's, being thin.
Li Yumei has round, almond-shaped eyes. While she doesn't resemble Li Shaojie at all, both of them have very beautiful eyes. However, they do resemble each other in some ways; Li Yumei's lips are plump and unlike anyone else in their family.
It's hard to say what their noses are like; one has a straight bridge, while the other has a small and delicate nose.
"Xiao Yujie, why are you staring at me like that? You don't have any bad intentions, do you?" Li Yumei put her chopsticks in the bowl and looked at her sideways.
Xiao Yujie's heart skipped a beat. "Yumei, I'm attracted to you because you're pretty. My brother is twenty-eight this year. He used to be the manager of that store outside. Now the store has closed down, and he's gone to work for the Commerce Bureau."
Li Shaojie felt increasingly uneasy as he listened, and was about to speak up to stop her when Xiao Yujie said...
"He still doesn't have a girlfriend. My mom is really worried about him. You want to find a good job, but because of me and your brother, neither of them is willing to help. If I introduce you to my brother, and you become my sister-in-law, my brother will find you a good job without my mom's help. Forget about selling things, you're smart enough to work in an office."
"How could your brother possibly be interested in Yumei? Besides, Yumei is way too different from your brother. Let's eat." Li Shaojie glared at her irritably.
Seeing that the whole family's expressions had changed, Xiao Yujie had already believed Xu Keke's words.
Just now, she saw Li Yumei instinctively look at Li Shaojie. Her eyes clearly showed she was afraid of upsetting him. Xiao Yujie knew she was absolutely certain she hadn't misjudged him.
Xiao Yujie didn't say anything more. After finishing her meal, she took advantage of the Li family's inattention to go to the Fan family's house and call her brother.
Xiao Da was at a supply and marketing station in another city. He received a call from his sister, but didn't think much of it. If you like him, he's just someone who makes you happy. If you don't like him, just find someone else; there's no need to care who he likes.
Xiao Yujie was not about to give up. She talked to her brother for a long time, and Xiao Da asked which village the Li family was from. Finally, he promised Xiao Yujie not to worry, and that he would definitely go and see them when he finished his business and returned home.
